Any concern about undermining the slab with those drain holes? Better to cut out a strip of the walkway and pour a slope away from the house. Use that beautiful concrete saw that you unboxed in a previous episode and a couple bags of ready mix. Done and done.

I was thinking put fancy saw on slight ramp out of wood and cut grooves that get deeper towards edge.

My first thought too. Maybe even a short trench drain so the water isn't going under the slab.

Yeah, the drain holes are fine for a quick fix for the day, but it should really be cut out with a trench drain at the least.

Score the concrete like a kitchen sink drainage board, so the water runs off the edge. The next time there's a frost, the holes will stay frozen and the water will puddle on top again as if the holes weren't even there or get blocked over time. Good quick fix though. :)

I agree with those last two comments about the holes. Also, use that diamond saw and just score the concrete three or four times for the entire length of walls about an inch a part and have the score marks run off the pad so that the water draining toward the build hits the score marks and ends up running down them and off the pad.
@sundogaudio851
@sundogaudio851 3 ай бұрын
I would be worried all that water draining in the holes will spread under the concrete, freeze and heave it up....any thoughts?
@olgajoachimosmundsen4647
@olgajoachimosmundsen4647 3 ай бұрын
I think not, because the office is heated and will keep the ground under warm enough. All in all I think the build is sloppy technically, even if you can get away with it. -Potential for condensation between the stone facade and the wall against the house. Major cold-bridge -Slab bigger than house is never good Also no frost-proofing. Neither is slab insulated from the outside = more condensation and again huge cold-bridge. -The roof above/under deck is sketchy to use as a real roof structure. I I don't believe it can counted as a real sub-roof -
@Eger118877
@Eger118877 3 ай бұрын
As long as the slab has a proper sub-base of enough gravel then the water won't be held under the slab. Water goes under concrete slabs all the time in cold climates and the slabs don't heave from the freeze/thaw.
@tii2015

Agreed. A better permanent idea might be to install a trench (?) drain.

I’m no professional by any means but my initial thought would be to score the concrete so water would drain to edge of slab.

@@tii2015 for sure, I would opt for a real drain too. Erik might decide to do that in the future.

That might be a bad idea drilling the hole in the concrete for the drain The water will go underneath the concrete freeze and it can hydraulically lift your concrete I've had it happened to me on a slab

Would pouring a couple of inches of elevated slab just for the interior space have been an option? Since you're doing a floating floor anyway, could you have started with say an inch or two of new slab to elevate the floor and give you a positive edge for keeping water out?
@straight_to_finish
@straight_to_finish 3 ай бұрын
Pro-Tip: use GRK cabinet screws instead of roofing nails for nailing flanges. (Simpson also makes them). Also Dörken's Delta FL would work well on the concrete floor as it'll allow for a 3/8" air & water gap in case water does get in. 1" EPS foam on top of the Delta FL & underneath your finished floor would keep the floors temperate.

Fill those holes you drilled in the slab with lexel right away! Then cut a chunk of the slab out and put an actual drain in to get the water away from the house. Lexel is an amazing product , but water will always win if given a couple things ! Time and a negative slope . I think rays joke of a floating floor is a literal statement within a year .

Hello! I think you love the MRCOOL DIY mini split. We installed 12k and 18k units during the gut rehab of our house 15 months ago. True DIY, neither our contractor nor myself had installed one, but after we watched some KZbin videos we decided to give it a try. He had to run the electrical anyway and the first unit took about 3 hours and the second less than 2 hours. FYI, our contractor lives in Waynesville and drove once or twice a week to our place close to Erwin, TN. My wife and I did some of the work ourselves, and yes, the contractor was a good friend of ours. Love you channel, take care!

seeing you guys drive the nails between the windows reminds me of an old boat builder hack. Find yourselves some 5/8-3/4 round bar, we just used mild steel, face off both ends then find a drill around a fly's hair bigger than the nail head (we used end mills) and make a hole about 1/4 deep in your punch and your done. One side drives the nail without slipping off the other end is for finishing without any stray hits to the $$$ around it. Can sometimes be the only way to get that one nail in, in the tightest corner. Also maybe it is time someone got you guys some of the new battery powered calking guns, much better at laying fat beads and forcing the good stuff into tight spots with good control!

I've been in a similar situation with the wall being directly on top of the concrete and my solution was to lay down asphalt stripe in L-shape all around, meaning it covered approx. 3" on the wall and 3" on the ground - to this day I've never had a problem with water running inside. Pity I didn't suggested this sooner, maybe you could have saved the "paint protector" 😂🙌🏻

I had to rebuild a wall of T-111 siding that went down to the concrete in an area where water puddles. I used a piece of 8" or 10" cement board for a horizontal band against the ground. On top of it I used the standard 1/2" or 5/8" z-bar for transition to the siding. The cement board will not rot. Ever.
