With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don't Say I'm Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!... The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Car Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.
THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.
For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get by all the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency, and we’d love to see a few dealers join our mission!
The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Amazing Elizabeth. The "Sitting Duck" happened to me in NJ, despite thinking I dotted all of the i's and crossed all the t's. The damage wasn't enough to involve an Attorney, so I acquiesced to some additional fees. I probably will not purchase an out-of-state vehicle again. It's a shame so many Dealers are such crooks.

I just bought a 2 year old car from a dealer in Phoenix, had everything in writing. I flew out of the L.A. area with a bank check. Flew in to Phoenix, landed at 7 AM. Had a friend from the area pick me up, took me 20 miles to the dealer and paperwork was done and I was headed back the L.A. area. I was at home by 4 PM and had my kids to soccer practice. I didn’t even have to pay tax when I got the title from Arizona and registered in California. Over all it was a 3K plus savings from what I was able to get local.

Great info to remind buyers that when dealing with a out of state dealer that you plan to visit, you are the "sitting duck". You have to know that the flight cost could easily be burned if the deal isn't made, and that includes the flight home. I've done 3 out of state car purchases, all via eBay. First one, the dealer was 70 miles from my sister's place....so it was relatively easy to fly in and get the car, it was a dealer, but really the car was AS IS, no warranty. 2nd purchase was one where I flew in, but the seller was private. In that case, I made sure to learn as much about both the seller and the car as I could from other sources, and quizzed the seller. All the right answers, and eBay's feedback...helped in trusting I was getting a good deal. Drove the car from Detroit back to Boston, no issues. 3rd deal was back to a dealer (Ohio), but this time the car was shipped to me (Texas). Again, same rules, find out as much as possible, confirm and question information and make sure you have everything to register the new vehicle in your state, including dealing with sales tax (you may need to pay it locally and get your state to credit you). If you're shipping the car, get your own shipping quotes as well as what the selling dealer offers. All 3 deals were awesome and the cars were great!

I've had a couple of long distance deals that were perfectly fine, drove there, made the deal, and drove home. And I had one that was a bit of a problem. Price was 9% under MSRP which was great for the car since we couldn't find the colors and model locally. They did add on tint and a couple of dealer accessories, but that was only about $500 and we were getting tint anyway. I was planning to finance with my credit union, but because they couldn't talk to them since it was a holiday, they would not honor my pre approval letter and let me take the car as we live 3+ hours away. So I agreed to their financing and we took the car home. A week later, they called to get me to sign some more paperwork. Apparently the deal had not been completed since the finance guy was out the rest of the week, so I called my credit union and they took over talking to the dealer and finished the financing. It wasn't a big difference in the interest, but it was more the principle of the thing!

Great video. Can you do a show about “deposits”? I live in the Virginia area and there are NO CARS! Every dealership asks you to come in and place a deposit on the next vehicle they have coming in. I’ve asked how many people can place a deposit on a vehicle, is the vehicle made and allocated to the dealership and if it car doesn’t arrive when they told me to expect it, is my deposit refundable? Several have answered “The vehicle is already built”, “pretty much only one person can put the deposit for a vehicle, once this vehicle has a deposit then nobody else can touch it or leave a deposit on it. The deposit is refundable.” How do they keep their doors open on one deposit 2-3 vehicles a month?

Exact thing happened to me. I was living in Vegas at the time and my G/F wanted to buy a Civic SI coupe in blue. It was around 2009 and she was going to buy new. None of the Honda dealers in Vegas had that specific car at that time, and we were under the gun because cash for clunkers was expiring. We called a Honda dealer in LA and they had the exact car she wanted in stock. They agreed on a price of something like $20,995 over the phone (I don't remember the exact number) as that was the MSRP at the time. She left work early and we drove to LA to buy it. Met with the salesman we talked to over the phone, all went well until we went to sign the papers. They brought in some other manager clown who basically said they weren't going to sell the car to us for the agreed-upon price. It was now $24,995. Left, drove all the way back with nothing.

I was interested in buying a Mustang Mach E GT Performance Edition. I contacted a dealer about 45 miles away that had the car I was looking for but the wrong color. I decided to take a ride out there but before that I spoke to the sales person and he assured me the car was being sold at MSRP. When I got there he went out and looked at my vehicle and said you are trading this in right and I said no, I have another buyer for it which is a dealer in my area and they offered me MSRP for my used car. When I told him that he told me well now the car is $10,000 over sticker if you’re not trading in your car. He offered me $5,000 less for my trade. I told the salesman that you were dishonest with me you wasted my time. Of course he tried to flip the story around. I told him I’m going to blast you on social media and he didn’t seem to give a crap so I left. That’s why I would never go far far away to buy a car. The furthest I’ve driven is about 60 miles and that dealership was completely honest with me and I made the purchase. I ended up buying a 2022 Acura TLX Type S. A much nicer vehicle than the Mach E. Buyer beware.

