Recently purchased a bundle of bushacraft and outdoor gear, which included this British Army arctic (cold weather) sleeping bag. This is an overview of the sleeping bag and some questions, that hopefully some of you may be able to help me with...

It,s inside out. Otherwise someones going to nick your kit out the pocket. The zip is down the middle because you sleep with your rifle at your side in there and when you come under attack you can bomb burst out at the speed of a thousand gazelles! It is a truly awesome piece of kit and i used it a few times in snow at Otterburn training area and it was cold! But once in the doss bag you were happy. Only drawback was the size and weight. Best way to pack it is forget the compression sack. We would put the sleeping bag into our gortex bivy bag and then put them into the bergan. Then you would put your clothing and non essentials into the sleeping bag effectively waterproofing everything in there and also maximising space.

The weight is the biggest problem, it's not exactly light. We used to do the same, just bung it in the bivibag, job done.

The pockets (that go on the inside) are used to put old socks etc in to dry them out via body heat. We never used the compression sacks, we'd always put the sleeping bag inside a bivvy bag, ready, then trample them both to the very bottom of the Bergen. Literally treading them down, so it saved space, and was easy to put away.

I'm only 5'5" and during my time in the military I was issued a 'large'. I never saw anyone with a 'medium' or 'small', and I'm beginning to doubt they exist!! They modified the later compression-sacks to have pull-down on all 4 sides, and got rid of the quick-release buckles. As previously mentioned, you have the bag inside-out for your demonstration. Great for the money, 20 years later I still use mine in my campervan!

Hi my name is Glyn and this sleeping bag was my standard issue. just to clarify the pockets are internal and they would be used to put your socks in, the loops and ties are for securing the inner liner to. also the pad over the zip insulates you from the metal of the zip itself. the small pull tape on the zip is also for easier use once you are inside. hope this answers your questions. JesterBushcraft Nice vid and great that you seek further info from all those British Army Troops out there who spent many a night in their green maggots under a basha in the pouring rain. The bag is a standard British Army sleeping bag which was used from the 1970's onwards. The bag is a long one and it "is" inside out. The zip flap is designed to keep the cold zip off your body, after you've turned it the right way out. The mesh pockets are for drying your damp socks and as said by Rouge Brit and others. The ties in the corners and side are for an internal nylon sleeping bag liner which had loops on its corners that the ties held the liner in place. The ties were also in a couple of places along the zip area too. The strap on the bottom I have no idea about, but I think it could be used for hanging up when they go in for dry cleaning. (always dry clean) The feather filled bags must be dry cleaned. They are often used nowadays in combo with a Gortex DPM bivvie bag and some times a poncho bivvie/basha over the top as a rain stop, although a bivvie bag is usually sufficient in most weathers. They are one of the best bags for general use I have ever used but they are heavy compared to civilian ultra modern lightweight bags. Keep on camping.

You've got your sleeping bag inside out mate? The mesh pockets are no good on the outside! How do you zip it up if your zip is on the outside and your in it with your arms in? The Velcro panels are for a sleeping bag liner which goes on the inside when you turn it the right way!

Hi bud, sorry to say you've got your sleeping bag inside out. the sleep system is a layering system. this allows other bags and goretex layer to be added or taken away when needed. the straps on the outside are to allow a sleep pad to be strapped to bag and inserted into gortex outer. the inside ties are for when you use the light weight bag with the other parts. the mesh pockets ate for damp gear to be stowed also handy for a pee bottle. hope this helps. more than likely other earlier posts have told you the same. cheers for sharing with us

Hi mick, I also agree it's inside out. The foot strap iv'e been told by ex sf pal is for drying it out. Pockets on the inside for drying wet cloths from you body heat. Exit the bag by simply pulling on the two edges of the zip, its designed like that for rapid deployment. Side straps for securing a liner. Your one looks the business, love my one to bits but a thick air mat is critical in sub zero.

Mick, I think the bag is inside out. Firstly any goodies in those pockets could be stolen or eaten by mice etc whilst you sleep. Secondly I would be hard to zip up fully and velcro the flap in place. I have heard the bag is designed to be used in conjunction with the Army goretex bag and softie suit. That way it can be used at minus 35C. It is a good bag and I have used mine quite a bit. The only drawback is baulk and weight. Good bag. Sandy

Hi. The bag is inside out as has been said already.Ties and loops are for a liner and the pockets for drying out wet socks. This bag is NOT part of a modular system like the current British Forces sleeping system. There was no lightweight bag that was designed to attach inside it. For warmer climes the British Forces used to issue a "Jungle bag" separately. Both bags replaced by the new Modular system which is a Spanish copy of a Carinthia design.. The strap at the foot end on the outside is actually for reducing the length of the bag for smaller personnel so you don't loose heat by having empty space. You fold the bottom of the bag back up on itself and the strap goes around and under the bag thus reducing the length. I was first issued this bag in 1997 and used it up until 2006 when they were replaced in Irish DF use by Nanok Bags. Hope that helps.

