I blame delayed adulthood. Our parents were working in a career, starting a family, buying a home and establishing roots. I'm an elder Millennial, my generation was the first generation to really be Molly coddled into our own destruction. I'm in my 40's and I had to spend my 30's basically making up for not acting like an adult and not taking responsibility for my actions. I don't see this situation changing until we change the cultural shift that created a bunch of children in adult bodies.

Best advice I ever got about finances early on was that you can't help anyone else until you have taken care of yourself. Absolutely dumb to go into debt and delay your own financial gain to give money to other people who more often than not, wouldn't even consider doing the same for you if the situation was reversed. Wait until you have the expendable income before you donate/give to friends or charity. In the meantime if you want to help/give you can donate blood, clean out your closet and donate to Salvation Army, give your time to a food bank or pet shelter, etc. and get a much more meaningful experience by donating time, which is your most valuable resource. Could tell this guy was going to be a mess from the start by taking a huge pay cut with no sales/commission experience. I know sales jobs can be lucrative, but that's a lot of security to give up when you're already in a bad situation. These audits just prove time and time again how important it is to get some kind of financial education into early schooling and that parents really need to start teaching their kids better financial fundamentals. No wonder the US population is in so much credit card debt.

Grind that for 9-12 months and then look for a sales job when you have an emergency fund and car is paid off. Will the company that just hired you be mad? Probably, but it is a startup. Burnout aside (which is a completely valid reason to change jobs), looking at this strictly financially, he was making $63,000 base. With a new base of $45,000 and 1% commission he needs to generate $18,000 in commission which is $1,800,000 in sales to make the same $63,000... I would be genuinely curious to see what this company is, and especially as a start up focused in ONE area I can't see him bringing in anywhere near that much. I would be happy to be wrong but I hope he has done the math on this to see if it makes sense. It is also possible he knows it will be a net decrease overall and is fine with that.

Model 3s are about 30k right now, they just got a price drop even. That will make getting more than 25k for a 2018 difficult. I know why man's burned out but if he can get some part time work (or full time) doing his old job on the side for 6-12 months it might work the pain to get all this fixed. I think he will struggle for a bit but I think he will be moving in the right direction in 6 months... biggest issue is trying to get the car off the books.

I'm really rooting for this guy! I believe him when he says he can't live that way anymore and when he says he's gonna follow your advice. If he can't get that personal loan, though, there aren't a lot of good options when it comes to dealing with the car. I also have concerns about his fit for that sales job...I'd have much preferred he stuck it out at his old job until he got some of this mess cleaned up. But what's done is done. Looking forward to the update!

Caleb, I know that you are are doing triage for people in dire circumstances, but I don't recall any mention of disability insurance in the videos I've seen. I never expected to develop a chronic, incurable condition at age 34 that would destroy my career and finances. Ironically, it was about the same time I paid off my graduate school loan. Luckily, I had disability insurance through my employer, but my income was slashed by over 65% during what should have been my prime earning years as well as access to employer matching on savings. It took a year to get my disability approved so I had four months of no income and many, many months of dramatically reduced income since my sick leave and vacation time was gone. Also, employer-paid disability proceeds are fully taxable. We never think it will happen to us, but it does and adding financial ruin to a painful, exhausting illness is devastating. I learned basic financial literacy young or never would have made it this long post-diagnosis. THANK YOU for helping so many young people develop a better understanding of budgeting.

@caleb I'm a fan. I watch every episode. Some critique if you want it: I wanted to respond to this video because I think this is one of your better ones. You were respectful and not over the top. Your responses were relevant and fair. Lately it seems like you think it's the angry yelling that is making you popular so you jump right into that. In my opinion these work best when you are friendly, welcoming, helpful and passionate. I discovered your channel about a month ago and instantly subscribed and it feels like things have changed in recent videos. I just wanted to give my 2 cents. Still excited about you and your channel and absolutely love your consistent position on mental health. Big fan and hope you keep getting more subscribers, get bigger and more successful, and wish you the best. Thank you for what you do!

The commission doesn’t seem fair to me, for an extra $10,000 a year he would need to sell 1 million in product/services, he might as well sell insurance for that low commission pay. Unless there’s some residual income from selling Services that are billed and he is paid on each month I don’t see it being a fair deal.

I’m so glad I stumbled across this page today. I need this. I never had anyone to teach my anything about money. Or credit. I didn’t even know what a debit card was til I was 17. Had no idea about taxes. I’m 33 now and have been struggling to gain financial literacy. Everyone assumes you should know but how? No one I know knows about money. It wasn’t until I met my husband that I realized how credit can affect every aspect of your life. It’s sad that this isn’t taught in school. I learned critical thinking but nothing about how to sustain myself in the real world. I’ve binged 3 episodes back to back. I NEED this! So refreshing to see. And the bluntness speaks to my soul. I feel like you’re chastising ME! I’m working on budgeting with a cash only system. The cards feel too much like free money and I get in way over my head. Restrictions on restrictions on restrictions.
