This is a top 10 episode by far. A couple that comes from nothing and make a very modest income. It's a far cry from most who make excellent wages but fritter it away on dumb 'stuff'. They don't whine about buying second hand. Years since he bought any clothes - no haircut for over a year. Even though they rent to own, I understand why they think it's the only way they think they can have simple pleasures. Washer/dryer, TV, I can understand. Furniture, camera is a bit of an indulgence. I love this one because Gail shows a family with modest incomes CAN work. Best of all, they're breaking the generational cycle of poor money management & making _Smart_ money decisions. Good for Dean going to get extra work! I know _Personally_ the long, hard hours working in a restaurant. It's been said many times in comments, but they should teach budgeting in school. It's a life skill, like cooking. (It drives me crazy when I see poverty docs. and they're buying frozen pizza, poor nutritional food, microwave dinners, etc.) I hope Kristy and Dean are doing well 18 years later.❤ It's 2024. (filmed in 2006)

Actually, I grew up dirt poor. Scored scholarships to go to college, grad school and a PhD program. I was a broke student until I was 31. I always saved money. Why? I lived in NYC with no security net. I had to budget well. It's that simple.

I like this couple. It's clear they were completely lost and they really listened when Gail showed them the way out. One thing I'm curious about is that Kristy had $30,000 in student loans, but she worked as a receptionist. Reception work can be very demanding, but you usually don't need a post-secondary education to do it. I wonder what her degree was in?

Sometimes there aren't that many jobs where you live, or there are but they don't accommodate your family life. My first non-seasonal job after college was cleaning kennels at a vet's office--my coworker in this was a high-school dropout who couldn't spell his own name consistently. Granted, I moved up and now work in my field of study, but I don't have kids/family demands and I live near a big city that has a wide variety of jobs. Also: Getting a job is not the sole purpose of an education.
@deborahblackvideoediting8697

@@littleblackcar - Yes, that's true! When I worked at the YWCA, we had an opening for a front-desk worker in the fitness centre. The job required a high-school diploma, but paid decently and had good benefits. We were shocked when we received several dozens resumes from applicants with all types of degrees. Even though we were in a large city, there weren't a lot of jobs at the time. I agree about a job not being the sole purpose of an education. Learning and discovering about something one truly loves leads to all types of growth and is incredibly rewarding...however, it's sure nice to get a paying job afterwards in the field we love! :)

@@deborahblackvideoediting8697 Right now beggars can't be choosers. I am working in a Mailroom at $17.24 Per Hour at 37.5 Hours per week. I still live at Home but I don't have any vices. I don't smoke, drink and I don't go out the way I used to so I save alot. I know if I lived on My own I would have to Moonlight but I budget to the last Dollar. I buy what I "Need" not "Want". I had wanted to go and buy a New Ipod and Keyboard & Guitar to learn to play, but I don't. Also there's nothing wrong with Thrift Shops. I've bought all kinds of Clothes courtesy of My Mom. She buys them, then she shows me how much I owe her and I pay her either right away or on Rent Day. Then when we go to Costco, she buys the stuff then she gives me the Receipt, I calculate what I wanted to get then I pay her back in a reimbursement. My Father is dead so I've really had to step up. She also knows how trustworthy I am to pay on certain days, etc.

Being creative and making do is so important! I didn’t have a tv when I was a young adult-then the neighbor put his out by the dumpster…tv….check! A pair of rabbit ears and I could watch fuzzy tv. Walking around town was usually better reception and also zero electricity. When I got married he wanted to drink soda…we couldn’t eat and have soda on our income, so soda became a treat…which it should be. Even as a comfortably housed mature person, I can’t fathom buying furniture at full cost-everything but the mattresses are second hand. Table, leather couches, etc. we have some pretty nice prices too! Rockers like mine are going for $500 on eBay, and I paid $50.

Take a piece of paper and write down your pyramid (things you need to live) 1) Rent/mortgage 2) Food 3) utilities (electric, water, etc.) Subtract that from your monthly net take home. Then pay yourself the rest until you get to 2,000 Calculate how much you have left to get to 2,000 in your savings. Once that is done stop saving and… Take your smallest debt divide by 6 or 12 that amount you pay every month from the remaining balance of your income. Take the rest and pay the other bills. Once the smallest is paid off add the amount you were paying to the next smallest and repeat. Hope this helps.

@laminage
@laminage 6 ай бұрын
It's not as uncommon as you think. You get the Bill in The Mail, then it's shredded out. You know when the Bill is due but it's more important to buy something else. You "forget" that you owe a certian or you forget the Bank debits a certain amount each month. At the end of the month, Bank Service Charges are debited, as well as my Car Insurance. I helped my Mother out with House Insurance which is paid off for 2024, but I still help her with the House Tax, Lawn Mowing Service, and Lawn Services to keep away the pesticides etc. My Dad died 11 years ago so I've had to step up. I told My Cousin about what I have paid out and he said "Who owns the house, you or your mother!" He can't handle that sort of stress of helping family out.

Should be able to get a practical haircut. Nothing wrong with thrift stores.

I started cutting my own hair years ago. It's short and curly so it's easy to cut and hard to mess up. I had always gone to a hairdresser but started cutting back on expenses and the hair cut went. I stopped going shopping except for food. I stopped eating meat so I save money there. ( Meat makes my joints hurt). I make a wish list now and it's fun doing it but I don't buy the stuff on my list. Usually the things on my wish list come my way for free or next to nothing . It's as if God sends them to me. It's exhilarating when that happens. Way better than just buying it. So I practice patience.

They earn 60K, which was a lot of money back then. When this was filmed in the '00s, They earned the 2022 average for a four-person family in the US. I'm not seeing the poverty.

@@rlast4698 for sure. Most of those professions start low till you learn the trade. It was the same when I started teaching. Shame they don't start at a higher wage. But he worked his way up. Much respect for them both

@@tarat26Alot of folks start at the bottom and work their way up. David Geffen started out in The Mailroom at William Morris in the 1960's, and is now one of the most powerful moguls in Showbusiness. Were it not for him, Dreamgirls & Cats may not have mae it to Broadway.
