The coin game is so strange. The world is dark and dimly lit, and the lack of humans in such a large world makes you feel so alone. But somehow it manages to feel so comfy and relaxing? Also this video was great, I'd be cool with more videos like this, but anything in the arcade series is entertaining

It's like a reverse uncanny valley. Creepy, but not enough to be actively threatening, and too blatantly "off" to be that unsettling can't put your finger on it vibe. Things are weird, but you *can* nail down exactly why, and nothing really seems to pose a threat so you end up with this cozy surreal in between.

@@Vonias Stranger in a land that stands both in diametric opposition to your needs as a human, but is somehow entirely accommodating at the same time. It's a similar feeling to using the bathroom at a doctor's office...it stands both extant to you with the foreboding nature of medical fears while also being a comfort. The whole game also has sort of a survival-horror vibe with the setting that also provides a sense of unsettling nostalgia. I always feel like a child playing the game even though I'm 34...everything feels bigger than I am again...adventure awaits in a sea of liminal and unsettling spaces. The Coin Game is one of the very few truly unique experiences one can have in modern gaming.

@@doubtful_seer yeah that a bigger issue for sure. The class divide is growing, and with that, businesses that were in small towns either have to close, or move to an urbanized area. And when enough businesses move, the people will move with it. The idea of an "American" small town is getting its life slowly squeezed from it, it's just not sustainable. Cities are growing and wealth is moving. Is there a balance between keeping small towns/rural communities alive, while also sustaining a big city? Japan, the netherlands, and Germany have been able to do it.

@@dogshake all I know is that I’m already being priced out of being able to afford to live in the small city I was born in. Lol, I thought it took place in Michigan because of the Michigan DNR poster and the sand dunes and the look of the little strip mall/party store area that you pass on your way to the arcade. Not sure if anyone else commented this, so apologies if I'm being redundant. But I used to run an arcade back in the 90s. A HUGE one. Anyhow, I can tell you that Putt-Putt is indeed a trademarked name, belonging to a major company that, you guessed it, fabricates and installs novelty miniature golf courses. We found this out the hard way when the owner received a rather menacing notice to remove the term from our course. The irony is that we were already in the process of arranging for it to be dismantled to make way for the (ultimately far more lucrative) go kart track we put in.

I work at an arcade. Cyclone can be set with the payout timer but it can also be set to be played on "skill", you can actually win if you time it right. The only thing that changes is that when it gets close to the jackpot, it's speeds up briefly. Making it pretty difficult to hit but totally possible if you get your timing right. The jackpot gets smaller and smaller the more times you got it. It goes up the more times you miss it.

I really wish people would put as much enthusiasm in their sponsor ads as Ian does. Its a type of silly shenanigans that blends perfect with the episode it makes it worth watching it all.

So you guys know those 'liminal spaces' series of pictures of real life locations that are otherwise normal but without people in them look desolate and ominous? Well both this video and game gives me the complete oposite feeling. Unsure if its just Ian's usual brand of editing and chill energy or something else but the look and feel of the Coin Game just makes me all warm and fuzzy, feeling nostalgic for something I never really experienced.

When you talked about hotel lobbies it made me wonder if there's like a ... stay at hotels simulator out there. Like, someone just digitally recreates some cheap, moderate, and fancy hotels and you walk in with your luggage, haul it to your room, lay on the bed, walk around the block, etc. I know it's weird but when I think of a vacation I don't think of going to big attractions and stuff, I think of just going to a hotel and hanging out. I could literally go downtown, pay for a hotel room for like $40 a night, and feel like I'm on vacation.

When I was a kid used to play a game called Nerf Arena Blast, a shooter game with nerf guns. At some point I discovered websites with fan created levels and mods, and I would spend a lot of time just exploring the environments that people made. Most of them wouldn't have worked well as a playable level, It just seemed like a platform to make something interesting to wander around in. These virtual tours give me a similar feeling, with better graphics and fewer viruses.

I'd like to see you play the color-rama wheel either in this game or in real life stream. I'd think that would be fun people betting fake tickets, calling out random colors, the fun chaos of being in a real arcade with all of your buddies. Seems like it would be right up your ally heh. Also hope M.J gets better best kitty ever needs some love and healing.
