I live in New Mexico and I've only recently gotten into painting my rifles. I've only painted one so far but plan on more. I did an FDE base coat with greens and browns as add on colors. Generally Multicam is a good pattern for my area. You'd be surprised how many greens and browns are in the desert.

Great video. One thing you might consider is using the textured Stone coat paint from Rustoleum as a base. Let it dry and cure with those really distinct specs before adding your color scheme. It will gum up your ejection port door spring if you don’t tape that off, or will break in with a few cyclings if you coat it. Other than that, it’s about the same for application. Texture is one of the most overlooked aspects of camouflage. Back in the early 1990s, The Unit used a lot of Bowflage on their blasters, and that matte texture was great. Only problem with Bowflage was that it wore off really fast, so I tried Stone coat on mine and it worked really well. After I did the patterning/colors, I sprayed it with matte clear as a sealant. I mainly do Cerakote with low % hardener to try to match that textured look though. For my tripods, they definitely get the Stone coat from Rustoleum as a base. I also wrap them with MC camo wrap.

For stencils lay down a sheet of parchment paper and tape two layers of painters tape in opposition directions and trace out shapes. Then cut them out and you have convenient stickers I run good old rustoleum camo from walmart at $6 a can. Mask off lenses and optic adjustment stuff as needed. Start with lightest and then add darker colors as necessary Mesh bag with light strokes gets the job done though.

I just do the base layer in FDE with the idea that if I'm in an urban environment then it doesn't look like an AR15 at first glance and if I'm in the wilderness I will add vegetation to the light base layer.....

20:35 same with my Rosco. I've shot like 10 different match ammo loads. All sub moa.
@barrelandhatchet8 ай бұрын
I have never seen that from a barrel ever. We have shot tons of different match grade barrels and they had their particular taste in which match grade ammo they like. I dunno how ROSCO did it, but it’s in my opinion the best SPR barrel On the market. It’s the cheaper then the rest of the match grade barrels
@operatorsanonymous17418 ай бұрын
@barrelandhatchet they habitually do it, man. I have a 13.7 with an ACOG and my SPR, which is a 16. Both do it. We have 4 more purebreds in my group, all of which also shoot like that.
@PaulAmerican8 ай бұрын
I only purchase two barrels, Noveski and Rosco.
@JackManiacky8 ай бұрын
More expensive than the Roscos, but I've had very good luck with JP barrels. They are about average weight, lighter than typical spr profiles, and shoot very well. Everything I have shot through them from vmax to 77 otms and gold dots shoots under moa. Most otms shoot between .5 and .75 5 shot groups. M193 is 1.5". That's all good, but what amazes me is there is about .25" max poi shift between any ammo, which makes it really nice if you shoot a variety of ammo.

Testors Dullcote is a really flat clear. You can expand your color selection and use satin colors instead of just the camo paints, then flatten them out with the dullcote. That's my tip.
@barrelandhatchet8 ай бұрын
That’s is legit, where did you get it at? Hobby lobby?
@JackManiacky8 ай бұрын
@@barrelandhatchet hobby lobby or model shops. Amazon has it, too. I usually spray a regular spray clear first. The dullcote is a lacquer and has strong solvents. It's best to mist it on thin.

Urban areas/suburbs - a touch of grey is a nice thing to have. Especially in more suburban areas where you have a good mixture of tree/grass coverage, rock gardens, houses, etc. In city environments, blend your rifle more to what you wear, not necessarily the environment.

Paint with different brands. My main 4 are alumahyde FDE base, then I use rustolum green, krylon stage and tractor supply green. Contrasts well under NODs, looks natural in all light even partly maintains the pattern under thermal too when cool. My base is pretty light tan like multicam thin/short tiger stripe, that way when I veg the gun it has good micro camo
@riu.11808 ай бұрын
Tiger stripe is always sexy on a rifle. I was using masking tape cut by a razor into shape, but I just used the Dish Soap Stripes method and it looks pretty awesome too.
@John_4398 ай бұрын
Painted my first rifle a year ago copying a gwat Era style with a little extra green and it works pretty well in my area. That rifle is wearing in beautifully and has been my favorite to run since then. I will say I don't even tape over all of that stuff mostly CH and muzzle device. For anyone interested in longterm wear magpul plastic holds onto paint better than bcm plastic. Not sure what the difference is but my bcm furniture wears much faster than the magpul stuff once painted.

@lawdawg02actual4 ай бұрын
First off great video and tips. Thank you. You are correct about being able to learn different tips and tricks for your toolbox by watching how other people paint their guns. I’ve painted many guns, but over time I’ve learned that I like a combination of freehand and homemade “stencils.” I live in an area that is very green during spring and summer and brown during fall and winter with some greens remaining. I see people painting “leaves” using natural vegetation but they start with a light color like tan. I start with a gradient of different greens and the come back with the tans and browns so the “leaves” are actually green. Then I mist in different places where it needs to be lighter or darker with the appropriate color(s). As far as stencils, I use a combination of layers of ghillie string and jute and a technique I picked up right here on KZbin using Elmer’s glue. I don’t use an airbrush like in the video but I do layers using the glue stencil. Here’s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHuxg3qobNdojbssi=HPvhFafeu35uVne1
