Referring to your first thought on maybe why men started wearing trousers. I feel it could have been to do with the new tailoring of the trousers itself, how trousers had become a new type of clothing. Trousers also would have been more expensive because of higher amount of material and skill when making them (at the time). The price point adding to its more prestigious, powerful look this led onto the idea importance. At the time men would often go to work more so then women leading into the trend of only men wearing trousers. I feel that that rule has stuck for so long now and the main issue is the social issue rather than skirts on men being fashionable or not ( just like u were saying as it's very common in other areas of the world) and I feel as women have started to wear suits it has been the social aspect that has been key part within the powerful look rather than the clothes themselves. Obviously there are many other aspects towards this topic especially with what you were saying about the cuts and fits of the clothes themselves. Just a few of my thoughts..

I totally agree and someone in the comments raised a great point as to why most skirts made for women don’t fit men. They said because skirts made for women are made in context of the average standard size and proportions of a woman. This is why I’m a big proponent of wearing skirts specifically made for men.

I do like that point about women showing power and strength by wearing pants. It is a little weird how a women can wear pants and be a boss, but if men wears a skirt he's weaker or fem. I think that if we push men's skirts to be something that can be tailored and/or fashionable I think it could work.

I really agree with this. Some people just try too hard to be “non-conformists.” Those type of people just throw anything on for shock value and add to the idea that skirts aren’t for men. The more people see a skirt like any other piece of clothing the better. Men deeply consider what trousers they wear based on their proportions (E.g high waisted trousers make short legs look longer). It should be similar for skirts.

I also think if more women would be more encouraging and supportive to guys wearing skirts this can lend to more acceptance by guys who are either homophobic, socially fearful or just stubbornly narrow minded and eventually adopt wearing skirts. One other thing, skirts like shirts, there are styles obviously feminine, neutral, and masculine. Already there are skirts out there that guys can wear as neutral. Take the knee length stretch denim skirts, or the ankle length denim skirts both with the A geometric design along with pockets and the closure on the right side typical of men’s wear and you have skirts a guy can wear.

Dresses or skirts are not genderize itself. It is only “feminine” when the society wants to call it that way, the same way goes to high heels which is originally created for men. Nowaday, brands like Random Identity is trying so hard break the “norm” created by the society while people still giving a weird look when a men wear a skirt. Hopefully it is just a matter of time when starting to accept a more unisex clothes.

But why? 99% of men don't even feel the need to wear a skirt. Why do we need to push unisex clothing? Mens clothing suits men and womens clothing suits women. Its what makes us both stand out and look good. I think it will look very boring if everyone wears the same clothing.
@ZondaWong
@ZondaWong 4 жыл бұрын
La Garde XCVIII Maybe ill repharse my word. In my opinion, everyone should wear what they wanna wear, whether if it is considered as “masculine” or “feminine”. I was saying the society should accept unisex clothing, not forcing the industry to move towards unisex. It would be soooo boring if men can only wear menswear or women can only wear womenswear. Fashion is all about variety. And also please do not make assumption for every men in this world. It could be just the social norm that limits their way of thinking.
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I don’t think clothing would be boring if we made it unisex because people would just express themselves how they see fit. In fact if the world was that way everyone would dress more unique and individual. The reason why most people dress the same now is due to fear of external judgement. Put most people now in a society where they won’t get judged for whatever they wear and you’ll see people would dress even more different from each other.

I've seen trendy 'e-boys' across social media wearing short pink crop tops and shirts to be different and gender inclusive but without their audience they would never dream to wear that. I totally agree with you. No offence to the e-boys but a lot of the ones I’ve seen online are the type that force themselves to be different because they want to be viewed as “non conformists.” Style is subjective so I can’t definitely say they look bad but to me their outfits look off. Just the same way a man won’t just throw on any random suit to go to an event, they will find a suit that fits. I think that’s how wearing skirts for men should be applied. That’s why I know exactly what you meant by “they are pushing the idea of masculinity in feminine clothing with the wrong ambitions”

Well well, I did raid my partners robe last September 2023 in the heat wave. I “borrowed” mini skirt for a drive of 380 miles to the West Country in a Campervan with no air con. It was bearable due to the skirt. But after that I realised what I was missing so I am now a total convert to the skirt,and in the cool of the evening with tights. I don’t care what anybody says, until you have tried it you don’t know what you’re missing. Everything else is male attire.

