Using the word manners is so we can control a horse that just really should live free, but people condition a horse to do what we want them to do and if it dont its called bad manners, people should have respect for beautiful animals, humans actually take all there happiness and freedom away, just so they can have there own pleasure SAD

she is healthy, happy, and now she's "feeling her oats" as the saying goes. Getting rid of some pent up energy is a good thing for a young animal, as long as they don't hurt themselves or others. I think she could jump that fence, but she doesn't know she can, yet!

Watching this again after 4 years what a difference in Bella’s behavior! I noticed this time how close she stand to you and REN’s like you were her security blanket! I think she was also showing off for you and letting steam off! She might not have been happy being separated by the boys either! She never tried to hurt you but I’m glad she learned her manners near humans! You’re such a good teacher Tara and your kindness rubs off on your horses! Well that certainly was a surprise to see Bella in such a different light, she came prancing out onto the metal like a racehorse being led to the track 😉 and actually looked stunning. Even though we all have our own opinions regarding the fact that she played up, I think Tara is handling her very well and was brave enough to post this particular video knowing there would be criticism. I’m sure with her experience she will get on top of any problems with Bella. The very fact that Bella has been a very well behaved horse makes this whoopsie seem larger than it is I feel, when really, it’s fairly characteristic of a young horse. Things will settle given time. Keep up the good work Tara. X

I agree completely. Bella is a youngster with abundant pent up energy that’s bound to happen when wet weather prohibits being turned out for exercise. Tara knows what she’s doing, with a balance of firmness and leniency due to those factors. Bella will, of course, test the boundaries. And she will learn. But with a mix of firmness, understanding, and love. Not with harsh punishments. Tara has already proven herself as an excellent equestrian and trainer, and she owes no one explanations. I, for one, am grateful for her continued willingness to share her life experiences with us despite what I’m certain is anticipated criticism.

Wow, that was different! Tara, good for you for telling her off! She’s trying to push the boundaries and needs to have a time-out. She must learn to run off her energy safely, within the boundaries that YOU determine. Cold weather can put spark in a horse, while hot summer weather can do the opposite. @@tanya6088 Letting a horse have it’s way can lead to it becoming dangerous. Just like raising children, horses need to know the boundaries and who is in charge. Tara has had many years of experience. You do your horses the way you want; let Tara care for her horses the way she wants.

Thank you for sharing this! A less experienced person could have easily been hurt. She’s a young thing with a lot of energy and doesn’t really know how big and strong she is. A combination of youth, pent up energy, those sheep, and not knowing how to deal with all that at once. She really is a sweet horse. In between her bouts of a temper tantrum, she would come back to you! “I’m still a good girl...right, Mom?” “You still love me...right, Mom?” Much better manners after burning all that extra energy off! 💕🐴🐎 Where’s my head?! I think she was just playing. At one point she looked like she wanted you to come in and play with her. Glad you didn't! She has no idea of the harm she could do. Wild horses play together like that. She's very young and needs time and patience. A good sign is she let you put her halter on without a fuss and walked calmly with you.

Tee hee...oh, Bella. You sure do keep everyone on their toes. 1st: in the same way us worry warts asked you to start carrying a phone on your solo rides, we are now going to ask you to wear your riding hat when Bella is on her toes. Nuff said. Did you notice that Bella only ran around the top half of the menage in the beginning, gradually moving to the bottom half towards the end as she calmed and gained confidence? She clearly, despite her high anxiety, sees the three of you as her security. Your command to "Get on!" (or whatever you said) when she approached you at the fence was the equivalent, imho, of Apollo turning his hind end towards Bella or Farouk when he has had enough of their high jinks. I noticed that you said hello (holding your hand out for her to touch with her nose) only after she had calmed. I am amazed at your instincts. It is not easy to physically do this...a lot easier to watch and analyze. Great camera work Rens! Beautiful lights Steve! TFS, as always. Love to all at your home and on the channel. Penny

Tara, you had so much patience with Bella at that time. I see she’s come a long way from the beginning. I think she was just a very scared horse and she looked for comfort from the other horses. I loved the way she listened for the sound of your voice to give her comfort as well. Those houses with the Christmas decorations were so beautiful. Excellent Video.

Bella’s age is showing in this video. She’s young, feeling good and it’s cold weather. She shows a rambunctious side that could be potentially dangerous if the owner was not as careful as you were. Leaving her alone to run, have a bit of a tantrum and not have her every whim appeased was the best thing to do. Excellent. She was much calmer on the way back to her stall, more ready to listen. I had a ten year old mare that would get just like this if stalled too long without exercise. It was like leading a stick of dynamite until I could get her halter off out in the paddock. She was sweet - afterwards!

Wow! That was different! Seems she is trying to push the boundaries. It’s a good time to be Mum Boss and put little Missy in her place. She does need to get rid of that energy but she must learn to do so in a safe way. Yes, cold weather brings out the ‘piss and vinegar’ in lots of horses. My ‘summer’ horse was a Morgan cross (hot weather took the spike out of her), but on the colder months, I was glad to ride any horse that was not normally forward going. A pleasant change!

As large as she is, she is the effective equivalent of a 6 y/o (maybe younger). You don't expect impulse control from a 6 y/o, and you shouldn't expect it from a yearling. Tara handled her perfectly. She'll learn what she can and can't do as she matures.
