Good Ideas at the end. Here's a trick: Eat only meat, salt, water. Forget everything else, at least for 90 days. You will lose all cravings for sugar. You will probably, like me, start to eat one meal a day or make a beef/bone soup and perhaps have just one meal in the morning before heading to work. Not sure how calorie restriction works for 100% carnivore, but I believe it's probably not necessary. Abdominal muscles come back without exercise, so weight loss becomes natural. Plus it simplifies the kitchen and cooking and shopping and production/growing. Super simple. Steer eat grass, humans eat steer and no need for pesticides or artificial fertilizers on the plants because the animals do not care if the insects eat the leaves and the steer/goats/sheep leave plenty of fertilizer around the farm. Clean environment.

If one still has excess body fat even on carnivore diet, s/he needs to lower exogenous fat intake in order to use one's own body fat, so it means lower calories automatically.

Dr. Ali, Great Video! Like you said, calorie restriction is not a popular topic in the low carb community and it is nice to learn about it. You are my favorite Cardiologist. By the way, I have an elderly Aunt that chews her food many times and counts how many times she chews. I think it is around 100 times per mouthful before she swallows her food. She has always been in great shape regarding weight and has a lot more energy than most women her age. She also taught that technique to others and watched them lose weight with no change in diet - only chewing their food 100 times. That would make an interesting animal study. Since you can't force animals to chew 100 times, maybe they can delay the rate that they obtain the food pellets. My prediction is that the delayed feeding rate will improve the health of that group.

Dr. Ken Berry says to eat until you are comfortably full. Not painfully full. Not partially full. Just comfortably full. That makes sense as a foundation of a LCHF diet with IF. If I have to use willpower, I don't do it. I don't have to use willpower to fast for 22 hours between meals. I don't have to use willpower to refrain from buying a cake from the supermarket. I don't have to use willpower to eat a very low-carb diet. And I don't plan to start using willpower to reduce my calories. But, of course, my view could change! I'm open to the changes in my body and in science.

In the last 7 years,I have lost 120 lbs. I have used low carb mainly, the last year I have included IF. Weight loss was the main motivation, but getting rid of diabetes was extremely important. The diabetes is still we with me,I am now trying the carnivore diet. Only into it for a week. Any ideas on curing the diabetes. Have mostly illuminated most carbs during this time.Gave up on meds ,,5 years ago, after 17 years, with no results. my goal is to lose another 30 lbs. Will put me at 6ft 175. Am 74 years old. Matt

Type 2 may be cured but not type 1. Is your blood sugar a lot better? The book The Diabetes Code by Jason Fung was a big help to me for losing weight. Or look at Dr. Jason Fung's videos. He has helped a lot of diabetics. Beat Diabetes is a great channel also. He shows how to test blood sugar to know what foods to eat. Sounds like you are doing the right things with IF and low carb or carnivore.

I've watch the first 10 min and other than your usual contradictory assumptions, evolutionary designs etc., you did your research well...Unfortunately, the low carb community may not like your dissent from the main stream ideology ' all you can eat calories as long as it is low fat...' Maybe Ivor will apply it too coz the lockdowns show on his scale... ;-)

Calorie restriction with respect to fasting and time restricted eating, not "eat less and move more" I hope you mean. If you eat too little and exercise too much you will lower your metabolism. If you are a fat burner, it is hard to overeat. We only overeat on SAD. So, ketogenic eating results in natural calorie restriction compared to SAD with all the benefits mentioned.

The solution doesn't seem to work for everyone. Also, you had said previously that we need to eat at least 130 grams of protein to maintain muscle mass, or .7 grams for each lb of lean body mass. So, is eating 1500 kcal a day not going to slow our metabolism? Many things to consider

The animal studies are interesting, but we don't know if their diet was appropriate while they were under different feeding regimes. We see people like Shaun Baker eating extreme calories with good health and fitness on the intermediate term. Very likely obesity is not good for long term health. I would not conclude that surplus nutrition while maintaining a fit body is harmful from these studies. If you are overweight and insulin resistant, certainly that needs to be addressed.

How is this essentially different from intermittent fasting which is mainly the method to achieve the same objective...... I see less merit in lowering calorie intake independent of intermittent fasting...... Rather once getting into omad or something, lowering calorie intake is automatically covered....... I have done lowering calorie intake for 6 months without intermittent fasting and lost 12 kg. However I never felt good and always felt very weak unless and until I started with intermittent fasting only after which I felt amazing. Dr. Nadir this video seems to be out of place and based on wrong conclusions.

Yes calorie reduction causes metabolism to decrease. Fasting even for long periods does not. Extended fasting paradoxically increases metabolism. (Ben Bikman, Jason Fung). Find the video by Peter Attia on the 3 types of dietary intervention.

@@actyrrel I've read Fung's books, carefully reviewed Valter Longo's research, and generally followed this topic. My understanding is after 5 to 7 days (esp 7) the body begins to lower the metabolism in a manner that can persist. I've personally done Longo's FMD with very good results but after 5 rounds or so (spaced out several months) I began experiencing extreme cold by days 2 and 3 - as though my body was adapting to this regimen. Then around that time I heard Attia say he was also experiencing extreme cold on his 7 day water fasts after routinely doing many. IMHO, we don't have enough data to have a good handle on this practice yet but it seems short term intermittent fasting and short term low-calorie dietary strategies (up to 2 days?) are closest to our natural evolutionary relationship with food. BTW, I'm a medical neuroscientist with a special focus, for ~25 years since college/grad school, in the role of mitochondria in disease and optimal health. Regulation of metabolism seems to be much more complicated than most appreciate.

Calorie Restriction is NOT scientific or human physiology based. EAT LESS OFTEN...not just LESS OF. CALORIES ARE NOT EDIBLE....we must stop thinking CALORIES are bio-markers.
