I have a German pinscher. She is a very sweet, affectionate girl, and likes to be with me all the time. She was abandoned by my neighbor across the road when he moved away. I realized she was starving, and began to feed her, She soon adopted me as her human. She listens well to me. I own a small farm in the mountains of Tennessee, and she has the run of the place when she is outside. She is very good about coming to me when I call her, and is very happy just staying with me and being petted, or relaxing on her bed inn the house or on one of the recliners. She has a full tail and rose ears. I'm glad, because I prefer my dogs natural.

@TurnedLeftAtTheRockyMountains Fortunately my dog runs free here in the mountains, although she doesn't stray far from my little farm. Because of this I don't have to trim her nails that often. When I do, I don't try to cut them that short, just enough so they don't scrape on the floor when she walks, and I do it only about 1/16 inch per nip. This seems to work well, and I have never hit her "quick". I am lucky because she trusts me completely, and, although she doesn't really like it, will tolerate me cutting her nails this way, although it does take a few minutes per paw.

Thank You so much for covering our breed! I've had German Pinschers since 2000. My first GP lived 16 years and 2 months with no health problems until the last few months. She was a "Blazer pup" (for those who know GP lines). My GP (Neolith's Alpha Aja) was one of the originals to be accepted into the AKC. What an exciting time that was in early 2000's for GP owners. I've had 12 or 13 working dogs at this point but the GP is my favorite. German Pinschers just "get it". In the right hand there is nothing they can't do. Ms. Shulter is 100% correct in everything she says. Congratulations on an awesome "Dogumentary" and many thanks to Ms. Shulter for representing our breed so well.

You can also use the loop hole in the system and say your Doberman is your ESA (Emotional Support Animal). They can't deny you. But don't get it mixed up with an actual service dog. ESA is NOT a service dog. ESA is just a fancy way of saying companion dog but with benefits to get around prejudice rules like a lot of apartments have against Dobermans, Rotties, and Pitbulls. But a German Pinscher is also a good alternative . I love my Dobe though!

The German Pinscher male decide to get my Malinois X, preggo. So we had 8 Malinois XPs. Yeah yeah I named them that. Very good dogs, all the puppies came out with flappy ears. 1 weighs 80lbs and is brindle to fawn. And 1 became a dwarf. From the German Shepherd grandfather. 2 have black and tan coats, 2 are brindle, 2are tan, 2 are pure red and all have random thick hair or Belgian hair. But the German Pinscher gene is strong. Both good and bad of both dogs are in the puppies. They are security outdoor dogs and scent dogs. The dad being pure bred is 50lbs all muscle. The Malinois X is 63lbs and the puppy I kept being the runt is now 53lbs at 1 year. The dad lives outside with the mal x and the xp. He is actually a good security dog and barks like crazy.

I've had a red GP and when walking him people, several times and at a distance, actually thought i was walking a small deer. Beatiful dog with a heart of gold. Very intelligent and learned tricks in no time. However, they can be prone to get nervous and need to be activated to stay calm and happy. Another issue was if it was cold outside the ears didn't get enough circulation and needed to be taped because he would shake his head and paint the walls with blood (sounds worse than it was). Oh, he usually ignored strangers and one time when kids at the nearby pre-school wanted to pet my little "deer" he actually lifted his leg and took a piss on one of the kids. The kid had rain pants and didn't even notice, neither did i untill it was too late :) He was never aggressive to anyone, he just had more important things to do than waste his time on people he didn't know. Also they're very capable at hunting cats and the only thing preventing him from ever catching the neighbours cats where a few trees nearby. These dogs turn like nothing else. Very beatiful, intelligent, fast, agile and sensitive dogs. Easy to train and sensitive enough to realise in a fraction of a second when you lost your concentration, that's when the neighbours cat need that tree i told you about :)

Please understand that I am not familiar with this breed but have been a huge Doberman fan and owner for a long, long time and these beautiful dogs seem more like smaller Doberman Pinschers than anything else. In the video, it is stated that they have a slight stubborn streak in them. Are they on a similar level as the Doberman in regards to intelligence? The Doberman is in the top 5 or so of dogs that are extremely intelligent. The video really makes them sound like Dobermans on a smaller scale. They sound fantastic and I am going to make a point of meeting some German Pinschers in the very near future. Their lifespan in an added bonus. These dogs seem fantastic and can be considered a hidden gem. I need to educate myself on this breed. We are looking to get another dog soon and I need info Newton Crosby, lol. Do they have the natural protectiveness that the Doberman does? I am not looking for a true guard dog but I do have certain expectations. I know that this breed was the core of the Doberman foundation when Louis Von Doberman created the Doberman so I know this dog has a lot to offer. Thanks so much for a great video and I look forward to learning more about the German Pinscher. Thanks again.

