Jeffrey Herlings and Jase Macalpine review the first 3 rounds of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
//
Jeffrey Herlings is often referred to as the fastest man alive. He is a 5x MXGP World Champion and rarely does interviews. I was fortunate enough to film a young Herlings at the McGrath ranch way back in 2013 but we haven't had any contact since then. From just that one shoot though I always knew Jeffery would make a hell of a podcast if we were ever able to make it happen and today is the day.
Jeff is not afraid to speak his mind and is honest not just about his strengths but also his weaknesses. We talk about sand, his relationship with Eli Tomac, his future plans and much more.
We are just about to hit 100k on our KZbin channel, so if you haven't already subscribe, it would be rad it you were able to head over and hook us up.

JH has said this before. Many ex pros have said that when Eli is 100% confident, there is no one who has ever ridden a dirt bike faster. I was at Hangtown in 2015, and it was just nuts how much faster he was than anyone else. They way he rode the track was simply different from everyone else. Even riders who are still competing acknowledge that when Eli is on it, they are racing for 2nd. But when Eli is not feeling it, he backs off and really slows down, especially after his 2015 crash. Since 2015, Eli has never really crashed hard.
@ItsTheRufus
@ItsTheRufus 2 жыл бұрын
@@shooter7a yeah Eli would have went 24-0 that year for sure. I don’t think him crashing had anything to do with him going that fast though, even if he was going half that speed he would have ate shit, pretty sure Stewart crashed in that same section a year or 2 before that. It was a freak thing, just like Roczen in 2017, Roczen would have won that SX season hands down.
@shooter7a
@shooter7a 2 жыл бұрын
@@ItsTheRufus I don't think he would have gone 24-0. He was going TOO fast, and I do think that is why he crashed. Instead of pacing himself, Eli was riding as hard as he could. He was in the groove and just hammering. When you do that, things go great...then suddenly you are on the ground. Note that after that season, after Eli went through that, he became of up and down in his riding. After that bad crash, he was more in tune with his confidence of lack of it on certain days, and that is why we started seeing those off rides from Eli.
@ItsTheRufus
@ItsTheRufus 2 жыл бұрын
@@shooter7a agree to disagree there, he was on a completely different level than anyone else that year. Even if he would have turned it down a little bit, no one would have touched him. But I do agree in that he never pushes the limit when he’s not comfortable anymore because of that crash. As much as us riders hate to admit it, you never truly get over those big injuries. When I broke my femur it was hard coming back and trying to go that fast again.

That was a VERY impressive interview. For a top rider to give his competition ( not mxgp but he has raced many times against all the riders he mentioned except Sexton and Lawerance bros. ) that much accolades and positive things to say especially towards Tomac who he said when he is on is faster than him. most racers dont say to much encouraging due to the severe mental games they play and giving your arch rivals confidence is usually not done. shows his professionalism and in his own riding abilities and confidence in himself. I also didnt realize how knowledgeable he is with the AMA and knew the details of each race. saw him race at Redbud MXDN and few years back. the only one faster that day was Glen Coldenhoff. Both on KTM 450 and absolutely shredding the sand. They were doing Larroccos leap with ease.

And Jason Anderson won the 2nd moto of The Motocross of Nations in Maggiora, Italy. What a ride. He was amazing. Even beat Herlings, who if I’m remembering correctly, had just started riding 450’s. Herlings’ podium interviews come across totally different than this - he’s very confident in himself. I’ve admired what he says on the podium, too. He doesn’t hold back. You don’t win as much as Herlings by holding back.

What's funny is how so many people other than the riders make the argument that Herlings or Tomac is faster than the other. Both have repeatedly said that if the other guy is feeling it, that guy would win. What's so hard to understand that you have two unbelievably fast racers, riding as close to as fast as the bikes can go, would be a situation that none of us can predict, and the only real way to know is to have the guys race against each other? Personally, I never really had favorites or a biased opinion. Racers are who they are, and all I care about is great entertainment and also seeing how amazingly fast the top riders can ride. Had the opportunity to race once against (I use that term loosely, because there wasn't any real race between me and that rider) Ty Davis, and that guy was 2 gears taller everywhere. He absolutely smoked me, and I couldn't imagine riding a bike that fast.

It probably to late for him to learn supercross. Never gonna forget 2017 at Ironman Herlings came with only his suspension and had one day to get used to the bike that the engine and frame is different from his usual. He dominated moto1 moto2 he fell after the first turn got back up in dead last and went all the way to first passing Tomac who had the red plate he looked over at him and pulled a tear off. He went 1-1 the American SX/MX reporters thought he was gonna finish 4th.

