Standard Disclaimer: Putting your soft, squishy fingers near powerful sharp spinning things is dangerous. I've been doing this for a while and I know what I'm doing but even I'm not invincible. I take a lot of safety precautions based on my level of experience and not all of them are shown on camera. Don't do anything you aren't comfortable with. If it makes you nervous you're probably doing it wrong. Don't do anything stupid. Reapply sunscreen often and floss before bed. Is anyone actually still reading this?

I have just done my version of this idea. My wife will love this for a stocking filler. The grain I chose on the lid using the reverse flip method is just lovely . Thanks so much for such a simple idea. This is probably one of the best finished products I have made. Really the hardest part of woodworking is having the right tools for the job. I had one of those spindle sanders but for the cost I didn't think it was worth the workshop space, mainly because it was too slow. For internal shaped work I ended up using a router with a quarter inch collet and profiling bit so you can follow a template and make multiple sections exactly the same before gluing them together. If you've got any corners you can always chisel them out afterwards..

Sweet project, I've had one of those ridged belt/spindle sanders from when they first came out. It seems pretty cheesy but it has held up for a long time and "It works great".

Love this, great little box, and wicked grain in that quilted maple.
