Although I’ve been some what of a stereo/home theatre/car audio guy for many years I’ve never had anything I’d consider high end equipment. I’m currently planning on building a home theatre in the future, actually about to order new LCR speakers. I’d love to talk with you sometime, I can see this is going to be a long journey as well as a major learning curve.

For setting a budget what I found worked for me was building the set over time. Buy with an upgrade plan. Obviously I started that with the projector screen and a two channel speaker system but my receiver has 11.2 channels and is dtsx and Atmos capable. I bought bean bags for the chairs. I have sent upgraded the bean bags to a couch but the bean bags are perfect for putting the kids on the floor so nothing lost something gained. I have sent added a 120-in screen, a center channel to rears and one sub. My next upgrade will be Atmos speakers which will complete my set up. Everything from there on will be cosmetic.

This is certainly how most of us do it. Have a plan to upgrade over time.

For your room you definitely made the right choice with the 16x9 screen! Because the screen width wouldn't change, all you would really get with a 2.35:1 screen is no black bars with CinemaScope at the cost of a significantly smaller image with 16x9 content...
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
I think if anything I'll change to a darker gain screen as my room is light controlled, you generaly dont even see black bars now, and I have a fairly high gain screen, so a darker grey and ill bump up the brightness on the projector it should look even better. I am not sold 100% on 16:9 over 2.35:1 as I think both have their place, but in my small theater, it makes sense to try for the biggest possible size!
@TerminatorJuice4 жыл бұрын
@@BuildMontage What is the gain of your screen now? I have a 1.0 gain Matte White screen from DaLite, in a completely light controlled room, and the black bars blend perfectly into night time scenes and shots that take place in outer space! I agree that 2.35.1 has it's place... but only if you can have a wide enough screen that maintains the height of the 16x9 screen that you would have choosen... that way movies like Avatar and Joker would be the same size on the CinemaScope as they would a 16x9. Also, a CinemaScope screen requires a projector that has lens memory, which is far more expensive than a good 1080p projector... Something you might want to point out to people when talking about possibly getting a 2.35:1 screen. That and the fact that a decent amount of movies have alternating aspect ratios which completely ruins the CinemaScope viewing experience!
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Yes I have the similar, 1.1 gain matte white - Elegance Screen Symphony. And yes with light controlled rooms, plus so many directors switch up their aspect ratios during the same film which i personally find confusing, it would be disappointing to watch a movie like that on a cinema scope. I'm fortunate my projector has lens memory, but as you say many do not!

I built my 5.1 theater in March of 2008 when my middle child moved out after high school. Panasonic Plasma, Bose speakers, JBL sub, Sony DE 845 receiver, PS3 for Blu-ray. I started upgrading it in April of 2008. By going to thrift stores and keeping my eyes open I found two sets of Polk Audio RT55 with matching Polk Audio CS400 center channels for a total of $20 per speaker on average. which I thought of as a deal compared to the five Bose I had purchased. A large spool of FUREZ 12AWG in wall rated, oxygen free, twisted pair cable. ($40) Quite the odd find at a goodwill! You never know. Also found a pair of Boston CR9 loudspeakers ($20) that I use over in the "old school corner" along with a single Polk Audio PSW350 ($25) sub where I play vinyl records, cassette tapes, CDs and radio through a Sony DG510 ($20) receiver and a Schiit Mani phono preamp ($99) and a Fluance RT81 ($249) that came with with some quite nice powered Bluetooth speakers that we use up in the master bedroom. By this year I had purchased three additional JBL PB10 subs ($70-$100ea.) to match the existing single one because it turned out to be very good in my room. Four Polk Audio M5 $(40 ea.) ...(not The M5jr )... for the front and rear heights. They needed work I must say. Their spider has a tendency to separate from the basket, and by tendency I mean IT ALWAYS HAPPENS 😆 however for the money I love the form factor and the sound they produce. I purchased a Samsung 4K TV. And finally a Sony STR ZA5000ES flagship processor. Looking forward to a good UHD player.... Either the Panasonic you mentioned or the Sony 1100ES. Or I may mortgage my house and get an Oppo 205 😏. I'm looking for a two channel amp in order to end up with 7.4.4 adding ear level rear surround. The Sony MR2ES is most likely the choice there along with, most likely, another pair of RT55, I love those "big little" bookshelf speakers lol. That would be 21 identical matched drivers (14 mids,7 tweets) for the ear level speakers and 8 (4 mids,4 tweets) for the heights. Future also involves a Sony HAP-Z1ES slaved to the processor. I mostly play video games while listening to records and 'suffer through' 1080p movies with the wife and grand kids while saving my pennies for a 4K player. "Suffer through"....I know....pixel snob HAHA. Time will tell which one I choose. I was hoping that the PS5 would play SACD and/or 4K Blu-ray. Thanks for the video. -✌🏼

There is sound containment (inside the walls/walls themselves) and sound treatment (acoustic absorption panels and diffusor panels) - both are important, but personally im more concerned with treatment than containment.