notsosilentmajority1 I have a German Pinscher x Miniature Pinscher mix. Minpins and German Pinschers are basically the same, just different sizes so I can tell you a little bit about this breed! They are really intelligent, I don't know if they are as intelligent as a Doberman, but they sure are! Mine knows about 20 commands, and will learn a lot more in the future. He loves to learn new things! Pinschers are usually very picky eaters, so not everything will taste good. Just use some really good sausages for training :D They can also be really protective. Mine barks or growls at every strange noise he hears. He barks like crazy when he hears the doorbell, it can be REALLY annoying. Other than that, they are a fantastic breed. Mine is a mix, like I said and pretty small with his 15". He also has red fur, so he doesn't really look like a Doberman lol. I'm also looking for a second dog and I really want a Doberman (as you can tell by my profile picture). But their short lifespan is really scaring me.... I don't want to lose my dog at the age of 5. And almost every Doberman suffers from DCM. Maybe I should just get another German Pinscher, I don't know....

luux - Thank you so much for answering many of my questions. We recently lost an American Bulldog and our entire family is still upset about it. She passed at only 5 years of age and it was quite sudden. With that said we would like to get a smaller dog and another large dog. We have a lot of coyotes where we are and now that my AB is no longer with us, the coyotes are back around. I am a huge Doberman fan but since we moved to the southwest and with the coyotes and all, my wife is more comfortable with a thicker, broader dog. She also doesn't have the energy to keep up with a Doberman. It's important to get a dog that has an energy level that matches you. I am not home all the time so I have to get her a dog she feels most comfortable with. As far as Dobermans go, I feel that they are absolutely remarkable. They are one of the most intelligent breeds in the world, they are gorgeous when docked and cropped and they are a fabulous natural family protector. They do come with health risks though. You mentioned 5 years. That is not a Dobermans average lifespan. Anywhere from 10 - 12 years is quite reasonable BUT it boils down to going to the right breeder. If you are willing to wait for the right pup there are many great Doberman breeders still in the US. You have to do your research and double check and then triple check the breeder. Once you have selected a breeder it's just the matter of cost and the wait for a great pup. Good breeders don't just have pups available all the time. A good breeder will also have many questions for you as well. I hope you do go for the Doberman. I feel like I am living vicariously through you, lol. I want to thank you for the info you gave me about the German Pinscher, I really appreciate it. If/when I get one I will let you know for sure. Please let me know when/if you get your Doberman. Good luck and God Bless.

A German Pinscher is very similar to a Dobermann. I own my second GP now. They are intelligent, full of life and energy and loyal to their owner and remain a bit of independent. That is what I love them for. They get older than a Dobermann because they do not have these heart problems. My first one was 14 years old. They do have a comfortable size and weight. I do like Dobermann, too but they are a bit to tall for me.

My wife wants a German Pinscher, I want a Doberman Pinscher. She wants something smaller to cuddle with, She has (PTSD) I want a bigger dog that can help protect the home, We had a female German Rottweiller and are experienced dog owners. The concerns I have about the German Pinscher are the tendency to be more independent and more stubborn and the Prey instincts. The concerns I have about the Doberman are the health problems and lower life span. The German Pinscher seemed to tick off more boxes of what we were looking for. I would like some input from people who owned both.

Thanks for covering this breed. I feel like it's one of those breeds that doesn't get nearly the notice it deserves. I know popularity can be a bad thing, but dogs that hardly register on the radar and don't get ENOUGH interest either, also suffer. Usually from small gene pools. I'm glad the lady here likes a non-exaggerated dog, but then why is her female stacked in that extreme rear stance? I don't get why that's so popular these days. You don't need it to judge angulation or good movement. Also I never realized this was supposed to be a super square breed. That IS an exaggeration for a canine. Canids as a rule are slightly longer than tall. Squaring off is something a lot of people seem to like. I don't think her dogs look square. They do look very nice.
