I'd like to share that not all bunion surgery is as painful as Grace has experienced. I had surgery exactly two weeks ago. I'm still bandaged, still with stitches. I had the bone shaved, toe repositioned and set with screws. I haven't experienced any pain..the most I can claim is a mild discomfort, especially at night. The reason I'm posting my response because I am reading comment after comment about how fearful some people are of their upcoming surgeries, and they shouldn't be. This video, while perhaps helpful to some, does instill fear...and I think viewers should know that recovery can be a piece of cake.

Lisa Kaminsky thank you so much for sharing your experience!! I appreciate it so much and it gives people another experience to see (especially since yours was way more positive it seems!!) I wish my recovery was the way you described and I did not intend to scare anyone, but I definitely do get what you are saying! I hope everyone reacts like you did, but I wanted to share my experience on how my surgery went. I am finally healed on both feet and am beyond grateful that I had the surgery done. It was so worth it in the end!! Thank you again for sharing and I’m so glad that people can see that everyone responds differently to the surgery. Thanks again!

@@GraceJennings mine hurt. Had it 4 days ago ,but not like what she said. Only if I didnt have foot up and didnt use ice. And stayed up too long. If you STAY DOWN ,foot above heart ice around ankle 20minutes on 30 minutes off . Dont get up unless you HAVE TO. . Day 4 was Up a little ,fixed bed blankets with help of course and moved with knee walker or whatever you use. Then back down. It sucks. But I hate pain and I wanna walk asap pain free. . The pressure is the worst, I loosened the surgery shoe to help swelling made it tight tight. That helped. Ice helped . Follow dr instructions EXACTLY, it helps a ton.

I had bunion surgery back in October 2019. It wasn't that painful for me except for maybe the first week. I had the bunion taken off my right pinky toe. My toe and foot was wrapped up in a lot of bandages and gauze padding, and then the ace type bandage that doesn't need clips but sticks. Then after being in a surgical shoe for 6 weeks, the screw that had been placed in the bone to help hold the bone together to heal decided it was going to try to come out the side of my foot. I had to go back in and that removed.

Hey, I am now four days post surgery and I am watching now all these videos on youtube and I feel very sorry for all of you guys experiencing pain. I am 25 so basically still young, recovery process depends of course on age as well...But you guys are also young so I don't understand why I am so blessed to not feel any pain at all, I mean I do a little when I try to move the finger as my doctor recommended (so it doesn't get stiff) as if it was bruised or as if I just took my high heels off after a long night of dancing, but any of the crucial pain all of you guys are talking about! I just want to let people in the comment section know that it is not that painful if you take your painkillers as your doctor instructed you to... because that way you will be one step ahead of the pain... When you rest your leg enough and take care of it, you wont experience any pain and you will heal sooner. No walking, no standing on one leg (because the blood from your body will flow right into the wound and it will produce a big pressure on it - THAT hurts), just try to rest and sleep as much as possible and you will be good!

I'm doing GREAT👍🏾 and I had a bunionectomy and hammer toe correction (shaved down 2nd metatarsal) on my right foot, 13 days ago! My Dr. reminded me that everyone's experience is difference and she's right, so dont let this vid discourage you. I've been driving since day 8. My pain/flexion wasn't too bad, considering I had 2 screws put in my large toe and stitches in 2 places. There's swelling of course, and that's where most of my pain stems from. I elevate my foot 80% of the time, ice it 40% of the time. Also, I played college and pro bball, torn an ACL, meniscus and an Achilles, compared to those and child birth, this post-op is a breeze! I think ppl who've experienced prior surgeries may fair better, b/c of higher pain tolerance and perspective. P.S. My foot looks so cute now...totally worth it! So, I'm getting my left foot foot done in a few months. 😉

I had both feet done six months apart and about two years ago. I had the complete opposite experience with both feet. I had my left foot done first. I had Scarf and Akin procedures on both feet. They sawed the bunions off and my bones were completely cut all the way through and repositioned and pins put in. I had absolutely NO pain with my left foot (but, of course, I was on medication). When I had my right foot done six months later, I had EXCRUCIATING pain to the point I was crying. The pain only lasted about 12 hours and then had no pain after that. My surgeon said no two surgeries are the same. Boy, was he right!