I definitely like the fact that you’re saying fashion is a form of self-expression, while also talking about one garment, when made a certain way can flatter one gender (maybe more than other, maybe not). And I think that’s where it really helps me to understand unisex clothing. Which in my opinion should be the accurate balance between, a “feminine” and a “masculine” skirt. A skirt not just made for a particular gender but an average body type regardless of the gender. Definitely some food for thought for someone who wants to get into unisex clothing. Good job on this one!👍🏽

Started wearing a skirt for the first time this week (as a man) and it felt amazing and comfortable, but it was kind of balancing with the feeling of constantly being watched at. When I bought it in a thrift store I almost didn't want to leave the changing room out of fear from the looks that people would give me. I would love to see men in skirts and kilts become common. I would also like to see nightshirts for sale in stores for men. I own 4 or 5. A couple are actually women's knit dresses knee length or above. I also have 5 kilts I'm trying to wear more often. My wife is ok with me in kilts. The question is not whether people can wear skirts in contexts where others already frame it as something understandable, like it's traditional (and do Scottish men still wear kilts, and Japanese men still wear kimonos, except for celebrations or special events?) or something, the question is whether this symbolic expression and visual experience can thrive in the West. One might similarly ask whether I can make Taiwanese food big in the West. It's not that Taiwanese food is bad or insane, the question is one of success in generalizing to other contexts. In that respect, I think Thom Browne's vision isn't going to be move the needle, but I applaud him for making the move.

Learning of men wearing kilts as a child opened my eyes to how vast culture is, and if I can inject my faith a bit, how God transcends out local cultures. The only reason I would not wear a skirt is how I feel I fit in with my surroundings. While I do have an appreciation, I do not exactly fit in with where I live. I feel that wearing a skirted garment would be too much.

Look, I get it. It's a bit of a leap. There's some warranted apprehension that comes with it. When I started wearing skirts, I only wore them in my room, by myself, and I'd change even if I needed to go to the bathroom. After a while, I wore them around the house, and yeah, there were questions. But you can always answer a question with a question. "Why do you wear skirts?" - "Why don't you?" Over time you just build up, and trust me, if your friends are cool, it's not going to be an issue. I've worn skirts in biker bars, all kinds of rough places, zero issues. At worst, some dudes were confused, but all that happened was some genuinely curious folks had some questions that I was happy to answer. I met the love of my life while I was wearing a skirt, leather jacket, and rocking long hair and a giant bushy beard. Talk about getting laid on hard mode, but we're 7 years in and going strong. If it's not for you, then by all means, don't do it. But don't refrain from trying it out over fear of social stigma. Bottom line is they're comfortable as a robe or a towel. Nothing binding your crotch. I don't know about you but I can use all the free room I can get.

This reminds me of a tweet I ran across where a guy was asking if men could bring back 'tall tees'. It's interesting that without question of gender/sexuality that was a trend, and culturally a lot of African and middle eastern countries men wear longer shirts. In my most brutally honest and controversial opinion I think only "hetrosexual" men in the west can ultimately change men's fashion at large. There's a lot of activities that western men won't engage with due to perception of sexuality. In no way am I trying to offend but when it comes to wearing skirts or heck even piercings, or certain hair styles that conversation is the elephant in the room. Another potential problem is if a man were to wear a skirt but had hair legs would that have an effect on the look?

I started off wearing denim maxi skirts. Easily available on eBay and you can go for either an A line or pencil style. Both look very good. I usually wear them with heels and it looks and feels amazing! You should also consider a kilt and there are plenty of modern styles around. I do have a couple of kilts but I tend to prefer skirts. I now wear other styles of skirts and my favourite is a long leather maxi. I generally prefer long skirts as a) you feel the skirt around your legs and b) I don’t like showing my legs. When I wear short skirts I’ll wear with over knee boots.

A skirt is the lower part of a dress or gown, which covers the person from the waist down, or a separate outer garment that serves this purpose. The hem of skirts can vary depending on cultural conceptions of modesty and aesthetics, as well as a person's personal taste, which can be influenced by factors such as fashion and social context. Most skirts are stand-alone garments, but some skirt-like panels can be part of another garment, such as tights, shorts, and swimsuits. In the Western world, women typically wear skirts, with a few exceptions, such as the Izaar (worn by men in Islamic cultures), the Kilt (which is a traditional male garment in Scotland and Ireland, and sometimes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and the Fustanella (which is a traditional men's garment in Greece). Many fashion designers, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Kenzo and Marc Jacobs, have shown men's skirts. Transgressing social codes, Gaultier frequently introduces the skirt into men's clothing collections, as a way of injecting novelty into men's outfits, the most famous being the sarong worn by David Beckham. Both men and women from many different cultures wear traditional skirts. In its simplest form, a skirt can be a draped garment made from a single piece of fabric (such as sarongs), but most skirts fit close to the body at the waist or hips and are fuller below, with the volume introduced by darts, brackets, pleats or panels. Modern skirts are usually made of light to medium weight fabrics, such as denim, jersey, worsted, or poplin. Skirts made of thin or clingy fabrics are often worn with slips so that the skirt material provides better coverage and for modesty.

