I bought a very low mileage, Immaculate Kawasaki motorbike (zx12R) from a Kawasaki main dealer which had a cracked fairing which I spotted on the day I picked up the bike after I'd paid for it. The dealer proved to me that the crack was already there when I first looked at it. This puzzled me because I had been really careful to look over the whole bike before committing to buy it. I then realised the crack in the fairing must have been covered up by the "Bike of the month" sign adorning the bike in the showroom.

To be fair to her I went to view a car at a dealers a few years ago, looked spotless in the ad of course. Get there and I noticed a smashed foglight and scrapes and decent sized dent down the sill on the passengers side as I had a look round the car before I went to the salesman for my test drive appointment. It was a good job I did because the salesman never said a word about it during the test drive, and then when I mentioned it- claimed he knew nothing about it and had obviously hoped I wouldnt notice it then would I assume get it repaired before I picked it up had I bought it. Then within 5 mins came up with a story of how a valeter had caught it on another car whilst prepping it in the lot. Quite how they would have done so much damage in such a small space was confusing to me though. So whilst people like yourself James are completely honest and up front, the dodgy dealer impression people have as a whole is not without its reasons.

Many years ago I made all the mistakes you should never do, to rub salt in the wound I knew it, but still wanted the car, a 2 litre Ford Cortina with the twin choke Webber (S?). The owner a young guy in his 20's lived in a very posh house with his Mam and Dad, I went on a January night when it was persisting down and dark. He jumped in with me and I went for a test drive and parked at a local garage where it was light. Car was soaking of course, but I made a point of checking everything I could, tyres exhaust etc etc. Went back to his house and did the deal saying I'd come back in an hour with cash after getting a friend to drop me off, he begged me to wait as he needed the car the next morning, he said his dad would drop him off at my house and I could pay him then (never carry cash to people you don't know). Sure enough at the time he said the doorbell went, he came in we did the deal, I got a receipt and off he went with his dad. It was light, so I looked around the car, the bonnet was a different shade to the body, he'd swapped the good exhaust for a bad one and the previously good matching Michelin tyres were now mismatched cheapies. A lesson I have never forgot, don't trust anyone.

We have all bougt cars and discovered bodywork issues after owning it for a few days, but dents that large should have been obvious. My advice is never buy a car alone, take another person with you so that they can hopefully find the damage that you have missed. If the car instantly says "Buy me" then you become so convinced that this is the one to buy and fail to inspect it fully.

I bought a 3 year old VW Passat estate car from a very big well known Scottish dealer around 10 years ago and after I inspected it in the showroom , I actually bought it then and there . The salesman said it would be ready in 5 days , so five days later at 5o’clock on 12 December I went to pick it up , the car was reversed in against a wall very tight in a dark corner and I couldn’t get to the back of it , I quickly walked around it both sides and all seemed ok , I jumped in and put the key in and noticed 200 miles was added to the clock , the salesman said I will put £15 of fuel in for you , so I went outside with him to the garage and he said I will put the fuel in for you , I thought ok he clearly trying to make up for the 200 miles . I set off home 25 mins later I get to my garage , park it in and walk to the back to discover a great big dent in the bumper ….. I didn’t go back because I knew he would say you must have done that when you left , so I got it fixed myself at £350.00 … I will never buy a car from them again and to date 3 cars later haven’t.

I know some dealerships will use certain products that hide scratches in paintwork, but Ive never heard of one hiding a dent. Buyer obviously didnt look carefully enough before she bought the car. But the argument still stands on if the dealership told her about the damage or not. IF they didnt make it clear to her that there was some damage then they were obviously operating in bad faith. Sales person could have also be a junior or new employee there so didnt know about the damage before hand. There isnt enough information to come to any serious conclusion. Both seller and buyer could also be operating in bad faith.

When my wife bought a brand new car, she inspected it in the showroom then went and did all the paperwork in an office while they pulled the car out of the showroom for her to drive home. When she got home i noticed a big scrape and missing paint from the front end of the car. Definitely wasn't like that when she inspected it, she hadn't had an accident but she remembers that another customer was sat on a stool at that corner of the car in the showroom who left after she inspected it. The stool height matched the damage but they claimed the CCTV wasn't working so no evidence to say the damage occured under their care. It took 3 months of arguing and 3 repairs to get it to standard. Unsurprisingly the dealer after pressure from the manufacturer did it as "goodwill" we've used another dealer for all servicing and aftercare.

Re: Product to level out dents.. Not an unreasonable question to ask, imo, if someone has little knowledge of cars. As it happens, I bought my 2006 Yaris from an eBay seller. To get there, I had to take a train, then a bus, then a 3 mile uphill trudge on a very warm summer's day. On arrival, hot, tired, and sweaty, I gave the car the best look around in the circumstances. Drove home fine. Couple of weeks later, after a few summer rains, I noticed some substantial paint blemishes that had appeared. Yes, to disguise the several patches of lacquer peel ( red car ), the seller had polished them with some of those red wax coatings..., that had now washed away. So, point is, ... if someone told me that car dealers could disguise bumps, I'd just about almost believe them.

To be honest people are so unobservant that they wouldn't necessarily notice if they looked round one car and were sold/bought a different one. If you aren't a car person you don't look at cars in the same way. You may be very stressed and anxious and miss things that are very obvious. Dealers do at the very least gloss over things (some near me certainly). You view the advert online and everything looks great and when you arrive the car is dented or swimming in water or looks like it sat behind a gritter lorry for a few miles. Said company or group of companies seem to price their cars as if they were in good condition and yet most of them look like insurance write offs (that haven't been repaired).

Missing a new concept here! Why can't we get that stuff put into car washes? Then if you have a dented car and need to go somewhere posh just go down to the car wash and select that option. Then you have 24 hours of a dent free car. What do you all think?
