This is the ninth of twelve videos showing the build process of the Vintage Model Company Cessna 140. This episode covers covering the main wings.
The Cessna 140 first rolled off the production line in 1946. It was (and still is) a pretty little aeroplane that was cheap to purchase, run and maintain. It also had stable, well-mannered flying characteristics, making it very popular with pilots at a time when post war light aeroplane ownership was beginning to boom in the U.S.A.
Along with the even cheaper, lower specification Cessna 120 (which outwardly looks similar apart from a lack of flaps and the rear quarter-lights), over 7500 were reportedly produced, many of which are still flying today.
The original design featured an 85 horsepower engine and it could cruise at over 95 Knots (around 110 MPH). The fuselage was metal, with fabric covered wings. The construction of the wings is not much different to the technique that will be used to build this model.
The things that made the original aircraft such a success also translate into making a very nice free flight scale rubber powered model, which is particularly suitable for the novice builder.

Hi Rob, do the wings fit to the top or bottom of the fuselage - I've seen Cessnas in both configurations. I would imagine if they fit to the top then it will be a better flyer than the Corsair as aircraft with with wings attached to the top of the fuselage are more docile, stable and floaty in flight. Great video as always..😎👍👍.

Hi Cosmo. To the top as you may have seen by now lol. Yes I have done a few test glides in the house and it does look a lot more stable than the Corsair.

That's impressive Mate! And more than a bit tense... I've been stressing about starting my 5ft Wing soon... But THAT was so delicate, it was practically akin to gluing Feathers onto a Hummingbird - in FLIGHT!! 😳😧 You have been teaching me how to do up Tissue Covering... Still, I might just make a Balsa false Frame, and practise Covering. Rob, have you heard of "Peanut" free flight Model Aircraft?? I reckon you would be very good at building those!! Cheers 🍻🍻!! Hay Carmine. Yes I have heard of peanut scale but I have problems seeing the detail in these 1/24 scale models so I think I would have to strap on a pair of binoculars on to my glasses to see those lol.