Can a man wear a skirt? Yes. Should a man wear a skirt? Most definitely, YES. Why? Well, chaps have those bits and bobs downstairs that need to be kept cool - that is why they are outside and not tucked away out of harm's way!! Why don't many men? Because it is frowned upon by society for some reason. Possibly because men are supposed to be if and tough and look masculine and never look like a 'sissy'. Why this mind-set still persists, I don't know. Men wear suits to work, and not hard-wearing jeans. They wear lightweight trousers and shirts and not animal skins when they go out. But, wear a skirt and society WILL look, and it WILL judge. I know, I have seen it happen. I'm not suggesting that we should wear pretty flowery ones [although there is nothing wrong with that at all!], but I would suggest a kilt type, and that brings me onto a completely different matter - a man in a kill is [often] admired by a woman; again it may be the rough and tough look, I don't know, I'm not a woman. But the double standard is disgraceful. Men, wear a skirt and protect those dangly bits! Last word... on kills. A woman sees a man I a kilt and asks what is worn under it. 'Nothing,' replies the man, 'it's all in fine working order.' And that is just it, a skirt or kilt WILL help keep it that way!

I like how you presented the facts as the truth about it rather than an opinion by one society or another, just the facts. I like that. Thanks. I live in Florida, and I followed the latitude across, an I think it runs somewhere across North Africa, Morocco, and similar. These regions wear clothing that is suitable for the heat and humidity and practical purposes; and a forced "dress code" is not something that public opinion should have any concern about, really. Why, should societal pressures force a man to wear tight fitting uncomfortable and impractical clothing in a climate that is more suited to a loose-fitting garment that covers the skin from the harmful UV rays from the sun. Go figure. NO really, think about this for a minute; please.

Ultimately, clothes do have genders, clothes that are made for the average measurements of a gender, be it a man for example, will look best suited on a man because of the factors already mentioned such as silhouette, cuts and body measurements. However, this doesnt mean that you can't wear clothes that are designed for the opposite gender. You can wear whatever you want at the end of the day but you'll have to acknowledge although you're breaking the norms of western society ( a different mindset from what ive found to be more common in a more predominantly less diverse, rural areas and ghettos ) it will come with the cost of always getting ignorant remarks. Then again, dont think just because your wearing a unisex or opposite gendered piece on your body that it will look great automatically, at the end of the day style is subjective but you also have to be considerate with how you style things and it's often obvious when a fit isn't considered. Pieces like skirts in a fit should be especially thought through when styling considering you're breaking barriers in western society, this way so people know in real life its possible for men to pull it off by focusing on playing with colours, cuts and the ultimate silhouette to make a banging fit. It comes all down to how you style it folks.

recently a lot of teenage boys and men on tiktok are starting to wear skirts and other traditionally feminine clothing such as @capricorncoochie, @urfavboyharry, and @.jvd and there's this trend called femboy friday and i love how teenage boys are starting to feel comfortable experimenting with their style and wearing whatever they want bc you can see on their videos just how excited and confident they look while wearing skirts and im glad that the comments have nothing but praises for them

I agree with you on this. There are many clothing items that can be worn by both genders if they're designed properly. I just think Western fashion is excessively rigid and stupid because fluidity can happen if anyone knows how to do it; but unfortunately nearly everyone is too ignorant for that. I just think we're still in the phase women were at when they wanted to wear more than dresses and skirts. Not to mention rarely anyone takes risks anymore to make something they want happen; which is why everyone goes to the notion that this is a gay thing to do. (btw I am only talking about this from the perspective of making items typically made for a woman to look masculine so they can fit men too, and vise versa. I am not in any way suggesting to look like the opposite gender.)

