I am guessing this KZbin channel, with the "new" shop, the projects being done by pals, the visits with other shops... the play all day vibe... This is the most fun Tony has had in his whole career.

Digging it uncle T. I have a 383 truck engine I picked up complete for $150 years ago out of a Fleetside truck. I took it apart several years ago and found it had overheated. It's been sitting in an engine cradle since coming back good on not being cracked. The 383 is a good engine to build; cheaper and more plentiful in my neck of the woods than a 440. Good luck on the build.

an easy tilt-forward apparatus is from any pre-General Motors SAAB in a junkyard, or those FWD Buick park avenues from the 1980's. Lift up, pull forward, and tilt forward. use seat belt retractors if you want to keep it from going too far. Meanwhile, to offer an armchair, monday morning quarterback post to the comment section...i think by the time all that work goes into the door conversion, its worth making it an altered-wheelbase throwback car--from the sound of the door closing, that unibody may want a full cage to keep the 383 from popping any welds :)

I'm glad to see you building an old 383. Back in the mid to late 70's I had a 70 Challenger 383. I had to rebuild it in about 78. I had the crank turned 10 and clearance. Oil ports enlarged. My heads had been milled 35 a year earlier. I used the old /new at the time Crane Purple shaft, 510 lift and 308 duration with anti-float lifters . Zoom Clutch and pressure plate. New 600 Holley carb. I don't remember the brand of headers, But they had 2 1/8" header tubes going into 4 1/2" collector tubes (man it was loud). Nobody in my area had a dino at that time so I don't know what the HP was. All I know is it would pull the wheels when I hit 2nd gear. When I would race some of the four wheel drives(race trucks) red light to red light. After I beat 2 or 3 of them , nobody wanted to race. It was my everyday driver and it got around 19-20 mpg on leaded 89 gas. Man I wish I had it back!!!!!!!

I've installed the bigger exhaust valve in 516 heads before. They do work excellent with stock pistons. Some have enough meat in the seat area for hard seat installation and some don't. Kind of a crap shoot. I love the tunnel ram idea. Might have to drag out my old MP unit and give it a go for shits and giggles.

I don't have my GTO any longer, but still pick up Pontiac drivetrain parts when they're too cheap to pass up. The Ls craze is a big factor in this, but so long as someone has the storage space, its worth buying up the stuff not made anymore--i just picked up an edelbrock version of the carter carb for $45 since i might do a mope one day and already have an edelbrock LA intake lying around someplace. I can say, the engines built from "garage art" lying around won't be dyno kings, but they'll get a car down the road...too bad i live in the rust belt, tho. the only solid (ie, no hole you can put your fist thru) mopar metal around that's affordable is truck stuff--and i'm not a dakota fan.

I do hope that you continue to make some more content on the 383. You did once say that it's your favorite Mopar engine and It's mine as well. I have a /6 in my '70 Belvedere wagon and a 383 in my '65 Sport Fury (Hell yeah Austin, Great car!). I've gotten a LOT of good info on your love and content for the Slants and have made some upgrades on mine from your advice. The 383 is "under reconstruction" and I need some advice on the heads. The block is stock 330hp '65 with the 516 heads. Cam is Edlebrock's #7194 (238 int./246 exh. @ .050" - 0.480 int./0.495 exh lift), Intake is Edlebrock DP4B and carb is Holley 3310. Unfortunately, I still have the stock log exhaust manifolds to choke the flow but hope to find some Magnum manifolds or shorty headers in the near future. As it is it wraps up fast and runs like a banshee with the 516 heads! I recently acquired a good pair of 452 heads. *My Question is: Would I be better off using the 452's (larger 1.74" exh valves & hardened seats) or staying with the closed chamber (higher compression but smaller 1.60" exh valves) 915's? I'm on a severe budget and can't afford the machine work of installing the 1.74 valves in the 516's. I could use some input from the fellow 383 Mopar crew out there on the pros & cons between the two heads.

.010” over pistons and rings were readily available back in the 70’s. It was important to have them for engines like the 340, which is a for inch bore casting punched out to .040 at the factory. A lot of guys wouldn’t go past .020” overbore in order to maintain decent cylinder wall thickness, and they would probably have the block sonic checked to make sure there was no adverse cors shift. In a 383, it’s not as important, but a lot of racers wanted thicker cylinder walls in a motor that was capable of high rpm. I would have pistons made for use with 440 Rb rods or even longer Hemi rods. The He I rods would give you about 2-1 rod length to stroke ratio!

It will run good, BTW you can fit 2:14 and 1:81 in those heads, leave the cone on the exhaust to stop reversion, it will still flow well, and right at immediate EVO. .... You should go super old school and knurl the piston skirts, makes up the clearances and holds oil where you need it ... plus the know it all's will lose their mind in the comments sections lol :)

I think UT needs to call out the guys at roadkill and challenge them to a drag race on a budget say 5 grand that has to include the car ,they always knocks his old school go fast secrets it would be great to see them get wooped in a race...but you have to watch them because they say they only paid 500 for a car and you damn well know it was 2500 or more...oh and no big tech companies can help with free stuff..
