Amongst many others this short film missed the original historic home of golf during its piece on St Andrews history, the equally scenic Borders area with beautiful small towns from Peebles down through Selkirk and Hawick. Also missing was the many towns on our Ayrshire coast and the stunning Ailsa Craig, along with the peninsulas of Cowal to Kintyre in Argyll and the West Highland way hiking route and train line from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig often rating among the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. The smaller islands of Barra, Islay ,Iona and many more of the south west and the larger Northwestern Islands of Lewis and Harris are also of historic importance as are the far northern islands of the Shetlands whose historic importance for Scottish/Nordic connections through the Viking settlements beginning over a millennium ago. There are far too many to list in such a short film and for anyone planning to visit Scotland the only possible reason not to would be the weather which is temperamental too say the least.

If you’ve ever watched the tv show Outlander then you’ll see the stone circle. In the outlander tv show the stones send a english world war two nurse back in time to before the jacobite uprising in 1746 just by touching them. These stones were for rituals. The Eilean Donan was also used in the tv show outlander. Take care 😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@pi1872 I agree 100% about Outlander show it’s great. I come from Airdrie which is a small former coal mining town just outside Glasgow and an hour away from Edinburgh. Hopefully you’ll visit someday and see for yourself. I recommend the Highlands. You can go inside the Wallace monument (Braveheart) right up to the top and on display is Wallace’s sword. It was built to store a part of his body after he was hung, drawn and quartered by the english and parts of his body were sent all over the UK as a warning to us Scots but we didn’t listen and we defeated the english during the battle at bannockburn in 1314 led by Robert the Bruce. The isle of Skye is amazing you’ll find yourself falling in love with. the fairy pools. take care 😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I always enjoy folks ‘reacting’ to vids of my country. Tis good to observe another’s reaction. Alas this vid you are reacting too, whilst showing a few of the gazillion highlights to enjoy, was very poor at describing even what they were showing, they missed so much more than they commented on. Orkney for example, the ‘buried’ looking houses you briefly observed is called Skara Brae which dates back thousands of years. Orkney, as a Scot is a place I love to visit, you can hardly throw a stone but you bump i to an archeological dig. I.E. it has been postulated by archaeologists that the ‘Stone Circles’ were started first in Orkney, then folks moved on and eventually Stonehenge which it’s argued also had Irish influences on it also. It may have been mentioned already; but countless movies are filmed here all year round, Just recently I watched the latest Marvel movie, as I watched, had to double blink! Rewind I had no idea much of it was filmed in Glasgow, along with countless others. I best stop here, just let me assure you dude, if you ever decide to take a trip to discover your family’s heritage, you won’t be disappointed . NB, Scotland has thousands of lochs. Happy to sub, look forward to checking out your other uploads. Be well my friend

@@pi1872 oh!! On the Skara Brae thingy, as you look down into each dwelling (can’t quite remember how long the shot of it is) so, yeah as you look down each house has its what’s called ‘a dresser’ when you look you can clearly see the mantelpiece etc, which it’s thought was used to display family treasures also each home has its built in beds. All made of stone, ergo plain to see, the beds were likely filled with furs straw etc.. Skara Brae itself, this cluster of Neolithic habitations lay undiscovered for centuries only ‘fairly recently’ relatively speaking when a huge storm uncovered that which lay hidden under the sand dunes for millennia. There’s a hugely respected Scottish archaeologist who has made many docs of the Shetlands and much further afield. (🙄whenever his name comes to mind I shill make a comment lest you fancy looking up some of his work around Myriad Scottish islands (we have thousands lol) There is also a huge Totem Pole somewhere on the islands and the renown ‘Polish Chapel’ which was made by prisoners of war out of an donated Nissan hut and finely decorated inside, check it out on Google Tis worth it. More so I guess if you are catholic persuaded. But regardless Tis an example of fine tramp/folk artwork. A couple exprisoners returned not so long ago 23:47 to complete some refurbishment and were treated like local celebs lol I best stop here dude, but I shall close with this; Please do not ever listen to those rabbis folks who witter non stop about Scottish Independence, as we say (or as many do) Nats vie ye a sare heid 🤣. But to each their own Again dude I appreciate you checking g out ‘the old country’ 🤔

If you want castles, there are more castles in Wales than any other country in Europe per square mile, Edward the first of England built or re-built many. My favourite is Conwy castle, but there are many.

This video doesnt do any of these places justice. Narration was worse ive heard and omitted to say that Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and the castle is built on an extinct volcano. I could go on but if you do your own research. Listen to Bruce Fumey a Scottish historian who tells a fantastic story of our history. I hope you do make the trip someday and see the beauty for yourself ❤

As a Scotsman, I can tell you, there weren't even close. Driving through Scotland, is like driving through a fairytale. Outside of the major cities, everywhere in this country, is like a view from a postcard, and i mean everywhere. If you ever come to visit, you will see what i mean, you will be stopping the car every half mile to get out, and just gawp in splendour, at the brooding landscape. Make sure you visit, you have Scottish blood in you, and we always welcome our long lost ancestors. Slainte.

The standing stones in Orkney are the Stones of Stenness, older than Stonehenge, there's also The Ring of Brodgar, and the excavation that you thought were foundations are the settlement at Skara Brae. Disappointing that these weren't explained, just as they never mentioned golf whilst at St Andrews. Geographics has a good video about Skara Brae. Be well 🍻

On Orkney, The Ring Of Brodgar is around 4500 years old, the nearby Ring of Stennes is about 5100 years old. It's crazy that some of these structures were being put up on cold wet far flung Isles at the same time the Egyptian were erecting thier monuments. Skara Brae is stone age settlement that was only discovered about 120 years ago after a bad storm blew a sand dune back uncovering several stone habitations that were incredible in showing what their inhabitants were capable of doing with stone and how comfortable they made their homes.

Scotland has a lot of Scotland to see with a very low population, the one issue is temperature, _Scotland is not located within the Arctic Circle. However, it is the world’s northernmost non-Arctic nation. The Shetland Archipelago is the closest part of Scotland to the Arctic Circle, being approximately 400 miles south of the Arctic Circle_

It's a pity they didn't explain more. To add to what another commenter has said, the great Megalithic monuments of the UK and the Republic of Ireland - of which Stonehenge is only one - date back to the period 3500 - 1500 BC, so they are often older than the Pyramids. Orkney, the group of islands shown, was one of the great concentrations of these monuments. What you thought were foundations is Skara Brae. Sand dunes covered a small Neolithic village - you're talking 2000 BC or so. Because there was little wood up there, the people's ordinary houses - with beds, etc! - were made out of stone, and so have been perfectly preserved. But not only is there a massive chambered tomb nearby - with Viking graffitt, if I remember, they have recently discovered a huge temple complex. It is now accepted that whoever built these structures had a considerable knowledge of astronomy, and they often show alignments to heavenly bodies. The golf course shown at St Andrew's is of course that of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the oldest in the world.