Okay, I've started giving skirts a go, here are a few thoughts: 1. Style and looking good. I'm starting from scratch trying to understand what kind of skirt I feel would look good on me, and what to wear with it. I don't mind the idea of looking masculine, as an option, however it's not really a concern. The main thing I am looking to avoid is giving the impression that I am trying to "pass" as a woman. I'm fine with other people trying to do that, and horrified at the problems they face as a result. My difficulty is the education, there isn't a great deal of good information and advice to consider in my experience. Also where to buy ones designed for my body and at what price? 2. Connected to number one is people and social attitudes! If I go experimenting with style using all the traditional clothing options designed for men, nobody gives a damn about bad choices for the most part, so I can mess about with different styles, get feedback and decide how I feel. You don't get that luxury with skirts, you can't quietly fail, you even risk abuse or worse when you do it well! I think that is one of the oppressive forces limiting the numbers experimenting

I found a skirt that was left abandon in my closet by a lady friend. When i packed it i thought it was one of my under armor shirts because the color (black) and fabric (nylon / spandex) are very similar. The style looks wrapped maybe like a tennis / sports garment. I tried it on, it fit well the soft stretchy fabric conformed to my stocky body without being tight. Was really comfortable! It was a hot humid day, being open to the under carridge offered air flow that was refreshing. Me, myself felt confident and entirely comfortable in it. Face it how can it be uncomfortable? No resteictions no pinch no bind, limitless man space. I was like - I really like wearing this! Well until I heard my roomate was having female company over. I was like man shes gonna think I'm weird. I pretty much kept it on until I head the knock at the door. Now thinking back I'm a little disapointed in myself for not experimenting with it and gaging her reactions. Everyrime I see that skirt, now in my dresser drawer I want to put it on.

Mate, I wear knee high boots and skirts and I really understand you. What I start doing was to talk to my friends, and explain them. All of them accepted me, and I'm very glad about it. Then I started to go to their places to play board games or drink a beer or something and I switch my outfit, and they don't have problems at all. Specially girls tend to understand it better (my question right now is if they still think that a "travesty" guy is attractive). But they are very supportive. All this is to tell you that, probably if you speak it first, will be easier to start wearing your skirt later, with people that will support you and you'll feel comfortable. Hope it works for you :)

Good points discussed in there. I've got some man skirts. I've also got some "women" skirts too I sometimes wear. But they are just as hard for me to find to buy as the man-skirts, cuz it's hard to find ones I don't think look too "girly" for the aesthetic I'm after - which fit's what you were saying about silhouette and masculine-looking skirts. If it's got gold fancy zips, tiny pockets, or pink flowery buttons, I'm definitely a no. But each to their own, clothes are just a way to artistically express yourself however you like. Trousers just get boring after a while. 😜

In short....males can wear whatever the heck they want. It is actually far more Alpha for a man to wear "feminine" styles, and identify as male and proudly so. (I do such), that Japanese gentleman's look was actually REALLY awesome...hell yes! It really does not look "masculine" it just looks GOOD, and that is what should be the most important thing. Screw having to look "masculine" or even "feminine" just look GOOD. I am a male identified, STRAIGHT, gender non conforming person. My appearance they I prefer is androgynous/ Feminine, always in a Goth/punk look. The trick for me, is that when I do my styles I identify as NOTHING other than male...even if I look like a mix of Siouxsie Sioux and Morticia Addams. Just to me, male styles are DULL, boring and overly practical.

It's not like a man could wear a skirt, a man should wear a shirt. You see, we have something quite peculiar that women do not have, it happens to be external reproductive organs. Trousers usually tend to be more constrictive and heating. Let's take me as an example, being in a class where I am the only guy it's embarrassing when pants compress my testicles while going to the LIM's pc or standing up or doing any movement. I mean, it's not like I can start whining "my pants just crashed my balls" in front of a class of chicks as if I were in an all-men class like I was before changing school, if it was an all-men class it would've ended up in a bit of laugh and a "how come you're so dumb you cracked your own nuts?", but in front of women, I can spare myself the bad appearance. So I just have to endure the pain and say "it's just a bit of stomachache" with my best voice. And as it happens to me, for the law of great numbers, it surely happens to a lot of other guys too, that's why I'm a firm believer that us men should in fact wear skirts instead of trousers, as it fits us most anatomically

I feel like there was a missed opportunity for not mentioning grunge fashion and, especially, the way that it wraps plaid around the waist like a skirt. It is pretty much a fact that both men and women in this style do it. So I think, while it's not the real thing, it might be a nice transition tool for men to ease into the style of wearing skirts, along with the styling choice of pants underneath skirts, until they can go all-skirt later on. Zooming out a little bit, I feel like this would've been the counterpart effect in the feminist movement. Whereas women found empowerment, I think men should've found expression. But, as it turns out, men would rather stick to the mud some more in some kind of retaliation.

