The arcade analogy fits. In the mid-90s, home consoles came close to what you could experience in the arcades. It wasn't 100% but it was good enough for people to favor staying at home. Same thing with movies. The theater is a better experience due to the screen size and audio but you can have a home experience that is close enough.

John Campea mentioned the shortened release schedule is one reason movie sales are low. Also, movies need to be made for cheaper. Not every movie needs to be a billion dollar film. I agree with him.

I kept hearing Fall Guy was a flop and decided to check the numbers myself and was surprised to see it nearing 150mil worldwide. Those are fine numbers for a movie like that. Why is it considered a flop? Then I found out the budget was like 140 mil, and thought ah...that would be the culprit

@Gus_Magnus It is possible to make cheaper films that don't look cheap aka Godzilla minus one and The Chosen. Also, blumhouse makes affordable films that profit. Maybe not billions but a profit nevertheless.

@Gus_MagnusThere are far fewer low-budget and mid-budget movies now than there were 20 or 30 years ago. The blockbusters may have similar budgets and what we're seeing is just the effect of inflation (which is still debatable) but that doesn't change the fact that this current trend of focusing almost entirely on blockbusters is harmful to the film industry. The movie studios need to regain the willingness to task risk on unique low/mid-budget movies.

As someone who likes going to see movies on the big screen, I just think general audiences don't care about that experience because they can save money and wait to watch it in 2 months at home. But it's so many things like budgets, streaming, theater expenses. I saw a video with Tom Hanks where he said "the point of a movie is to have people see it, regardless if it's in the theater or at home." So I can see movies like Fall Guy and Furiosa doing well on streaming but studios want the box office.

I have been a movie devotee from my teens headed into my sixties. I’d go to at least one film a week, often more. I am the guy that makes my friends and family go to the movies. Old friends miss my movie nights after I moved away. And I rarely go to the movies these days. And I pay for the monthly movie pass, around $25 a month! The thought of getting to the theater and dealing with the annoying people on their phones or talking, leads me to just pick something off my streaming sites to just relax and enjoy. I tell myself I’m paying AMC so that should keep them running even if I don’t actually go. lol

High interest rates, grocery prices are still out of control, and inflation in everything else has killed a lot of people’s desire to spend money on non-necessities. There are a ton of industries hurting, no surprise the movie industry is also affected. It just seems that they’re the most out-of-touch with spending and expectations.

Always enjoy Mike's POV and your discussions together. I used to go to the movies a lot. I have a movie membership and have for years, but I paused it for a few months to save money. Dune 2 was the only early release, I was interested in. I'll resume when D&W come out, maybe Bad Boys as well. For the past few years me and a few of my family members have gone as a group primarily for the Marvel movies, but a few other big events like Wonka, Dune,MI, Avatar etc. I typically only pay now for movies that are enhanced by being seen on a big screen.

When I took the wife and kiddo to spiderverse last year we dropped over $100 for seats, tix and food/drinks. In 09 when I was in college it was $7 a ticket. The prices have just gotten too high to go regularly for us at least.

When we know it is a movie we are going to like and ultimately buy on 4k or digital we concluded why spend $40 seeing it in theater and then another $30 to purchase it later when we could just wait a couple of months and buy it ultimately saving ourselves a lot of money in the end. There are some that we do both or just see in the theater but between what we spend on streaming and the cost of going to the theater it's just too hard to see more things there. Ticket prices are up, food prices are up, restaurant's prices are up so what used to be maybe a $50-60 date night back in 2019/2020 is now $100+ and that's just unsustainable for us.

In regard to Furiosa "underperforming" I think that they vastly underestimated the popularity of the Mad Max franchise lol The movies as a whole have always been sort of niche and although Fury Road was a very good movie, I have it up there with Interstellar, Dune, & Endgame for my favorite in-theater experiences I've had all-time, it wasn't some massive Star Wars level event. It did alright in the box office but as a Franchise its not really in the zeitgeist so its not surprising at all to me.

It's such an easy to see combination of things. Everything is stupidly expensive. Hollywood is making big budget remakes, sequels and prequels that are only inspired by a political message over quality story telling. People have extremely low attention spans and prefer acting like they're watching something at home when really they're on their stupid phones the whole time because they want to feel like they're part of something. It's a nightmare for people that enjoy quality film these days or even much of any pop culture and interactions. It's become sad and dire out there. I'm ready to become a matrix human battery now. 😐

Great discussion guys. Nah it can’t save it. Nothing can save the box office except good original content movies. Studios don’t wanna risk doing that cause their writers suck as compared to years past, so new content tends to flop. Unless it comes from a bestselling book (Die Hard, Harry Potter, GOT, Marvel and X-Men comics etc.). The baby boomer aged writers and directors were the gold standard, the creme de la creme. Gen X and Millennials and younger generations just are not as creative, so movies going downhill fast.

Hopeful, but also I didn’t like the sound of that plot synopsis. I do love Travis Knight and wish he had gotten the chance to fully do transformers so we will see. Studios definitely need to reel in those budgets, but I have to disagree with you guys that they shouldn't go back to their pre-Covid release strategy. They have to if they want to make a real profit. Kristian, you even said that renting movies is more expensive on VOD than paying the ticket price and that Fall Guy had a jump in ticket sales when it arrived on VOD. As expensive as tickets are, people don't want to pay more to watch it at home for an even higher price. They'll watch it on streaming, but again, the release window between that and theaters is too small. As far as theaters themselves, they seriously need to come down on the ticket prices, but if people's behavior has gotten worse, then they need to reinstate those little promos they used to have where they went over the ground rules for theater etiquette. That hasn't been a thing for at least a decade now. I also think theaters need to enforce those rules like they used to. You'd think people don't need to be told how to behave at the movies, but apparently they do. My experiences haven't been too bad, but I always go to matinees when people are quieter and more respectful. Everyone thinks they have to go specifically on Friday and Saturday nights with all the assholes, but they don't. There are other options.

