Thank You so much for posting this video! I have such a difficult time with these freaking butterflies. I seen some of your crew and Regionals crank them out like its nobody's business. This video really helped me conceptualize how I'm supposed to move my body. Again many thanks!!

Thanks for the video tutorial. I am really trying to learn this technique at the moment. My only critique really is that it would have been nice to see the coaching done on an athlete that is struggling with the technique. Having said that, I will use this tutorial to help me work on my pull up :) Nice to see that you were emphasizing the fact that you should work on one at a time rather than going from 1 to 10 :)

I love this video because it really shows the key differences between the regular kipping pull-up and the butterfly pull-up, thank you! :) People who don't think this is a pull-up, they are correct in that this isn't a strict pull-up using all strength...Kipping / Butterfly Pull-ups are just to allow the athlete to accomplish more work in less time (higher power) due to the assistance of the hips. CrossFit recommends athlete's having at least 1 strict pull-up before attempting anything like this...it's about combining strength and efficiency, not just focusing on one or the other.

More reps, not more work: doing 2x50kg is the same work than 1x100kg (in terms of movilised kilograms), but the later requires more strengh to be able to execute the movement. You used, and i bet you still do (2 years old comment) words like " higher power" without having a clue what that means. All you do by doing these inefficient crossfit exercises is actually delaying progression. Stop kipping.

Definitely the best video I’ve found on progression from lipping pull up to butterflies. Thanks!

"Outside of the Crossfit community, kipping is often misunderstood as ‘cheating’, or Pull Ups done with bad form. The reality - as you are well aware - is that they are simply two different movements, requiring similar, but alternative techniques."
@alishin76157 жыл бұрын
Why you fail to differentiate the two is beyond me. A standard pull up does not require aid from momentum. It's really that simple. How about this, just don't call it a pull up? Call it your own version of crossfit kipping pull ups. No one would have a problem then.
@mrlaforgephysics6 жыл бұрын
The video is called "butterfly pull up progression." I'm pretty sure that is a differentiation.
@chazcabrices71266 жыл бұрын
Joshua LaForge ok but there is little to no pulling involved. If anything it should be called a butterfly momentum up.
@mrlaforgephysics6 жыл бұрын
Chaz Cabrices sometimes names are imperfect. A clean got it's name because it was against the rules for the bar to touch your body on the way up. Now contacting the bar is legal and a major part of the technique. So, the name doesn't make sense but we all know what it means anyway.

Where is the pulling part?
@sethhall62004 жыл бұрын
Ring row after you're behind the bar
@waynebanthorpe8 жыл бұрын
The purpose is to do more work in limited time. The workouts call for any pull up variation. you try doing 800 metre row into 20 clean and jerk into 10 pull ups into 5 burpees for 5 rounds. then I bet you can't get past the 2nd round with those pull ups because your biceps will already be goosed..
@sonic344ify7 жыл бұрын
wayne No.Your biceps wont be fatigued.This pull is based on momemtum.So they make you tire out the muscles that provide the momentum and make you fail.You are not making any progress.
@alishin76157 жыл бұрын
I mean if that's your main goal to be able to keep going without any regard to engaging the body properly, then by all means continue. If your biceps are shot from doing it right, then that means you're doing it right. You've hit near your personal maximum potential. You rest, and try again until you fail correctly. This is how you get stronger, this is how you improve yourself. That's why crossfit is a joke to most people, they do the complete opposite to gain as much intensity in their workout as possible. If that's what they're going for then fine, do what makes you happy right. Problem with that is, most CFers claim they can do 100 "pull ups" in 1 set when in reality, they can't. That's why people talk shit. Is that so difficult to understand?

Ali Shin ehm...you know that strength is not the only physical skill required to be fit, but just one of them? Speed, power, stamina, balance and do on...kipping/butterfly pull up are meant to be done DURING A RACE, DURING A METCON, NOT FOR STRENGHT. FOR STRENGHT YOU DO STRICT PULLUPS. Do you also think rowing is cheating because is not barbell rows for strength? Push jerk is cheating because is not strict military press? They all are exercises that let you do MORE WORK IN LESS TIME. That’s their purpose. Is it so hard to comprehend?

Cross Fit haters why don't you join a box and see just how hard these are when you have to crank out 50 or more of these along with the rest of the workout? But no, you would rather sit on the couch and throw bombs... Funny, after over 30 years of lifting I switched to CF 10 months ago and my shoulders have no pain for the first time in years. Why? No more heavy chest days every third day. Before you criticize the workout why don't you try it? You'll find that you are nowhere near as fit as you think you are (I did) and will become more fit than you ever thought you could be.