So i just had bunion surgery July 9 so i'm about two months into recovery. And yes it has been very painful, my pain blocker lasted about 3 days but let me tell ya after that wears off be prepared for the pain because it's no joke! )On the 3rd day I ended up getting really sick my doctor said it was a combo of the meds and i made the mistake and had spicy food and it really upset my stomach. I'm at 9 weeks now just starting to walk on it a bit but the bottom of my foot is still really sore. I can't walk on it without my boot just yet (getting there) and not for very long because it still swells. USE YOUR ICE!! IT HELPS!! For my surgery, I had too have my big toe bone broke and reset and 2 screws put in. There are many different ways of getting bunion surgery mine was probably the worst. To get around after surgury I used a leg scooter (which got the nickname LITTLE SCOOT) I found it much easier then a wheelchair and crutches. So now im just waiting for this healing process to be OVER! ITs taking to long! Good luck to those looking bunion into surgery hope this helps!

It’s unfortunate that you were not given the nerve block for three days as I see some other people have gotten it and I did as well. It saves three days of no pain whatsoever it was the best thing since sliced bread. I am two weeks out today from my surgery and I had bunion/2nd toe is dislocated hammer toe and then I had my toenail taken off my third toe so yeah Pain was there Full force once the nerve block is gone. Then I transitioned to prescribe med but that really does nothing compared to the nerve block; that thing was the bomb!

Ask about newer type of surgery with tiny incision. Google it. My dr didnt do it and I didnt wait for it to be here in Michigan. Take a couch cushion or something and a knee wedge and get 6 of those soft blue cloth freezer packs wraps , keep leg up above heart and ice 20 0n 30 off. , knee walker is a must. But dont back up over other foot like I did. If you feel.alot of sprssure and pain your surgery shoe might be too tight from swelling. Undi strap across toes. If you stay off it ,3 days straight except to go bathroom it helps.

Had mine done 10 days ago and it is painful, but I am almost 64 years old. So wish I would have had it done years ago, but didn't realize how bad mine was. My big toe was going under the other toes. If I would have wait any longer 2 of my bones on the top of my foot would have had to been broken and reset. Thank God only one broken, one screw, one shaved, and some other repair work due to age. I highly recommend a wheel chair with extending leg to help. The walker/crutchers get difficult to use after this long. I have plantar faceitus(sp) and now my good foot is hurting from all the hopping, as well as my wrists. Had to get this wheelchair due to a death in the family right after surgery and now I am SO thankful I did. Very depressing having to be so still. Best of luck to all.

I had my surgery 8 days ago on my right foot! I watched all of your videos prior to my surgery so thank you for posting! The pain the day after surgery was the worst it’s been, since then the pain has been minimal. The only time I feel any pain now (8 days after surgery) is when I wake up and first get up to use the restroom bc the foot has been elevated all night so as soon as I get up the blood rushes down. Then also at night my foot twitches, not all night or even too often but when it happens it definitely is uncomfortable. I also wanted to ask if anyone experienced pain when trying to walk in the surgical boot? I had the same procedure that Grace had but was not put in a hard cast, only wrapped then put in a surgical walking boot. Was not given crutches but ended up borrowing some from a friend. It’s been 8 days and I was told by my doctor if I needed to use the restroom I could walk (without crutches) but I am unable to! I also had the tailors bunion surgically removed as well as the main bunion. So when I walk I feel a burning, sharp pain on the side of the pinky toe. So I have yet to put any weight on my foot and that makes me nervous. /:

I had surgery on my left foot on Jan 9th and left the surgical center in a walking shoe. I am only allowed to walk using my heel. After the Exparel wore off the next day, I ended up taking a total of 4 percocets to get through the "pain stage". Today I have no pain at all with my foot elevated. I still am not allowed to bear weight on the foot. I have my next appt on the 25th to have the sutures removed and get another xray of the foot. This isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The only thing I dislike is the long recovery because I am a highly active person.

I had very little pain with mine, went to lunch right after I woke up. We had to walk about 5 blocks to the restaurant from the parking garage. I had a nerve block. That night it began to wear off. Still manageable. The worst pain i felt is in the middle of the night i got up to go to the bathroom and FORGOT about my boot!!! put my foot right on the floor and went OWWW. that was the worst, don't do that! Stairs were the worst I had to scoot down the stairs on my butt. I did use a cane just for stability purposes. I felt the cane helped a lot! I had a lot more pain before the surgery so I was really looking forward to the relief. My biggest complication has been some stiffness in my big toe! I had to go to physical therapy for that. Granted I had the surgery when I was 22 years old so probably much better experience having it young. Got the big toe bunion done on one foot and tailors bunionettes on both done. The experiences sure vary as I see from the vid. I hope you are feeling better now and things have resolved!! Oh, and I went down two shoe sizes too! Had to get larger shoes to accomodate the bunion

Thanks so much for posting this, girl! Very informative. I'm actually getting surgery soon, too. I am wondering if you could explain more about what it was like to get put to sleep? This is the part that FREAKS me OUT!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!
@No-lk5by7 жыл бұрын
xcalabur18 I've had anesthesia multiple times, sometimes it depends on the drug or person but for me it's always been instantly out. Even if I try to fight it. I believe they gave me something to relax before the actual anesthesia but usually you get a mask over your face (oxygen) and then they start putting things in your IV (you should've already had that placed) and they'll either ask you stuff or ask you to count down then you'll be out, and before you know it you wake up in recovery. I did wake up with a bit of nausea but I've always been prone to it.

