So sorry you got yelled at 😟 farmers do have trouble with having their crops trampled, but that’s no reason for him to have such a hissy fit! Maybe he’ll wise up and place a proper sign that leads to the correct direction. I have found that since the pandemic, people are more angry than usual. Anybody else observed this side affect?

Yes, the pandemic has affected society in numerous ways, especially seen in a rise in mental health issues. Crime rates are soaring in the US….. random acts of violence, riots, assault and battery, murder, domestic abuse, hate crimes, etc.

Well done for keeping off the crops and flashing their photos all over the internet is not nice, very rude. How would you feel if you had people just wander through your property? He probably thought there would be more horses coming through too and not all are as careful as you with keeping off the crops, horses can carry dirt and mud that may have diseases off other properties too so please make sure you get whoever is in charge of marking trails to get proper signals up.

This was really interesting though I am sorry you had to endure his wrath. I live in the US (Arizona) and have moved to a barn which is in the suburbs. We ride through neighborhoods to get to a trail which leads through an expensive group of homes in order to arrive at the wash (dry riverbed/county park). Generally the residents are polite as we ride through but some get annoyed with us. When I watch videos from England I am amazed at the access you have through the fields. We would give anything to have those lovely grassy areas for a good canter.

Yes, I’ve seen plenty of signs like that, where clearly they’re used to getting people going the wrong way, so put up a sign to direct you the right way. His attitude suggested he was a bit fed up perhaps of riders going the wrong way, but as you say a sign would have solved the problem or even a sign positioned that you more clearly see directing you left when you came up the path. I’m not sure what the local bridleways group is like local to Tara, but I’d definitely be contacting them to ask for better signage to be erected 😊

If you had a herd of cows that broke out and caused huge stress and worry because of a similar so called little mistake you may understand a little better why a farmer gets angry with strangers riding around their fields when they don’t have rights of way on them…..

Tara so sorry that the farmer upset you so. I thought you handled it very well. And good boy Farouk for standing still so your mum could get back on!! Wonder why the bridleway wasn't marked better?

Whatever damage did that chap think you might have caused? Great that they helped you out in the end, but why be nasty at the start? In the crappy times we are in, just a little bit of kindness goes such a long way. GO TARA !

Well God bless you both. My Arab could always sense my slightest emotion which made mounting from the ground that much harder. He KNEW I needed to get on from the high ground, and made me work for it. That ride you were on seems desolate, and I wouldn't have wanted to go back nor would I. Stay safe and well you two.

You handled that well. You apologised but stuck up for yourself too. They have clearly come across a few rude horse riders in their time and are treating everyone they meet with the same disdain. I hope they realise after meeting you that all horse riders are ‘ not the same’ a lot of us have good manners and it was such a genuine accident on your part. I think they realised in the end as the helped you find your way. Sorry you were so upset. You didn’t deserve to be treat like that. ☹️

It is the Council's responsibility to signpost bridleways. Problem is at this time of year that paths get overgrown if not used much.

At least she made an effort to soften the encounter: "Come another time." You were respectful, as is your nature. You went as best as you could, by the official ordnance map. Unfortunately, you encountered a farmer who wants to circumvent his responsibilities regarding access. A small sign, in a counter-intuitive location, seems intentionally obstructive. Hope you don't encounter another stinker for a long time.

How upsetting! I guess they weren't worried about upsetting you or the horse! Well thankful they behaved a bit better when they were face to face with you. No cause for the upset really, and yelling. I cannot imagine an adult male telling me I was lying! You did well to stand your ground and pull out your map! Thank God you trained Farouk to stand, I'm sure he was upset with the tensions. Good that this type is far and few between, your country has a wonderful tradition (unlike the USA) of having open ways for horse and riders. Well, good on you figuring out how to get back up in the saddle! Thank you Tara for sharing this with us! What an adventure!

Tara, don't let it get you down. Most of us have experienced undeserved anger from someone. It's just part of the life experience. Makes you wonder what his poor wife goes through. Some people react that way and then later regret their actions. Keep your shining smile, keep calm, and ride on! (Very anxious to find out how you got on that tall horse.)

Well that got my Irish up! Tara you put that grouchy man in his place without him even knowing it. He probably would have enjoyed a fight but you acted rationally and calmly which is very difficult to do when your seated on a horse and a stranger loses his mind about where you have ridden. It’s a wonder Farouk stayed so calm with the atmosphere of anger and tenseness that old grouch was displaying. Because of that alone it was a very smart move to dismount Farouk and keep control of him. One of the Fruits of Spirit is self control, something more people should strive for, as you and his wife displayed. 🤎🐴🥰
