This is the eleventh of twelve videos showing the build process of the Vintage Model Company Cessna 140. This episode covers shrinking and doping.
The Cessna 140 first rolled off the production line in 1946. It was (and still is) a pretty little aeroplane that was cheap to purchase, run and maintain. It also had stable, well-mannered flying characteristics, making it very popular with pilots at a time when post war light aeroplane ownership was beginning to boom in the U.S.A.
Along with the even cheaper, lower specification Cessna 120 (which outwardly looks similar apart from a lack of flaps and the rear quarter-lights), over 7500 were reportedly produced, many of which are still flying today.
The original design featured an 85 horsepower engine and it could cruise at over 95 Knots (around 110 MPH). The fuselage was metal, with fabric covered wings. The construction of the wings is not much different to the technique that will be used to build this model.
The things that made the original aircraft such a success also translate into making a very nice free flight scale rubber powered model, which is particularly suitable for the novice builder.

Thanks for that Mate!! Airbrushing the water then the Dope on appears to be a much better method to standard brushing. Less potential damage, more evenly coated! I hope all is well with you. How's the House coming along? Carmine ✈🚂🚙

Yes mate its loads better as far as I'm concerned just a pain cleaning the brush after doping.

Just looking through the instructions and can’t find when the fuselage is doped. Nor can I find it on your videos. I’m at the point where I’m about to do the cowl at the front but realising if the paper cowling goes over the front of the fuselage how would you dope underneath it?

Hello Amy. Just checked my videos of this build and remembered I had problems with file corruption during filming the doping of the fuselage. From memory I shrank the tissue on the fuselage before installing the cowl but didn't dope until after installing the cowl as I decided the tissue covered with the cowl is unlikely to get wet or damp. Hope this helps.

What a strange choice of title - 'doping.' As always an expert tutorial, looking forward to the final assembly to see what this aircraft looks like when in one piece.

Hay Cosmo. Yep that's what the stuff is called used to waterproof and tauten the linen of the original cloth covered planes. Many thanks my friend.
