10:30 In Generation I, enemy trainers will only use moves of a type that's super effective against your Pokemon, if they have one. The rival's Exeggcute has Reflect, Hypnosis, Leech Seed, and Stun Spore. The first two are Psychic, which are supposed to be super effective against Poison types. The problem is that those moves don't do damage, but the game doesn't check for that before determining which move to use. You can actually soft lock your game by going into the Lorelei fight with only a low level fighting type Pokemon with Rage by combining this with the fact that enemy Pokemon have infinite pp. Her Dewgong will just use Rest every turn it's awake and heal off the damage done by Rage, which your Pokemon is locked into.

It's not an actual softlock because of the 1/255 glitch meaning you have a chance to miss Rage while still emptying PP. Pikasprey has a pretty good video on that one. I believe the chance of you breaking out of that fight was as likely as encountering 11 shiny pokemon on a row, but there's a chance!

Also because of the faulty AI a low level poison type like Venomoth can easily destroy something like Lance's Dragonite Since Venomoth is half Poison type, Dragonite will only use psychic moves thinking it's effective, which are Agility and Barrier, which are non-damaging moves It'll take a long time sure, but Twitch Plays Pokemon already proved it was possible

if you really want to get locked during the elite four you have to end up with lorelei freezing a fighting or poison type, loose all your other pokemon against agatha so her haunters or gengars will only ever use hypnosis on a frozen pokemon.

The way it works is that if a move is programmed to have a secondary effect where it inflicts status, it won't ever inflict it on a Pokémon of that type. Body Slam for example cannot paralyze normal types. This actually means there are a few interesting interactions with this quirk like Twinneedle being able to poison Poison types, since Twinneedle is the only move that has a secondary effect to poison where the move itself isn't a Poison type move.

Try to beat Pokemon Emerald with only the first 4 moves a Pokemon learns. You can evolve your Pokemon and have a full team of 6. No TM's or HM's on your main team. You can use HM slaves. No egg moves. No duplicate catches. If you catch a wild Pokemon but it doesn't have each of its first four moves, then you have to find heart scales and go to the move tutor in fallarbor town. You may teach covet to a zigzagoon to steal the heart scales from luvdisc Example: If you pick mudkip as your starter you can only use Tackle, Growl, Mud-Slap and Water Gun Mandjtv just uploaded an attempt of this challenge, however I did not copy his idea. I put up this comment about 6 hours before he uploaded.

Because Blue has 'Good' AI, he will always choose the move of the super-effective typing against you if he has one, which in his case, is a psychic-type move, reflect (other 3 are leech seed, stun spore, and poison powder). Only problem is...the game forgets to check if said 'super-effective' move actually does damage, only that the move's "type" is super-effective. This is also why the Kadabra kept using teleport - He has "2" possible super-effective moves, teleport, and confusion.

Fun fact. I checked the code for the game, and the reason Blaine uses a Super Potion on healthy pokemon is because he was programmed the same as someone that uses a stat boosting item. The AI for trainers that heal their pokemon always has a check to see what their health is, and if it's below a certain amount, it will use the item. Blaine's AI does not have this check, so he just uses it. The reason he sometimes DOESN'T use it immediately is because the game rolls a random number to see if the trainer uses their AI or not. It compares the random number to a predetermined number and if it's smaller they actually use their AI, and if it's larger or equal they don't use it. Blaine has about a 70% chance to use his.

Probably because ghost types are so few in this gen, and Pokemon with wrap are also so few. Plus if you're playing normally, you won't find a ghastly till pretty far into the game. I don't think Ekans shows up often after that.

I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that Gen I AI is programmed to always use a move if it has the type effectiveness over any other move it has. So Exeggcute not attacking in the rival battle at Silph was down to it being programmed to only use Reflect and Hypnosis against Ghastly, since it's poison type!

Lol that'd be fun to see. Agatha would be especially hard in that challenge. Ghost types are immune to normal, which is a good chunk of Seedot's movepool. And all Agatha's pokemon are also poison so they resist STAB grass TM moves. Luckily Seedot can learn Shadow Ball with TM (and Dig could help too) but it's still an uphill battle.

I did the math on how good the Confusion luck was on the Misty fight. Confusion lasts for 2 to 5 turns, at random, and is a 50/50 for if the target hurts itself. Confusion triggered 4 times in that battle. The odds of a Pokemon not snapping out of Confusion varies depending on the turn of the Confusion. On turn 2, the odds are 1 in 4, so the odds of it not happening is 3 in 4. On turn 3, the odds are 1 in 3, and so on. Gen 1 has a "strategy" where they always go for the super-effective move against you, because it would typically cause extra damage and the normal thing. Since Gastly is part poison, the Gen 1 AI says to Exeggcute, "use the one psychic move that you know, Reflect, since it's already asleep with the other psychic move, Hypnosis". It could have used either Leech Seed or Stun Spore (although this wouldn't do anything) instead, so it might have also just been the dumb AI lol Sorry if someone already mentioned this to you and I'm just repeating stuff you've heard before! I know people like Pikasprey have used this fact to create some crazy softlocks or near-softlocks in Gen 1. "Edit": It's the same thing as the Agility thing that you mentioned in the Elite 4 (which now that I think about it, means you probably already know this, but I'm typing this comment as the video goes on kinda like your script lol)

I’m sure people have said it, so you know how Gen 1 AI works, but for those who don’t feel like scrolling: The computer player will always select the move in its first move slot that will be super effective against your Pokémon. Hence why the abra/kadabra kept using teleport for awhile. (There’s a glitch that pikasprey exploited with Lorelei’s dewgong and a fighting type - great video!) once the opposing Pokémon levels up and learns more moves, the typically replace the move in the first move slot, so your rivals kadabra’s teleport is the first to go once it learns 5 moves, hence why it wises up and uses confusion/psychic/psybeam

Either MDB or Johnstone himself could do it. But they keep ignoring my suggestion :, ( That run favors strategy over dumb luck or just grinding. A nice variation from the solo 'mon runs. And I don't think it would be nearly as bad as a Magikarp or Wobbufett run, or a Prof. Oak challenge.

It can be a daunting task if you don't plan ahead, but it's really fun since you have to get creative. A proper SUICIDE or near suicide for a challenge is this one in which you have to beat gen l without getting hit. Ever. If you do you you have to start everything over from the BEGINNING. A KZbinr went for it. During the proccess, he started to have nightmares about it. People often say he hasn't been the same ever since then.i don't want to subject John or MDB through that torture. I love these challenges muh-man! Also, about that hypnosis luck... From the perspective of making each individual attempt to see a fail might feel unlucky, and as though it should never happen. It's actually a hint in showing you that av true random outcome occurred. If two groups in a separate room are told to write down heads or tails for 10,000 consecutive odds, but only one group has a coin to come up with the results you'll see these spikes of 8 consecutive fails to let you know it's more likely this set was the one with the coin. I'm the psych of the two groups, the one with the coin doesn't have to think, but will see this occurrence happen, and find it amazing that it happens. Where the group without the coin will likely say ttthhthhtthtthhh I can't put another heads, or it'll seem to ordered.

Yes, definitively! When I played Pokémon Crystal casually 4 years ago, I caught a Ghastly, evolving it into a Haunter. This Pokémon line is super fast, so my strategy usually was Hypnosis, Curse, Dream Eater. Was super fun!
