Hey Kevin. Glad you like the video. As for the Y bones, I just figured out what worked best for me by cleaning lots of pike and trying different things. I used to just leave them in, but I like tartar sauce too much and I just didnt want to deal with bones if you're "dipping" .

Great video Dave, I love to see someone else isn't afraid to use old useful gear. So many times I see nothing but gear layouts with what amounts to hundred dollar bills spread across a $50 tarp. Spam and sardines though? I was relieved to see a can of raviolis, that's civilized camping!

Yeah, if you like the finest gear and the highest tech, this aint the channel to watch, LOL. I used to fish out there with a 2 hp honda. But when the family got old enough o come out I needed more motor and I didn't have 4k laying around for a 30 hp honda.....so I learned all I could about old OMC engines, and started running those.

I just got done eating supper and even though I'm still burping from the supper just over, my mouth was still watering while watching you folks eating the fried pike. Connie and I have pike in our lake where our remote cabin is and we sure enjoy eating it. I have not ever tried to get the Y bones out but rather just chomp into each bite and pull out the bones with our fingers as we find them. I think I might give your method of Y bone removal a try next time. Great video and it was done in such a way that sort of gives one a feel that we are out there with you. Thumbs up my friend.

Hey Lonnie! How are things going in your neck of Alaska? Good luck with the Y bones....the best advise I can give you is just figure out the way that works best for you. It worth it in my opinion as I love a lot of tartar sauce and with zero bones it sure is nice fish for dipping.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival6 жыл бұрын
Things are going well here. So far I have only ended up with half a caribou that my hunting partner got from my boat as we were floating a river. But I may still get another chance yet. We still have plenty of meat from last year's moose. With the half caribou and last years moose we have plenty for another year so we are doing good. Hope all is well with you folks as well.

Great video Dave. I liked the old Johnson outboard and fish catching on an old standby Red Devil spoon. Reminded me of my early days. You're living good when you have too much fish for the pan :-)

right on! My GO-TO lure on that water is a black and white spoon, red and white a close second. My brother has slayed fish out there with a crocodile lure. And the old standard ( five of diamonds: yellow lure with red diamonds....) never catches a thing.

Give me Pike any day over Trout! Getting those Y-Bones out is the secret. I agree cook it hard and fast! My grandfather had a 1937 Johnson motor, it was blue and white (maybe 3hp) , I used it on a 8ft dinghy my dad built when I was a youngster, had hours of fun. One of my cousins was stepping into the dinghy with the motor and the dinghy turned over, he held on to it and went to the bottom of the river and came back up with it! Nice to see you out having good times with your young fellah...he looks a lot like you for sure. Don't get stung by those Hornets like I did last year, it felt like I was on fire and my right hand swelled up and looked like a club on the end of my arm. Great video!

Always look forward to your videos, Dave and this one was extra special with you and Mick on that beautiful island. Glad you still have rights to camp and fish there. I need to take a closer look at how you deboned the pike. I was camping with my daughter (always very special) when she was about 7. My friend in 10tth grade (75) one recalls as being named Kurt had a 18 foot long fiberglass canoe made in Ohio. Beyond being a heavy sob, it had this round hole cover plate made of aluminum fastened to the bottom aft that would have bee where the jet pump would have resided. So, he figured out how mount a transom side mounted on the right side stern, and through providence acquired a 1936 Evenrude outboard motor. That canoe was a crabber like u bet cha! Talk about voodoo getting that started. Needless to say, we spent many days/nights plying the canals, of S,. Florida, sometimes venturing into the Everglades. One early morning we were hanging out on the north side of Tamiami Trail on west of here, and a horse came down and we gave the horse Doritos! Talk about tongue action! Such a fond memory. Like to have a good motor like that 35 Johnson. Remember those back in the day when dad took us kids to Wisconsin for summer fishing trips.

I'm really glad for your whole family that they get these adventures - together - in the wilderness. Especially cool for your kids! Enjoy ... God Bless :) P.S. Thanks for the Pike filet tips ... gonna try that when I get back to MI!

Awesome video man! The bear probably tore that hornet nest down for the larvae. I've seen them do it. Its crazy they just stand there with hornets all over them like its nothing talk about radical lol.

Yeah, thats pretty hard core. They were the small yellow jackets, which seem to be pretty tame. Like bald hornets. They have a bad rap but they usually don't go out of their way to bother you. The big yellow jackets on the other hand, they are a bunch of pricks! Of all the times Ive been stung 90% of the time it was a big yellow jacket ( which I believe is TRUE hornet). if you look them up in an autobahn book.

Ive got that comment quite a bit.............but it was about 65 degrees and I didn't have a cooler...and was stranded for a few days...It wouldn't have been much fun to add butchering to my predicament.

It was wonderful to see you guys out on a trip by yourselves. I have been missing seeing Maisy. How is she doing? Was so glad that the black bear left you along so you could enjoy your fish meal. It looked wonderful. Thanks for sharing