Here in the Northeast with states being so small its very common for people to buy out of state. I have bought a few cars from across the border and never had an issue. Dealers are very used to doing this. In NH if you buy out of state its the buyers responsibility to get the titling and reg done.

But yes, this video serves as a good warning about the perils of traveling really far for a deal.

I don't know why, either. I was was reading postings on another forum about people buying new cars from out of state dealers over the internet, to get the exact model/color/options they wanted. Talked about it like it is such an easy process - docusign everything and have a transporter drop the vehicle off at their door wherever they lived. I say good for them, but I'm not doing that. Too much potential for something to go south, in addition to the transportation costs, and the hassle of getting the local state inspection, title application and registration, which an in-state dealer normally handles. Plus, local dealers I've dealt with have given me the impression they don't deal with sight-unseen buyers.

We ended up crossing two state lines into PA to buy our last vehicle. A lot of these problems are completely eliminated by paying cash. By doing so, we were able to simply pay the purchase price for the vehicle and took the contract and title back to our state DMV and file for registration and license ourselves (a very quick process provided you have the out of state title and contract). We paid taxes there and went home with our new plate and title. PLUS, we were able to completely eliminate the documentation fees from the contract, as we argued that we were doing all of the legwork that fee covers. Pay cash. Buy cars you can afford to pay cash for. Skip all of these financing headaches and traps.

@@annenewcomb5609 Good luck! Don't forget to refuse to allow them to pull your credit since you're paying cash. This really caught my eye. Thank you for the video. I have a signed agreement in Illinois with a car dealership for a used car. I’m traveling in from WI. I am paying cash. I put down a $500 down payment and will be paying the remainder via personal check. The Document Fee License Registration and tax for WI. I’m watching all your videos preparing for the Worst. All the junk add on fees they try to slip in. If I have to walk out of the dealership how can I get that $500 refunded. The $500 down payment on this used car does not stipulate if it’s refundable or not. I should have asked. Live and learn 😅. The little print says I have 30 days to make the deal with them. I am walking in on the 9th day since I signed the contract. What options do I have to keep the buying window open to sue for breach of contract and recover the down payment. I hate dealerships so much so have driven my old car 18 years !!! This same dealer I just found out had to pay 10 Million dollars to the FTC for ripping off customers.

I live on the Virginia/Tennessee state line and have purchased three cars over the last 27 years in the state that I don't reside in (I actually still own one of those car's). The biggest issue that I've encountered is the dealership trying to change me that states sales tax, which is higher than my state's.

I've been looking for a new truck which will replace the 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with a diesel engine. I've been looking on line since none of the local dealers had what I wanted. I finally found the truck but it was in the next state. I talked with the salesman and we finally agreed on the asking price and I gave him my credit card number for a charge of $1,500 as a deposit. I drove over to the dealership and looked at the truck as well as drove it. I liked the truck but told the salesman I needed to think about it since I didn't want to make a decision while I was tired (it was an 7 hour drive for me). I went to a hotel recommended by the salesman and returned the next morning. I met the salesman and we went in to finalize the papers. Thats when I found the car had been sold to someone from California and they were still working the papers. I heard one of the finance guys say "we didn't run his credit card so he isn't out any money". I think they were referring to me. The result is I made a very long drive but did not end up with the truck I was trying to buy.

I guess it depends on how far "out of state" you go. Living in NJ, just outside Philadelphia, we've leased new cars in Pennsylvania and the only issues we've had was to make sure the PA Dealers (never in Philly, always in suburbs, by the way) installed the front license plate bracket on the vehicle. See, NJ requires a plate on front and back, while PA only requires one in the back. Also, the Inspection stickers are different, but once we get the NJ tags and proper registration card, we in NJ just drive to a NJ State Inspection station and get the PA inspection stickers (there's 2 of them) removed and replaced with the NJ single windshield sticker. Easy to do, if not just another step in the process. Yes, buying new in-State is easier, but if I could get a better deal with a reliable dealer in PA, less than an hour drive away, I'd do it.

I’ve bought many cars out of state with and without a PPI. Used my miles to fly in took and Uber inspected the cars and if they didn’t pan out it’s just a Uber and flight home with very little out of pocket cost. But those were all private party sales. I also request very specific detailed pictures, records and info so every time when I arrived the cars were what I expected or better. In all fairness I do know how to inspect a car on my own but for cars selling for over $10k I get a PPI.