Got issued one of these sleeping bags (but with a slightly different stuff sack) and a bivi bag on Op Granby (Gulf War 1) when I arrived in Saudi in November 1990. Great bit of kit and I've still got both parts. No one ever told us what the mesh pockets were for but I used to put my socks in them One slightly amusing incident I recall happened when my mate climbed into his, felt the ridged seam bit along the bottom with his bare feet, thought it was a snake, leapt out at a 100 mph and smashed his head on the crane arm we had put over the bed of our truck (with a loadsheet over the top to make a shelter) Fun times indeed

Great bit of kit, kept me nice and warm when I was in the army, you should keep it out of the compression bag when not in use mate, many a time I could not wait to get into my gonk bag coming off stag😘,never saw a small or medium size, I was had a large one so pulled the hood over my head and dreamed about .The I don't remember the pockets and loops, but rolling it back up ,you had to get all the air out of it and roll it up tight, then you were able to put it back into the compression bag and pull the toys together,we never washed them, they were handed back to the QM and they were put into a laundry for cleaning, you would also get a bivie bag with it.

The middle zip is ideal for a dd hammock too as its easier to get out of it . the only draw back Its very bulky compared to my snugpack but I guess the extra size a weight is worth it to stay warm

yes it is inside out. the mesh pockets are for body drying of socks ect The bottom strap can be used to Aire and dry but another use us to drag out a body in a sleeping bag ,if the snow hole or tent collapses with men in their sleeping bags as all feet should be facing the exit as to retrieve the said bags. the covering inside covering the zip it to stop the zip freezing with body condensation. Earlier bags 1989 had no internal ties for a inner, never used a inner in the artic circle. been using these since 1983 and 8 tours in the Marines to our arctic training to -30+

Also, look for the liner bud, they add a layer of insulation, attach using the Velcro and they keep the bag clean. Wash the liner and air the sleeping bag with a dose of fa breeze and it'll last a lifetime. I've been to -40 in these and there's nothing better.

I think you had your sleeping bag inside out, because it makes sense to zip the bag up from the inside when you are in it, also the strap is for hanging the bag up to air and dry, other ties are for securing a sleeping bag liner, I have an old type artic bag which has no zip but the pockets are on the inside.

agree with angelis on the sleeping bag should be stuffed in the bag different everytime not rolled then you wont create flat spots or cold spots, some sleeping bags had tags on the outside for fastening to a camp bed but i am going back 1970ish lol, everyone else seems to have given exellent advice and sounds a quality item..

Hi Jester, I have one of these bags mate and you do have it inside out the pockets are on the inside and the zip pull goes inside too. You need the zip pull on the inside so you can pull it up or down from within the bag. I believe. the strap on the bottom is so you can hang it should it get wet and need drying. I hope this is helpful. Be lucky and be safe mate.

Have one of these ..yes this is inside out ...BUT what I found is if you sleep without the cotton liner it is more comfortable and more roomy (less loops and stuff ,also the baffle and pockets are left outside similar to the carinthia defence sleeping bags) and easier to manipulate the zipper this way .Try it out if you don't believe me.

Hi mate ~ as has been mentioned! the bag is inside out. The mesh pockets are internal and for drying out gloves and socks with body heat. The ties at the bottom are for shortening the length go the bag (if you're a "half pint" that stops wasted air pockets.

Got one me sen. Bex survival is the guy for the stats and such. I don't have a compression sack for mine. I find they're a bit tight in width for me, but I'm a hot sleeper and put in a bivvy in me hammock. The flaps are to keep cold winds and rain/snow out in artic conditions from the zips where water could enter.