I dream of wearing skirts in public all day! However to get unobserved(mostly), I end up passing as a woman. This is the only way to go unnoticed but I dread being something that I'm not. And it's not for the likes of society, it's because I'm afraid when teenagers cross-by. If I were to wear just a skirt, for sure they'd mock me and maybe worse, I don't know. Also, going in places like IKEA or coffee shops where I can work on my laptop, I wish I could have a skirt on. But then I'm afraid the security guards would come or that the shop's personnel would kick me out or hand me to authorities. And if that might not happen, I'm also thinking they'll remember me and never consider me worthy of being served there. And I love working in those places. And if that might not happen either, there's a level of shame that prevents me to do that, mainly due to people being nice and I feel like wearing a skirt would be disrespectful to their lives, maybe. So what do you do? Anyone in same situation?

Well, even with women there's a variety of body shapes and proportions (pear, square...although I prefer the kibbe system idk) and there's the right type of skirt for each body. This also happens with trousers. Perhaps it's just that nobody has payed that much attention to males' bodies??? At least not in terms of which skirts would be more flattering to each case.
@FashionRoadman
@FashionRoadman 4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree but like you said there are skirts that cater to all the different body shapes of women. Women understand proportions a lot when It comes to clothes which is why I don’t understand why some guys think they can throw on any skirt and expect it to look fantastic. In the same way men should look for skirts that fit their proportions the same way we do when we look for trousers, jackets, blazers etc

Yeah it’s a thing of change of culture and indoctrination, ancient civilizations and eras of the past show us that it really does not matter and no type of clothing, accessory or jewelry belongs to a gender. Because, what modern culture deems as feminine or masculine now has been seen as unisex in the past, and in the past of other civilizations and cultures. For example, in African civilizations and cultures without the disruption from European colonialism, wearing earrings in many parts of Africa was a unisex thing by nature, and no man or woman had to think twice about it or even give it any thought, but now in modern times it could be seen as “odd” or “unusual” (homosexual).

Having my ping pongs cramed into trousers and shorts gees im over having sore ping pongs, free movement with no restriction. Men are missing out! Would having trousers be popular because of the solar minimum and the cold winters in the 1600's? ( were headed into another solar minimum just when skirts are back on men)

As a 42 y.o man, I have a specific clothing style. At home I love to go nude or in toga-like wrap(I live with my wife), and in the garden today I tried to wear loose short skirt, because I don't like to have any clothing between my legs, and the weather is hot. I loved it. There were no neighbors around my garden at the time, but maybe I will go with the skirt more openly. To add a note,I am heterosexual, and I am confident with my masculinity. I have long hair and a beard. If you think about it, my clothing habits were normal style in the antiquity, in ancient Greece, Creta, Egipt etc. Nude, toga(himation in Greece), skirts.

I think skirts look great on men. I guess I’m bias though since I’m a Gillespie which is Irish but my family came to the US by way of Scotland. We were with the Mac Phearson Clan. The Gillespie has their own pattern of Tartan for mens Kilts. I see the stigma being in America. I have worn my kilt to Renaissance festivals but in general public I get looks but I don’t let it bother me. My forefathers were wearing skirts way before we made our way to the US.

3:52 - 4:13 Finally!! This is exactly the conclusion at which I have arrived, but I had not found anyone expressing the same observation until now! Usually everyone just says "cLoThInG hAs nO gEnDeR", and so wear a skirt/dress, which I get, but at the same time, "women's clothing" and "men's clothing" ARE cut differently to compliment the different body styles between men and women. Men's pants are cut differently than women's pants, and so they compliment a different body silhouette. With regards to skirts, I notice that men look best in skirts/dresses that have some shape, especially some shape complimentary to their body. I never find that I like the look of short short skirts on guys because it's too cute looking, but long skirts and kilt-length skirts with long socks I do think can look good if worn correctly which could look handsome. (I remember one time walking through the grocery store when I saw two priests in... skirts?? Turns out it was a cassock! It looks like a dress, and I'd been told about it before but forgot about it. That's what made me curious about how men could look good in skirts.) I find skirts look better with a tucked-in shirt because an untucked one elongates the torso and makes it look like you're wearing a tube because there's no shape. lol Imagine a cylinder placed vertically with a plank layed across the top and then a ball on top of that plank; that's basically what I think a guy looks like in a skirt with an untucked shirt. I also find that belts help pull together an outfit a lot whether it be with a skirt or a dress (a dress can especially look too long and monotonous on it's own, so a belt helps to break things up a bit.) I may not have been able to properly communitate my observations on this topic; it probably could have been much more cohesive, but I'm sure I got my point across somewhat well.