One of the cheapest ways to acoustically treat your walls is using heavy curtains. If you look at any good theater you will find that curtains always cover the foam panels. With respect to Atmos speaker placement SVSound.com has a much different philosophy for surround sound placement with their Elevation speakers. I'm now in the process of redoing my HT and I'll be using a bookshelf arrangement for front and center, Elevation surround speakers (4), and 2 PB1000 subs, I already own. I do agree with you that you are definitely too close to the screen. Is that a JVC projector. I actually thought of a projector but since many TV brands are huge these days I decided against a projector. Your tips are well done and should be helpful to any novice embarking on building a HT room.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
mikem mikem agreed. Curtains would be great, I have to add some over my shutters but I have in walls so I can’t cover them which is annoying. I’ve looked at the svs elevations. Very good reviews but I haven’t heard them personally. Klipsch do something similar but I like the stealthily look of the in walls too. Thanks for commenting :)

Very nice processor. One day, I'd love to go emotiva for processing and also power all my speakers through external amplifiers instead of just two. Thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know any video projectors - NOT MADE IN CHINA?

I personally don’t think 8k will become the standard as it’s impossible for the human eye to recognize 8k quality. Therefore it’s quite pointless. Plus studios are just now diving into their catalog and creating 4k transfers of older movies. IMO, but awesome video. For sure a dream room like yours I’d love to have one day!
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex - I remember this debate back when 1080p was becoming a standard, and then again when 4K - so I can only imagine it's going to happen regardless. You have mirrorless cameras like the Canon R5 shooting 8K raw in body now - so I think its a sure thing. Needed? Maybe not, but I think it will happen none-the-less :)

Build Montage thanks for the response. Super awesome of you go do. And deff see you’re point there. Should be interest to see what happens. Like I said though, hope to you a set up like yours one day and will for sure use this video as a reference. Learned a lot of new things. Thanks!!

You skipped over more important first steps. Sound "proofing" the room (or technically "sound containment"...so you could watch at the volumes you want an not wake the baby in the next room. Then there's the in-room "acoustic treatments" (some guys DO make an effort...I'd say 20-25% of home owners...rest ignore it). Making sure there are no "hard surfaces" (e.g. glass from windows or sliding doors, hard surface floors, exposed drywall) THEN---worry about the electronics/seating. Most just focus on the electronics and seating. They don't have a good plan of action.

I wonder how many people buy Klipsch because of the name without actually listening to them.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Can you elaborate on why you came to this conclusion?
@richardsmith11614 жыл бұрын
Build Montage Klipsch are very popular speakers that are associated with quality, but they have a very distinct sound that is not for everyone. I think a lot of people buy them on name without listening to them or knowing what sound they like. I’m not knocking them because it’s very hard to go out and listen to speakers before you buy them.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
@@richardsmith1161 I agree with you, you have to like the way horn sounds. I had the opportunity on many occasions to listen to Klipsch speakers before I bought mine. I listened to a wide variety of speakers and ultimately settled on them. Klipsch is a very polarizing brand, people seem to either love them or hate them, no middle ground. I also like KEF and Monitor Audio, and both of those were contenders as well. I certainly didn't just buy because of Klipsch. Truth be told, I ask most people here in Australia, they haven't even heard of Klipsch outside of anyone thats into this hobby :) May I ask which speakers you are partial to and why?
@richardsmith11614 жыл бұрын
@@BuildMontage I went with ELAC Unifis like a little more warm of a sound and a wide soundstage. For surrounds I went with Fluance signature bipoles and Polk cellings. I don't want you to get the impression that I'm knocking your choices, I bet it looks and sounds great. I guess it's different where you are, but in the US when you walk into a certain Brick and Mortar store you are bombarded with Klipsch.
@BuildMontage4 жыл бұрын
Sound like an interesting combination of speakers. I was sitting in my theater last night watching Snowpiercer which has Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and it sounded absolutely phenominal. It's a 7.2.4 setup. I know Klipsch has been accused of being harsh, but I honestly couldn't be happier with them. I do have two monitor audio in walls for my side surrounds due to cavity depth and Im considering monitor audio as well for my upstairs lounge room. I appreciate you commenting. I generally like to ask someone why they comment the way they do if it's contrary or I don't understand it so I can learn and grow from those who know more than I. :)
