The process of buying an out-of-state car can easily be very straightforward but it can also get ugly on you. If you don’t take all these 10 steps before you leave home. If you have any questions after seeing this show, feel free to comment below or contact us through our website, thehomeworkguy.com.
1 Get a Vehicle History Report for Used cars
Before anything else, it’s critical to obtain a vehicle history report from services like CarFax or AutoCheck.
2 - You need an Independent Inspection on Used cars
Getting a Used Car checked by an independent mechanic cannot be emphasized enough.
3 Handling Sales Tax
When it comes to taxes and state fees, listen carefully. In MOST STATES, You need to pay sales tax to your OWN state ONLY. Wherever the car will be registered, that’s where taxes are paid.
4 Safety and Emissions Testing
Each state has different requirements for vehicle emissions and inspections. You’ll need to verify what inspections are necessary in YOUR home state-these could include emissions, & safety tests, and odometer verifications.
5 Temporary Registration
If you're driving the car back yourself, temporary registration is a must. You can’t drive across the country without a legitimate plate or permit of some kind on your vehicle. Oftentimes, this can be obtained from the state where you bought the car, or in most states you can get a temporary travel permit from your home state website or DMV office.
6 Insurance is also a Key Part of this
Insurance coverage is indeed another critical step. Confirm with your insurance provider about how new purchases are handled.
7 Get That Title
When it comes to the title, following up on it is everything. Most states require you to register your new car within a certain period-often 30 days-to avoid late fees.
8 Verify the VIN
A VIN verification is a simple but powerful step. You caen do this on sites like BeenVerified or by asking for an Autocheck or CarFax report.
9 Understanding the Full Cost
Crunch the numbers thoroughly. Use the OTD templates we have on our website thehomeworkguy.com and make sure you know what you’ll be paying in writing.
10 Test Drive Locally First
Even if your heart is set on a specific car, try to test drive a similar model close to home. You must know that you actually like the vehicle you’re after and that it fits you well.

Kevin and Elizabeth, thanks for the great video! Here's an idea I thought of after watching the video: Put part of the payment for the car on a credit card. That way, if the dealer plays sneaky games with not paying the sales tax in the state you live in properly, file a dispute on that part of the payment with the credit card company. As mentioned in the video, be sure to have written documentatio from the dealer at time of purchase.

@Elizabeth, When you stated to check if there is a LIEN on the vehicle, how do you find that out, is it on the Carfax? I thought the dealerships have to sell you a “Clean Title” vehicle, it’s buying from an individual to watch out for a clean title or a fraud title? 🧐
@gtech66
@gtech66 Ай бұрын
Look at the title and the Carfax report, both will tell you if the vehicle is good to go. I would avoid buying from someone on Facebook Marketplace or one of those gypsy car dealerships that pop up in the middle of the night.

I bought a 3 year old off lease vehicle from a Honda dealer in Indiana, 60 miles from my residence in Illinois. I tracked down a nearby independent mechanic to look it over for $130. When I closed the deal, I paid the dealer Indiana sales tax and got a temporary plate. Received the title promptly, then when I registered the car in Illinois, I had to pay the difference between the sales tax rates.

I decided to buy out of state because I was fed up with local dealers doing shell games with prices, contingencies for trade ins, financing with their lender, being penalized for paying cash, etc. I'm going across the country and travel expenses are going to be about $500. Well worth it to get a really good deal without the game playing. So far all the dealers I've contacted ask for the address where the car is going to be registered and calculate the sales tax in the quote. I will make sure they specify where it's being paid so if something goes wrong I'll have documentation.

I did this, and live in Washington so had to pay WA taxes even though I bought in Oregon. I am about 2-3 hours away and they delivered it to me for $250. It was a new vehicle so that helps.

That's what's supposed to happen. You pay sales tax to the state it's going to be registered in. Except for Commiefornia, you only pay once.