Antonia Byron I had a stress ball which helped some. I tried to distract myself as much as possible. Find some tv shows to watch (I recommend How I Met Your Mother, Friends, The Office, NCIS...) or some Christmas movies maybe. The first few days after the surgery were the most difficult, but after that it was much easier. I am still so thankful I had the surgery done. Let me know if you have any questions!! :)

I'm on week 3 post op, I started to get better until I accidentally tripped on my affected foot while using the stairs, it's been like 12 hours now I feel swelling and pressure against the operated area with some degree of pain, have you experienced that?
@GraceJennings6 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh I hope it gets better!! I accidentally hit my foot on a desk at school which hurt pretty bad and I had a lot of pain the first few days after the surgery but it got better after that. Then just the annoying feeling of all the blood rushing to it. Hope this helps but let me know if not or if you have another question

I was in the hospital the day before yesterday for a follow up appointment, I have told the podiatrist about the incident, he sent me to X-ray, they took it while being seated. He informed me that the X-ray is good ! That was a huge relief! I was having the thoughts of repeating the operation. After the dressing was opened up, I noticed the k-wire was protruding outwards more than the previous appointment. I think it was moved due to the strike.

I’m terrified but I think I need to do this it’s weird if I’m working 8 hours it’s starts to hurt like I’m stepping on tacks and it’s hitting my bone and on top of that pain sometimes it travels to my shins and stays there and I have no idea why it’s happening now like in high school it wasn’t that bad unless I did a double shift working but now that I’m in college working 8 hours I mean it’s becoming unbearable like o feel like I’m pregnant because my feet are so swollen and painful like I can see my bunion in my shoe and I’m not in the situation where I can be excused for missing all my classes because I’m working. And I’m at school

@@GraceJennings i am feeling much better. Its been 5 weeks since my surgery. I can walk without my cruches. But still can put all my weight on the ball of the big toe. Scars are still ugly. Always wearing a toe spreader. Unless i am in pain from walking, i not gonna get the right foot done. From a scale 1-10 the pain was 15 for me.

Quick update Minor pain here and there. Scar is looking good. Compare to the other toe joint I'd say lost about 60% of flexibilty. Walk normally, can run normally too. Then pain comes along and i need to rest the foot. My advice. If it aint broke, dont fix it. Operation must be a LAST resort, only when walking is unbearable

Ok so i know i’m verrryyy late but i’ve been trying to find a video like this ever since my first foot appointment for my bunion. I’m in middle school and i’m still thinking about weather or not if i should get the surgery . My doctor said the angle that my bone is at is kinda large and he recommended i get the austin procedure . I just wanted to know what it would feel like if i got the surgery and what the recovery would be like afterwards . This video was perfect for that. Also , do you remember the procedure you got ? (Sorry if my comment is long btw) .

Yes, i had the Bunionectomy with wedge osteotomy. . I am uploading a new video tomorrow with a more recent update and showing a comparison between my foot now and prior to surgery. I also have a playlist with a few more videos that may help. Feel free to ask any questions you have and I can try to help out! But I would recommend talking with your doctor since he knows your specific situation :) keep me updated on if you get your surgery!

I just had it today on my right foot ( it is past midnight; so, technically yesterday afternoon.) I have taken two Norco 5-325's so far and I don't feel any pain; but based on what you said in the video, I am not looking forward to tomorrow and the next two days. I wonder if age has anything to do with the pain level and recovery period. I am a 65 year old male and I hate pain!
@GraceJennings7 жыл бұрын
The pain will depend on what kind of surgery you had and will be different for each person but you did just have a pretty intense surgery if you had the same one i did so you will experience some pain. Just remember that it will be over soon and you will not have pain forever! Let me know if you have any questions!!

I had mine 1 week ago. They almost cut it open my whole foot. They put different screws on each part: Under all the fingers, left bone and right bone of the foot. The first night was the most painful experience of my life, and l really am a tough person. The first 4 days, l cried and l ripped my hairs of. I used very strong painkillers and it was just not working at all. But because they were so strong, l had many side effects like nausea, headaches etc. Now its better, but still l can't sleep properly. I don't know hen l will be ok again. It was soo painful...
