Gina, apricot preserves or cherry preserves are fantastic on pork. You can make a glaze sauce and brush it on toward the end of cooking, then have some at the table for additional dipping sauce. If you require a recipe there are plenty on line.

Happy Anniversary to you two love birds-not sure what your day is, but ours will be 55 years on the 19th June. We had a small holding and raised Polled Herefords, Sheep, 54 laying hens and planted a raspberry field and had a home made green house. However we are just watching your videos now and getting so much joy from seeing how you have grown your homestead. So three so deserve all the success you have achieved, due to your excellent work ethic. You are a pleasure to watch and make our day. Blessings over you and all the stock, which we know also now by name!

I was gonna say the same thing but you beat me to it. Lol. Here’s another tip for measuring shortening. Put water in a measuring cup & start adding the shortening, making sure it stays below the top of the water. Say you have your water up the the 2 Cup line & you need 1/2 C of shortening. Add shortening until the water level gets to 2 1/2 C. Pour off the water and, voila, there’s your 1/2 C of shortening. It’s just water displacement. Sure beats trying to dig it out of a measuring cup.

I was going to say the same thing! Or if you're measuring both oil and honey, just use your spoon or cup to measure your oil first and then your honey and your honey will slide right out of the measuring spoon/cup.

Al! You give the pigs apples and grains together, you'll give them auto-intoxication! That combination creates fermentation of alcohol in the gut. Too much gas means they won't eat as much until all that clears out. BTW; you can make a heck of a lot of apple cider vinegar with just the good parts of those rotted apples.

We cut our cabbage and my wife made pickled cabbage. It's like krout. She the tool our purple cabbage and made something to put on hot dogs. She canned both in a water bath. I am pulling my radishes tonight. Our beans are up and beautiful if we can keep the deer out of them, we might actually get to eat some of them. Tomatoes should be coming in soon. We were about a month late getting the garden out down here in Southeast Tennessee. The weather would not cooperate. Our last frost is suppose to be April 15th but it was like May 15th. One of my concerns with this style coop is what will prevent a raccoon from crawling under, grabbing a chicken leg and chewing it off? I know Justin uses the electric netting, but I also know that they have frequently forgotten to turn it on. Also, do you plan on only using it during your warmer months? Justin has a much warmer climate then you do. An open air coop is great for a warmer climate, but I wonder if it would offer enough protection in a colder climate like yours.
@ginawhisnant9966
@ginawhisnant9966 4 жыл бұрын
Al has an electric fence around his chickens too. The chick-shaw can be pulled into the greenhouse in really bad weather if need be. They can always bank hay up the sides and cover the floor for extra insulation.
@natehb
@natehb 4 жыл бұрын
The great thing about the electric fence, is once the predator gets educated that it is electric. The predator will not try again. Greg Judy says don't shoot predators, cause then you have to train a new one. Justin says his coop is good to -20. Below that you need wind blocks, but still allow for circulation, to prevent frost bite.

Not only that (what the other 2 repliers have said), but I don't believe he (Al) plans to use it all year anyway.... just to be able to move them out on pasture more easily. Once Nov. Love the collars. I went with neon colors on mine. Happy Anniversary! I'm not a fan of all wire bottoms. You're going to end up with a lot of amputee chickens and they don't do well. Also, that chickshaw is very heavy and on uneven ground it will take quite a bit of strength to maneuver that around. I also see our local 600 pound black bear ripping it to shreds and tossing it all over the pasture. That pork roast looked delicious! Blessings to all.

Looking forward to seeing Rusty and his gang out on pasture full time. Going to have to try the marinade and the dressing. That marinade would be good on chicken too.

Hi Al, I was watching YT channel “sew the land “ he had a new contraption that moved his chicken tractor like butter. It looked easy to install and even his wife could move the chick tractor. Hope it helps.

I watch a lot of homesteaders not one mentions Mother Hubert squash, the best tasting and very large with deep orange rich flesh and a good keeper. They need a very large area for long vines on ground. 10 ft or more in each director ion. Maybe would grow over a curved cattle panel. I never thought to try. I grew them near Edmonton, Alberta Canada. So that would be like your weather.

You need to build a small deck area with benches and a table so you guys can have a rest in the summer sun, 😊😊👍🏼. And maybe eat there, alfresco.

24:17 Broody Hen There are two ways for this chicken to return to normal. 1) Put "broody hen" with a young cocker, just the two of them, separated from the others. A "honeymoon". (Returns to normal in 2 or 3 days) Or... 2) Give the brooding chicken a bath, submerging its whole body in cold water for 1 minute, leaving only the head out. (It returns to normal at the same time)