Dealers in AZ and NV are now "insisting" that you must pay their local tax rates. What can the buyer provide to the dealer to prove that this is incorrect?
@KevinHunter
@KevinHunter Ай бұрын
In north dakota we have a state tax commissioner. Check your state to see if you have one and then read their website. Occasionally, the county your vehicle is purchased in also has a tax.

i found out before driving 8hrs that the dealership charges a 1000 fee for not using their finance and another 2k fee if you do not trade in a qualifying car , they the dealership call them discounts and they apply the discount to their actual price which makes the online price look great - get this- the dealerships tries to make you feel stupid cause you cant qualify for the posted price without trading and financing, once you know you just add 3k to thier online price.

To clarify, it is illegal in all 50 states including California to do a double tax, that is to say that when you purchase a vehicle in California like I did, I paid their tax, then when I went to register my car in Nevada, I did not pay an additional tax. When the dealer saw that my vehicle was registered in Nevada, I got a refund check in the mail from the dealer for the tax difference from the 2 States.

I live in MD and in my town we don’t have a Toyota dealership. Today I drove to university Toyota in Morgantown wv to test drive a few cars. Only one I got to drive was a 4Runner as the sienna was sold and the venza was…Mia. Also the Highlander was suddenly sold. Lol I know what that all means. Either they didn’t want me to test drive more than one car at a time or they were hoping they could sell me the 4Runner. Anyway I made it clear I was not there to buy and once they made copy of my DL I instructed them not to run my credit. They said no problem we would only do that after you tell us you’re interested and you give us your score if you are interested in financing through Toyota. Now I don’t know if they really ran anything after I stated that or not. I sure hope not or that’s a ding on them! They did not ask about trade or for my keys. Took the car about for about 45 minutes. Took pictures of the sticker. No addons but the total price was as much as new (this was a 2023 special edition) asked if they are asking over msrp on new cars they said no and I said ok well since that is the case congratulations you will be a dealer we consider once we are ready to buy next year. The salesman’s face dropped but he was cool about it. He told me he came from 2 previous ford dealers locally that were “shady” lol (they all throw each other under the bus)

Would a certified pre owned vehicle be good enough instead of a independent inspection? I'm thinking Toyota CPO program like the Car Care Nut talked about?
@gtech66
@gtech66 Ай бұрын
CPO standards have gone way down. I seen CPO vehicles with accidents listed in the CarFax report. If you are buying from a dealership, they should have no problem letting you take it to a local mechanic for a few hours for inspection. You might have to leave a small deposit to show your serious as they are not going to let everyone do that.
@treesnmoguls
@treesnmoguls Ай бұрын
NO!
@KevinHunter
@KevinHunter Ай бұрын
Absolutely not. A CPO is just a used car with an extended warranty on it. It needs to be checked out like any other used car.

I am a Florida resident and my vehicle is registered in Florida. As a snowbird I spend the summer in the northeast. While up there what if I need or want to buy a new vehicle - how is that handled? Will the dealer in the northeast transfer my Florida plate to the new vehicle and take of the Florida taxes and registration? Or do I have to drive it all the way back to Florida with a temporary tag and take care of everything myself?
@billwampler9608
@billwampler9608 Ай бұрын
Your dealer should be able to transfer your Florida tag or they will print you a Florida temporary thirty day tag. Whatever state you are a resident of they will collect that state's sales tax and transfer that to your state's motor vehicle division. Florida dealers do this all the time for people who live out of state.
@ketoauntie7301
@ketoauntie7301 Ай бұрын
I believe they give you a temp 30-day tag if you don’t have an existing tag and Florida here will mail you your new plate. If transferring from an old vehicle to a new vehicle, they do a tag transfer electronically through the state of Florida for you. Myself, I just hope the out-of-state dealership does the taxes correctly as well. I don’t want to buy from Florida, dealerships here have too high of fees and add-ons, which adds an additional $3,000-$6,000 to the cost of the vehicle!!

One of the things I discuss with buyers on that call is the need to be focused on a specific vehicle. We don't plug people into Stuart without them being clear on what they want. Knowing what best suits you is something you have to do with your own research and test driving. The others who have commented here are right.

I've got an idea -- send out an email with a new email address in it and ask your subscribers and all paid viewers to check their notifications or subscription button and reply back to you letting you know if they had any difficulty or were unable to get their notification options turned on at all or if the appear to be shut off. That way you would have all the replies under one email address and could get good measure of how many paying or even non-paying subscribers or viewers were experiencing the same problem. What do you think?? Just an idea.