I get you guys have high prices where you are but here in the UK I saw Furiosa in IMAX for £10 it would’ve been £5 if I saw it in a regular screen. Also people with families aren’t the only people who go to the theatre. Really don’t think the price issue is the main problem once you leave LA. I know you keep saying Fall Guy is great but I haven’t really heard anyone else say it was anything but fine, Furiosa was just good. Dune on the other hand was amazing and it did well. I really think it’s just down to the quality of the films.

@@johansvensson833 You're being generous. They talk about it breaking even for the studio or being financially successful. The reason the B.O. drops were so low domestically is because the domestic take was very low. In the B.O. the film made most of its money internationally. But theaters get only 40% of that back. This film was a financial bomb . My concern is that we try to reshape reality by spinning the narrative. And I get that these guys may be trying to put an optimistic view on the current B.O., but the reality is that Auaman 2 tanked. If the budget had been kept down then it would have done ok. BUT spending around 300 million is a losing proposition most of the time. Paramount spending 400 million on I.M. maybe why that studio well soon be gone. A reported budget of $215 million with a domestic earning of $124 million and $434 million worldwide. Also that is a huge drop off from the 1st one that made over a billion

No, of course not. No one movie can save a box office year. The difference between Dead pool being a hit or a disappointment is about $200 million domestic. That sum makes no difference one way or another.

I disagree Kristian, theaters don't need MCU they need movies that will bring audience back to watch on repeat. The Marvels did not gross 300 million worldwide, it grossed $206.1 million worldwide. 2023 apart from 3 exceptions was not a good year for comicbook movies. 2024 movie hits are Dune: Part Two $711,768,804 Kung Fu Panda 4 $542,899,574 & Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire $564,933,413 worldwide.

By your reasoning, The Fall Guy should have been a success, but no one went to see it.

@@alexp601 The Fall Guy was never going be a success since no one saw David Leitch previous movie Bullet Train. However people went to see Dune Part 2, Godzilla X Kong The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4. All 3 are non MCU movies.

MCU doesn’t need to be saved. I think that’s an overreaction by a lot ppl. If this is marvel at their lowest then their gonna be around at the top for another 20 years just because we’re still getting top tier projects post endgame 💯

I guess its a cali thing. But in my part of the country people are well behaved in the movies. If someone does do something out theaters they remove them. That's if the crowd didn't handle it 😂😂

I kind of think it’s unfair to lean to Deadpool to save the Summer B.O. Though studios have been relying on Disney to artificially inflate the B.O. for years. I’ll never forget the year Disney and the B.O. hit record heights, but all of the other studios pulled all of their big films that year not wanting to play against Disney. What if they actually released their good films and those made bank too! The record set for the B.O. would have been insane. But no let Disney do all the work. So this year Disney has let the other studios do the work, and the B.O. is called a disaster. I wonder is you removed the Disney gross from each year for ten years how this B.O. would measure up. P.S. I don’t get ‘The Fall Guy’ love it was silly entertainment and nothing special.

I really wonder if social behavior post pandemic changed and shifted people into being more prone and tolerance le to be fine at home and have a much less drive to go out to the theater. Changed human behavior at least now. It may take a decade or two if people return to behavior prepandemic. That doesn't count all the other factors that changes human behavior.

@R17759 Sadly many are now dead. Also where were they then? Theaters were shut down for a long time. As was restaurants. Only out side seating. Etc. Not in a theater. People many got used to staying home especially for consumption of movies. Home theater tech cheaper. He'll recently seen 77 to 80" sales for TVs under 1500 recently. Plus like mentioned pm the show the people who went out plus just the trend of self entitled meant ans self importance in disrespectful entitlement has just created people to act horrible anywhere so in a theater that adds another negative element to people just tired of other people's disruption. Social effects have happened. It is not a maybe it's a how much. Think of and I hate to mention this what is the impact of the ignorance of the growing protest behavior on groups on the fight against the term they can't define that just means Sh$t they don't like. The Hollywood is.....word. I hate saying the word I won't type it either. Pandemic changed the normalcy of being at home for many. I can speak for my self for sure. Concerts Bara, movies, hockey games. All of it I was extrovert. I'm struggling to even leave the house now. When I do being out can be short lived and exausting. I know others. Wonder if there are studies ongoing. Will have to search.

I think Deadpool and Wolverine is going to no only save the MCU, but I think it's going to save the summer Box Office because it has many things going for it with not only Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine it's what everyone has been waiting for having both Deadpool and Wolverine on the big screen together. There was no need to make a Garfield movie no one asked for that movie to be made at all.

I think viewing habits have changed. Studios have to rethink the budgets of their movies. I like the Rock but he is overrated and he has no business showing up late for his job. That's laziness and disrespectful all rolled into one.

The Rock is more important than normal people so his time matters more. Also, he's a big deal and deserves a pi$$ assistant to carry his waste away in bottles. When his career really drops he'll get into politics like other actors, reality stars, wrestlers and influencers have done.

The majority of the general audience don't know about the strikes or delays and don't care about them. They just want good films to go and see. The strikes and delays are the least of the issues with low box office.