Kenny at the age of 14 would scrub 90 degrees sideways on a 250cc while winning mx2 races at masters against world championship racers aged like 20-25 while dude was so small he needed a stand besides his bike to be able to start cause he couldn't reach the bottom. Dude beat the 2nd overall finisher in the MXGP MX1 Class in Nagl in a race at germany fair and square aged f'n 14 maybe 15 but I think actually 14. This kid was the real f'n deal. I know exactly what herlings means. It is no wonder that Herlings talks that way about him cause they both are simular age and raced against each other at young ages. And even tho herlings was 10 tiers above the rest Roczen at least back then was still a tier above him. Ever seen a 14 year old win the SX2 class 250cc? Yeah roczen did that in dortmund. That's the biggest supercross in germany. Again while not beeing able to touch the ground with his feet. Just to make that clear, teams back in the days sometimes managed to get ama riders over there. So as a comparison Chad Reed once finished 2nd overall in german supercross, granted I think it was SX1 so 450cc. It was in 2001 but reed was already 19 years of age at that point. Again, roczen won the SX2 class on a 250cc at the age of 14. Also in 2001 Chad Reed raced some Inter DM races in germany still at the age of 19. While I don't have results that is inter DM. I think now we only got the DM nowadays (Deutsche-Meisterschaft) wich is below the adac masters series. I don't have reeds results and only the entry programm of team Kosak from back then wich james stewart also raced for before but again Reed was 19 at that point. Kenny won the 450cc class of the masters with 15 even tho in reality he raced half the races aged 14. If roczen would have never crashed he would have ended his career as the goat and it would not have even been close. Fact is he was so talented that he moved up to 250cc class at like the age of 13-14. You will never see how insane that looks in the US cause it is very unusual. He did it anyway. He was born in 1994 and won the ADAC MX Masters (that's the biggest series in germany but generally in europe behind world championship) in 2009. So at the age of 14-15. The Masters is the highest class. It is 250cc and 450cc machines. World championship top 10 riders regularly participated there in between. You got to see that sh tho to believe it. The US after he sadly crashed never got to see what this kid really was. Now they say he is scared to race somebody hard when bavk when he was 14 or 15 and didn't manage to touch the ground with his feet a 26 year old max nagl was pissed because kenny bumped into him on purpose on the last lap for the win in a preseason event. This kid was anything but definetly not scared what so ever of racong hard. You know how funny it sounds if the announcer says and there is this guy aged 25, this guy aged 22 and there is max nagl the world championships second place finisher last season aged 26 and at the far right is our small kenny aged 14 he is the only guy who stands a chance against max so watch out for him this race!! And he goes and him and nagl lap like everyone in the race but kenny still manages to win the overall against him with nagl going 1/2 and kenny going 2/1?. Dude nagl like I said was very talented, he raced the MXGP class for factory KTM back then but at the age of 26 he STILL LOST AGAINST A GUY NOT EVEN IN PUBERTY!. Americans don't know that, Herlings does tho cause he was there...in the 85cc class.

His Opening comment, “Tracks are really safe” this is a problem for Supercross as it’s catering for mediocre riders. Not saying the riders are not good, but the tracks don’t test the riders. If they were old school tracks, the top 10 riders would mostly be in different order of 1 to 10. Example, Tomac is so good on fast hard tracks just as Herlings is. The tracks also minimise the ability to pass, so if you get a good start, you pretty much guaranteed stop 5

he wasnt always like that bit definitely had matured and become humble in his adulthood. was a super fast punk back in the day and it pissed people off cause he was so much faster than they were.....essentially in the sand. remember seeing an article in I think MX action, JH wasnt a pro , still on a 85 and it said was the fastest ir soon to be sand rider in the world. they were right. Bumps me out at Redbud MXDN a couple years ago when they put crazy truckloads of sand and transformed the track into a completely different one than our national held there. it suited the Eyros. especially Herlings and Coldenhoff. why they did it I am not sure. I thought you were supposed to keep each track its unique one if a kind layout. that's why they change tracks and countries every year. but not to turn them into sand tracks. race Southwick if that's the goal in US. Any one who says it's easy never raced there and is fooling themselves but not the locals who know better. it used to be worse. it lost a lot of top soil/ deep sand.

By 2005 everyone was riding 4 strokes aside from Stewart who made a poor which choice by not riding a 4 stroke that season as I’m absolutely certain he would have dominated.
