Both languages sound completely different, this isn't a challenge. However, give her written Spanish and written Portuguese and see if she distinguishes it then, that's a harder challenge. I'm from Spain and many times it takes me a few words to realize I'm reading Portuguese and not Spanish.

Really!? Do Portuguese speakers ignore accents in informal writing/casual chats? Because that's what gives it away for me usually - ã, á, à, ê, ç. I know it's Portuguese once I see these accents on words.

@@czas4 Well, in extremely informal writting like when you're texting your friend you kinda can ignore them. I don't recommend doing it in 100% of the time because some accents really change the letter's sound and you can't just ignore them.

@@czas4 , it's not everyone who writes without accents. Those people are not well educated because they didn't have the opportunity to get good education. They work in places where writing is important. But it's my impression. Those who need to write well use the accents. I'm a teacher and requires my students to write well so that everyone understands them.

The brazilian accent is more similar to latin american spanish accents, so it is hard to distinguish them. This is because the portuguese language in Brazil changed A LOT due to native american languages and influence of african languages as well. Some indigenous languages like tupi make that sound of "open" vowels as well. (Which makes it even more similar to spanish) Brazilians say "BraziU" due to that influence of tupi and other languages.

Wrong. Portuguese from Portugal changed a lot, much more than the Brazilian one. A common misconception.
@Anonymous-py1sf
@Anonymous-py1sf Жыл бұрын
@@naubersm It is not a misconception. Portugal was much more isolated while Brazil was a mix of different people who had different mother tongues. The indigenous and african languages gave the brazilian portuguese accent many sounds... look, I see you are brazilian but the reality does not have to hurt you. Embrace your identity and study a little about non-european languages, you will eventually understand what I mean. There is nothing "pure" about the language spoken in Brazil.

In fact, European Portuguese is more similar to Spanish, I heard this from a Spaniard because they use tu with the right conjugation and have a closer vocabulary because they have a lenicao of D B G a soft sound that does not exist in Brazilian Portuguese spoken slowly is easier for a Hispanic to understand than a Brazilian who changes consonant sounds much more
@Anonymous-py1sf
@Anonymous-py1sf 9 ай бұрын
@@wandersonteixeirabraga7729 You are talking about written languages, not accent. European portuguese does not sound like spanish at all. For example, if someone from Portugal goes to a foreigner country and speak out loud, people will think it sounds more like russian or polish. Someone from Brazil can be mistaken by hispanic (I mean someone who speaks latin american spanish). Foreigners only confuse european portuguese and spanish when it is written, not spoken. And yes, brazilian portuguese is much more like spanish in general (also including Spain) especially because of the open vowels (example: the letter "a" is ALWAYS an open "a"). Tbh, the thing that confuses me is how the "l" in "Brazil" is gone and the word becomes "Braziw" or something like that. It is probably because the indigenous languages that had more relevance to the brazilian portuguese language did not have that sound. I know at least 1 does not have the "l".