When I got there it was the smoothest deal I ever made in buying a vehicle. The car I traded was a total piece of junk and I would have been happy to get $1000 and they gave me $1500. Everything was just as she said it would be and I drove away happy. That was Cloninger Ford of Salisbury. I got all the rebates and everything I was told I would get. That was one dealer I dealt with that seemed on the up and up. I would recommend them.

Ok ...so I bought a car out of state and they sent someone to my employment with the contract and signed everything there and then he took the papers back and mail them back to the dealership..

Might be a good idea not to let them know you’re from out of state before you get down there 🤷🏽‍♀️

Glad I didn't buy a car out of state. I'm in Hawaii and I was looking at California dealers. Almost went for it but decided it wasn't worth the extra savings...tempting as it was.

Our experiences purchasing cars from out-of-state were mostly good (western Pennsylvania). But, it was a different time 20 years ago. In 2003, I purchased mom a 1992 Olds Regency 98 through eBay. It had 110k for $2000. When we arrived in South Carolina and test-drove it, we found 2 issues. The AC was broken, and the paint appeared to have a number of marks/scratches all over the finish. Since the ad showed the AC was "cold", and the pics didn't show the condition of the paint, I renegotiated the final price of the vehicle. We agreed $650 would cover the detailing/paint correction as well as testing/charging the AC system. The car was a beast and she used it for 7 years, until she quit driving in 2010. In the moment, it was frustrating to deal with. But, the car was a decent low cost vehicle which never left my 70 year old mom stranded. After this experience in 2003, my sister wanted a car as well. We found her a 93 Buick Park Avenue in New Jersey, also through eBay. It was $1800 and showed exactly as it was listed. She had that car for 13 years and she put on 70k. We only gave it normal maintenance, oil change, tires, starter, and alternator. I think it had 190k when she sold it because the frame rusted in 2017. She got $800 for it though FB Marketplace. While it wasn't the longest our family kept a car, it was the cheapest and most problem-free car we've ever seen. And for my sister, it was a positive buying experience. It goes to show that yes sometimes it's okay, and other times it can be horrible. If you're sufficiently prepared and have another person to go with you on the journey, it may work out in your favor. But as always, you must be prepared.

I guess I have been lucky for 37 years to work at honest dealerships. I wouldn't have a customer travel to my store without a signed purchase order, verified funds, and a partial payment securing the vehicle. Why waste each other's time? In this market, buying local is usually your best bet unless they are charging over MSRP. Honestly, I really don't care if I sell a customer out of my market. Cars are scarce. I would rather take care of someone that my be a repeat customer and will send me referrals. GENERALLY, out of market customers are only looking for the cheapest whore. CIAO!

Some years back my wife went with me to buy a new car at a local dealership . I had been to the dealership a few times to look for the car we wanted . I talked to several different sales people and got different prices from each one . The best price was from the worst sales person and just a real jerk . As expected when we got to the dealership we asked for the sales person and as we were test driving the car the salesman informed us that there had been a price increase of a couple thousand dollars . Me and my wife always wear our belts and the salesman in the back seat seated in the center so he could talk to us and didn't have his seat belt attached . While on the test drive he was telling me where to turn and I knew the area very well and I didn't follow his route that they used for test drives . My wife knew what I was going to and she held on for a thrill ride the salesman would never forget . During the thrill ride we discussed with the salesman about the price increase and making fast left and then right turns at speeds a lot faster than was safe we convinced the salesman that the test drive wouldn't end until the price would be lowered to the original agreed price quoted . When I pulled back into the car lot a lot faster than I should have and slammed on the brakes as I slid into a slot right in front of the sales manager and sales people . As the salesman jumped out of the car the sales manager asked the salesman where he was going and as he was running he answered he just said bathroom . The sales manager was pissed and why I was driving like a Fool I just said that we had been negotiating the sale price back to the original price I had been quoted . When the salesman returned I asked him if he needed to speak with his sales manager and he said that he didn't need to . We only needed a few minutes to finalize the paper work and write the check for our new car . We did explain the situation with the sales manager and as we were driving away the salesman and sales manager were having an interesting conversation in his office . I went back a few days later and happened to be greeted by the sales manager and he stated he was very sorry about what had happened and that the salesman didn't work there anymore . We received a years free oil and filter changes for a year . I had some interesting comical conversations each time I went back to the dealership , everyone said I had scared the Hell out of the salesman . Karma is Hell .
