How long does it take you to get out of bed in the morning?
As an ADHDer, getting up can be tough for me... and also really, really unpredictable. Sometimes I'm out of bed in twenty mins to get going on whatever I'm currently obsessing over. At others, if left to my own devices, I can linger in bed for hours even though I'm desperate to start my day.
Here's the kicker: when I can't get out of bed, it's not just my productivity that takes a hit, but my sense of worth too. ADHD paralysis can feel awful at the best of times, but even worse when it means festering in bed for the best part of the morning.
So, finally, I have found a way to get myself out of bed in just a few minutes, and it works (almost) every time.
If you also struggle to rise (as someone with ADHD or any other neurotype), then give this a try tomorrow morning and please let me know how you get on!!
I'm wishing you all the neurosparkly success with this that I can ✨

In programming we call that “rubber ducking” - when you are troubleshooting something or working something out, explain it out loud to someone else, even if they aren’t there. (The person who coined the term had a rubber duck toy in their desk…)

Your sharing of the fundamental difference between language and thought processes - how one is naturally organized and the other chaotic - just helped me realized why I've always been better at making decisions when I speak aloud (usually to another person). WILD. Thank you for these videos 💛 I'll try this trick tomorrow and see if it gets me up!

Guys I’m trying something new that seems to be helping- I set a “It’s okay, you can keep sleeping” alarm 25-30 minutes before I need to wake up which I’m fully allowed to turn off (make sure no snooze!). Then I have a wake-up alarm which I wake up but can stay in bed for 10-15-30 minutes until my “get up” alarm and one more “you should be up by now” and lastly emergency late alarm :) that waking up period can also be extended for creative thought or meditation in bed :) or for this video’s tool! Anyway much love, still figuring this out!

My original Polly Pocket from the early 90s who sits quietly with the rest of my jewelry (she’s the ring version) will now have purpose again - she will now be hearing my steps to get up every morning 😊 Edit: Or my dog will be my co-conspirator. Just started talking to Polly and my pup’s head darted up with a slight tilt, like, “I’m listening, what are we doing next?” Gotta love dogs. 🐕💞

I agree. Good sleep habits (hate the term "sleep hygiene") make a world of difference. That said, I don't find I have to be uber strict about these things. I still use my phone in bed (scrolling and playing games) and as long as I read just before sleep and use this particular trick *before* diving into a reels session in the morning, I'm fine. I mention this because I've tried to ban my phone from bed so many times, thinking I had to, and it's just never stuck. I'm super relieved to find that things like these still work.
@garrettmillard525
@garrettmillard525 4 ай бұрын
Absolutely. However! No matter how you have failed to maintain a perfect routine, you ALWAYS have the opportunity to be kind to yourself in the present. And the kindest thing you can do for yourself after staying up is getting some sun in your eyes, and starting your circadian clock. Thus making it far easier for you to fall asleep when evening comes. Always try to do what will make you feel best not just tomorrow, but when you're falling asleep tonight.

Are you in the UK? Def a lingering person but over a decade older than you and notice needind to take med early or get b)fast , no one to talk to except pets! Yes, I’m in the UK. I wasn’t diagnosed until in my 40s, by which point I was already on thyroid meds that have to be taken alone so unless I take them and then wait 30 mins, I can’t take my ADHD meds. I guess this is why I had to develop this other method :-)

Huh.... while I DO have trouble getting out of bed some mornings, I have a lot MORE trouble these days getting my butt out the door for physical movement purposes - regardless of how much I know I'm going to enjoy it once I'm out there. I *KNOW* that part of this is not having the exec function in the moment to manage all the steps I need to go through to make that happen (get changed, put on sunscreen, sort out the cat & her door... each of which is actually more than one step put together). I'm going to try this technique and see if it works in that context too...

PS: just discovered Betwixt this morning and I'm loving it so far. I pretty much upgraded to the Elder tier as soon as I finished the intro adventure, and it feels likely that I'll upgrade further once I've done a couple more adventures: I really like the idea of being able to sponsor someone else who can't afford a paid membership 🙂
@Betwixt_App
@Betwixt_App Ай бұрын
Oh, that’s such a good idea!! I’m sure it can help there. Building a handy routine for it could also really help (e.g. having a little bag with sunscreen and other movement essentials always right by the door along with your trainers or whatever). I’d also suggest using Mel Robbins’ 5 Second Rule for this - when you notice the “I could get out to do some movement now” thought, start counting from 5 down to 1 and _before_ you get to 1, stand up and just start moving in the direction of the task. It’s so, so much easier to keep going once the momentum is with you. Good luck!

For me as soon as I hear myself start to talk, any train of thought I may have had goes right out the window. However, I've been doing something pretty similar to this via text for ages --- I'll pop into either my partner's or my sib's chat window, start typing a message that says "Okay I am going to ..." and then list out the steps in order. It generally works! And sometimes when I'm on step 8 I realize I forgot step 3 and I can go back and add it in 😂

@Betwixt_App
@Betwixt_App 15 күн бұрын
Just “get up” won’t be enough. You need to list the things you’ll do once up, in order, preferably getting to something that can excite you (like coffee, breakfast a task you love or anything else that might trigger even the tiniest bit of dopamine) at the end. Then, after the last item, you move. I know it sounds too easy to be true, but it works. Give it a go! 😊

Something happened to me and I can get up early and without any issue, even if I stay late. Which is so weird. My son needs to sleep in till noon and I understand him. Once I wake up, I feel the need to get up and do things which end up in office. Then I have to find excuses to delay the start, journaling, planning etc, but lately I would start before 9 and be just fine.

I've been trying to jumpstart my inferior function, which is extroverted Thinking (Te). Te likes to think out loud and use others (or even just the walls) as a sounding board. This...might actually be the key. Maybe indulging my Te will get it working for me and help me self-manage my ADHD. My steps: 1. Sit up 2. Take thyroid meds 3. Swing feet over edge of bed 4. Stand up 5. Put on slippers 6. Go use the bathroom 7. Check to see if the dog wants out 8. Adding a step: Go out and stand on front porch for a few minutes whenever it's sunny and/or breezy 9. Turn on bedroom light or open curtains to wake the snake up (she's started keeping my hours, and it's not good for her, since she's diurnal)

Good question! There are some studies to show that first-person visualisation of future goal-achievement can be counterproductive, so if you do mention yourself, then the 3rd could be a great addition. I tend not to, though. But then again, I don’t mention myself much, either - I just list the steps: “1. Sit up… 2. Take meds…” etc.
