You’ll often hear it claimed that lobsters are biologically immortal. So is it true? Not really, though this is partially an argument in semantics as you’ll soon see. (And while we’re on the topic of lobster myths, no: Lobsters do not mate for life. In fact, the male lobster pretty much gets it on with every female lobster that comes a knockin’. And they do almost literally line up and knock on the male’s door.)

@@muath1401 all dogs can interbreed with wolves. A girl I know adopted a wolf-dog hybrid (they are really weird and big). dogs and wolves are still basically the same animal. And also just looking at modern birds like the emu and cassowary makes it pretty obvious that raptors did not go extinct. there are genes in normal chickens(as well as all other birds) that go unused for developing teeth. There are even fossils of a raptor called Archaeopteryx that had a raptor head with teeth, no beak, yet had feathers and could fly using its wings it also had a uniquely bird like ankle structure. And there are no known bird fossils that are older than when archaeopteryx lived. Yet there are many more bird like fossils dated after that point. The people who study this stuff don't debat it.

My old skipper always threw the huge lobsters & crabs back, it was a superstitious thing, and he always had this mantra he would pronounce over them as he put them back. Never ever found out what he was muttering. On another note, he never came home empty like other boats occasionally did, never had any accidents either. It was a lucky boat, and he was a good man. I miss those simpler times.

Fun lobster fact! In the past, lobsters were considered disgusting and fed to the poor and dogs. So when the American Revolution came around, the American revolutionists were insulting the British Redcoats by calling them lobsterbacks, which would have been a fairly derogatory name due to the common idea of lobster at the time.

+Kadomex That's mostly all marketing, but also some costs of shipping them live if you live far from the Northeast. You can still buy super fresh lobster for under $6 per pound in New England grocery stores. It was down to $3 per pound two summers ago due to high supply and soft demand. Even cheaper right off the boat. Yet tourists still come up here and overpay 5X for the pleasure of letting someone else toss it into boiling water for them.

In the Museum of Science in Boston, they have on exhibit a giant lobster. I think it's over three feet. I remember seeing it as a kid. My mom wanted to eat it. It was estimated at over a 100 years old. It is estimated that some whales can live as much as two hundred years and that there are whales swimming the oceans today that remember their friends and family members being hunted by New Bedford whalers. It may even be possible that whales that Herman Melville wrote about are still alive. One whale was recently found with a harpoon in it that was manufactured over two hundred years ago that nobody has used for over 150 years

Eventually the lobster would get so big that gravity and the physical limitations of its own chemistry would prevent it from moving and it would die. It's limbs would be too heavy to move. The material of its body would not be sturdy enough to sustain itself. It's limbs would twist and bend under its own weight, then eventually break. From there it would be too heavy and cumbersome to move itself. It'd be a lump of tissue and nerves. You could hardly call it a lobster anymore.

@All Living Things Feel Best Outdoors not lobsters, they have the same nervous system as a fucking ant, and ants cant feel pain because of how small and primitive their nervous system is, both insects and lobsters have the world's worst and oldest nervous system, and this makes sense since lobsters are crustaceans, and everyone with a working, functioning nervous system and brain, inlike lobsters, know crustaceans are related to insects, so no, lobsters can't feel pain, and studies have proven they can't feel pain or are even sentient due to how old, ancient, and non functional their nervous systems are, dont go preaching all animals can feel pain, that simply isnt true, do plants feel pain? No, just because it's living doesnt mean it can feel pain, do jellyfish and bacteria feel pain? No, just because they are animals doesn't mean they can feel pain, the jelly fish is literally a brainless, organless blob floating in the water, and bacteria are literally one of the first organisms to ever exist.

G'day, When I was 3 (1964) my uncle was the first person to Spearfish on South Solitary Island, and I've posted Video of the Photos of the Lobster he brought back, on WOAL...; and I recall seeing it being photographed. One picture shows a 1-Ft long Blackfish, against a Retractable Ruler, the other shows the same Blackfish & the Ruler, *NOSE-TO-TAIL* laid perpendicular between the Lobster's Eye-Stalks..; so it was a Foot accross the Eyeballs. And I still have the original Photographs. While it's Tail was hanging over the bottom of a 7 Foot-Long Door, 2/3 of it's Feelers were overhanging the other end...(!). I make it as being 5 ft from Eyes to Tailfans' Edge.., and I've always thought it must've been 100 years old when Uncle Spencer brought it home for us to eat... There ye go, 'nd now ye know ! ;-p Ciao ! Mind you, the South Pacific Rock Lobster has no Claws, they're a different Species to the ones you

We already have genetic repair machinery. Every single day every cell in your body (about 7 trillion of them) undergoes about 60,000 DNA damage events. That adds up to about 4.2 quintillion DNA damage events. Your cells have specialised enzymes in at least 10 different pathways that fix >99.99999% this damage. We already have telomerase in our cells too, well, specifically in our stem cells and in telomerase-positive cancers (about 85% of all cancers).
