I was police for 10 years before I got fed up with it all and resigned in 2005. These types of confrontations with the public would have lasted 30 seconds before smartphones were common. AB would have been assaulted, arrested and charged with some made up bullshit. I still watch these types of videos to this day and I will never understand why modern bobbies get themselves into these drawn out situations where most of them haven't got a clue about any legislation or how to deal with the public. In this situation, you walk away and leave AB to it. AB is just making them look as stupid and clueless as they obviously are. Plain clothes bobbies and detectives were the stupidest. They spend so little time dealing with normal people on the street they forget how to do it. CID officers were usually the stupidest and most clueless. God help me. The most ridiculous thing about this confrontation is the non stop conveyor belt of police being sent out to try to reason with AB - I cannot understand what they think they will achieve.

Police have no power whatsoever to force you to cease any filming activity. When police use their power (in any form) then they are considered ON DUTY and thus the filming of police personnel IS legal.

It amazes me that in virtually every video of police stations the police don’t seem to be able to comprehend that the railings around the police station are specifically designed to allow surveillance. The public can see into the premises and the police can see out. It’s all part of the Police initiative to “Design Out Crime” and allow surveillance to actually reduce the potential for crime!! The repetitive nonsensical approach that the police have concerns that someone videoing what the public can see is a threat to the police security absolutely makes no sense. All of these police officers should be retrained and tested for competence on a regular basis. The member of staff behind the shutter should be sacked and the officer that allowed that to happen should get a written warning for failing to uphold their public service. Outrageous.