Hi mick, I am sure the mesh pockets are on the inside to allow wet gear to dry out from your body heat. The small tabs are for connecting a liner , there is one made for the bag .The zip will be a (crash zip ) which allows you to exit in a hurry by just pulling the two sides apart . As to the strap on the outside I can only think its for hanging up the bag to dry it , or possibly to anchor the bottom of a sleep mat . Hogweed9

Hi Mick! Concerning Nr. on Tab: Please Check wikipedia with key NSN for explanations. If you have 9 on position 5 and 6, the probability is high its British. We had an old mil. sleeping bag design (Germany) you could open up at the foot end, so you could tie the lower part up at the back and use it like a warm jacket on patrol duty. Maybe the same idea applies to the British bag. Or to tie it up to dry in the field without the foot end getting in the dirt. Love your CB vids! Cheers, Michael

I keep seeing these things marketed as "Arctic" dossbags but I'm pretty sure that they're STANDARD ("GS") '90 issue (at least, for the time - I don't know what kit's used today). They look identical, less for the internal ties for the liner which I reckon are a later manufacture modification. You have a LONG. Theoretically, they come in sizes SHORT, NORMAL and LONG. There's possibly an EXTRA LONG. I say theoretical because I've never seen a SHORT. We used to have a SHORT '58 version in our stores: it only comes up only to the armpits of a 5'9" man and so was a delight for the storeman for his pranks on us, especially in winter... Your bag is inside-out, 100%. You close from the inside, hence why the zip has to be on the inside. Push outwards at the shoulders to "bomb-burst" out. The mesh pockets are for L2A2 grenades for INSTANT use if bumped in the night. - Only joking, the mesh pockets are for holding wet/damp socks/underpants for drying against your body. Makes your chest smell nice and cheesey... The ribbon ties are for attaching the liner. We weren't issued liners and our bags didn't have the ties: we'd put our muddy booted feet in a folded bin bag, then into the dossbag. There was a "Granby" pattern liner issued during my time but intended fitment was a mystery: you'd have to modify the bag to make it work. The original compression sacks didn't have the quick release fittings. When PLCE issue was rolled out in 1990, we were issued these things as *standard*. I left service in 1995 and saw no other issue bag. Too hot in summer, many of our blokes would leave them in the locker and just sleep fully clothed (with Buffalo Shirt) in the bivvy bag - or carry a small wool blanket. I've heard of other units keeping the dossbag in the bivvy bag, put straight into the rucksack, using the rucksack as a compression sack - they can't have carried much section/platoon kit whilst styling it that they were carrying a heavy load... I've used both the standard '58 and this standard '90 in the snow - this one's easily preferable. There WAS an Arctic bag in the '58 system but, to my knowledge, not in the '90 system - unless they reassigned this dossbag as an Arctic bag...

For a start it's inside out!! .... Also I don't think any army guys that are in 'stealth mode' (meaning they are in earshot of the enemy) would be getting into their sleeping bag (which would make a lot more noise than the little bit of velcro) to have a kip!! As for the strap at the bottom of the sleeping bag once you turned it 'inside out' you just have to think about it ... What on gods earth would be the use for that strap at the bottom be in the 'inside' of the bag?? it's most likely a strap to hang it on a tree etc if it has got wet to dry out, maybe even to make a hammock out of it etc ..... I have one of these, they are meant to be closed from the inside so that in colder weather your hands are inside also and can apply the zip cover to prevent cold air getting in. the internal pockets can be used for multiple things including weapons like pistols for example that an enemy wouldn't see if they find you asleep after you have made a racket after pissing about with ya velcro!!

Label on the outside, Baffle on the inside. I'd leave the velcro as is because it will be easier to get out if you wake up bustin for the loo. the Strap at the bottom by the label is for grabbing it and going when troops are bumped. the little loops and string on the inside are for attaching the issue liner. Dont wash the bag. after use take it out, unzip it and let it air, then give it a spritz with fabreeze and you will be good.

JesterBushcraft Nice vids Mick, Yes, I agree, the sleeping bag is inside out. Those tapes are for securing a liner, the pockets go inside, same with the baffle and zip. Mike

I have the pattern 58, sleeping bag which is very similar to the one in the vid which I believe is a pattern 90, the 58 is filled with down and super warm, the 90 is man made material, which is lighter and dray's quicker,, and I love it in my hammock:0)

Anyone had issues with the zips on these? Are they known to be problematic? Just picked one up, noticed an issue with the zip after paying. Opens up and misses teeth but not every time. Teeth look ok.... Hoping to repair. There's a spare slider in the little pocket, not sure if they all come with this?

The 58 pattern is better, waterproof bottom and rolls into it's own hood. Only 'down' side, is the down filler, which if wet, doesn't work and the down over time escapes from the bag.

You have the bag inside out throughout the video, most of what you have said is correct the strings you mention near the end are for body 'disposal' purposes when you need to secure the body within the bag. Also the bag cannot be tumble dried which is stated on the label within the bag. Information from 2 current serviceman.
