People get chills when someone says "Hemi". When you hear one run down the track, the sound is like no other engine. American made at it's best. In this case there is no replacement for displacement.

You'll have thousands and thousands in machine shop work, and thousands and thousands in replacement parts. 426 Hemis have been the most pounded and tortured engines around, and scrapyards have been desperately picked through for elephant parts. 11,000 produced, raced like nothing else, 50+ years passed...

Get to know any Mopar guys in your area, get online and seek Mopar (and other) sites. Hit car shows and hob-knob with the muscle car guys, you might get a basket-engine lead. Someone will know of an eccentric loner top end muscle-car guy who keeps a stash of Hemi parts. You'll have to sift through his warped and cracked crankshafts, blocks with welded windows and missing main caps, and a partial set of rods with replacements that may need balancing. $$$$$. I was fortunate to live back in the day when you could pick up a Hemi for $1,500, or baskets for less. Been there, done that.

Breaking was mostly for the cams...these have a all roller cam like modern engines. Rings might take time to seat....

That was a nice brief history of *half* of the HEMI story. The first HEMIs were put in cars for the 1951 model year, and the line eventually included displacements from 231 to 365 cubes!

I prefer the wedge too, if only for the weight advantage and the dome-shaped pistons of the Hemis, that is the key factor, my theory, that wedges live longer and are more reliable. Most people love the Hemi only because of its impressive looks.

I met Don Garlitts as a kid at the Mopar Nationals in Columbus Ohio in the 1980's. He was a super cool dude. Then I met him again in 1999ish at another drag strip in Norwalk Ohio, and he was still as cool

I “met” him at the Adams Mark hotel in Indy @ 1984-5. I was about 13-14, sitting on the lobby, when all these top level drag racers started appearing for some dinner or something. Big daddy had a god dam bow tie on that had little flashing lights on the edges. Shirley was there, she had a cane and red high top Reebok’s on. Later I went back to the room and passed Joe amato. I said hi, he ignored me. I always was happy when he lost after that. I had a grudge.

I know these guys have their Modman intale for a low deck (because project Ultra Violet had one) but I got to thinking it would be better if there were a head that allowed stock intake width as that opens up an entire range of possibilities for intakes. On the wedge there's a Stage VI head which have a raised port and ypu can use those (expensive) heads on a low deck wedge and any RB intake fits. I was just wondering if there's a head like that for a Hemi - esp one that accepts stock valve covers.

A neighbor of my ex-brother in law had a 1969 Dodge Charger with a 426 twin 4bbl, 4 speed. I loved riding in the car when we went to car shows, hunting, fishing, anywhere. The owner passed away in 2005, the car had less than 20,000 miles on the it. His widow sold it for $175,000. What a car 🥰. Thanks for the video post and very best of luck 🍀

My mom’s made me move it. I guess I was taking too long. Then, I had a ‘70 T-Bird with a 429 ThunderJet mated to the venerable C6. I was take that motor and trans and find me another ‘66 Galaxie convertible. Never happened, went to the military, all of my cousins cannibalized all my stuff.🤬

Draglist is an awesome source to read all about 50's 60's 70's fuel cars. Pontiac,Ford,Chevy teams having to run Chryslers big block in their race cars. Some tried to hide the heads to make you think the engine is powered by the Car brand body style. lol Chryslers big block is the baddest hot rod engine ever. Todays top fuel cars are the fastest cars on the planet. Hemi Nito power baby. There are two Mopar milestones that come to mind here: the 1956 Chrysler 300B had the first US production engine to produce 1 HP/ci: the 355 ci (gen 1) HEMI producing 356 HP! The 1992 Dodge Daytona IROC was the first production US engine to produce over 100 HP/L, with it's inter-cooled turbo-charged Lotus Engineering DOHC 2.2 L engine putting out 225 HP!

What bothers me about this video is that they left out putting a dab of RTV on the ends of the split main seal, nor did they offset the seal 3/8th of an inch from the block. So the break in the seal lines up with the break in the block. That seal is now an oil leak.

I love the original 426 Hemi it's always been my dream to have one in some way shape or form I just don't understand why it has to cost over 20,000 to have one
