Hi there!
Let's learn Cantonese by looking at the mid-rising (2nd), low falling (4th) and low tone (6th) of the word "faan".
This is the follow up to the first video where we looked at different combinations using the high tone "fāan". You can see that video here:
• Cantonese Tone Practic...
This is also the first video where I have taken off YT advertising at the beginning, middle and end of the video in favour of taking a few seconds to share my book ROLL With it! which you can check out at www.justroll.co.
I hope you enjoy the video and if you do, please like the video and subscribe to my channel with notifications turned on.
Happy learning!
Sue Marguerite
PS. Follow me on IG and FB: @cantonesecorner
PPS. Learn more Cantonese with me and open new windows into Cantonese culture by taking my Traditional Characters in Cantonese Pronunciation courses over at www.cantolingo.com.
Learn traditional Standard Written Chinese characters, their Cantonese equivalent (if any), the radicals, proper stroke order, and much more! Classes are on-going and combine online self-study with Zoom sessions. This is a university-level course based on materials from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is effective and fun!

Hello!! Did you notice I took off the YT video ads in favour of taking a few moments to share my book “ROLL with It”? Let me know what you think of this! Was a bit nervous to make the change but hope you find the switch acceptable (I hate the YT video ads - they are hóu màh fàahn!!) and will check it out (after watching the video of course!). Happy learning! ⭐️

Hi Sue! Did you mention that you are looking for a 5th tone for the "faan" word? I'm not sure, but how about this one: 氾濫 (fan5 lam6)?
@CantoneseCorner
@CantoneseCorner 3 жыл бұрын
@@kclee1 Interesting!! My dictionary has fan 氾 as being the third tone (Yale = faan) so faan3 lam6 (Yale = faan laahm) (English: to overflow, spread far and wide). Strangely, Cantonese Sheik doesn't have this character listed anywhere, at all! I'm now intrigued and will ask my native speaker friends and see what they say about the pronunciation. Thanks for asking and stay tuned!

Your pronunciation is even better than some native Cantonese speakers. OMG. Just would like to point out the Chinese characters “rice” 「飯」, bear in mind if the character 「食」acts as the component of a Chinese Character on the left handed side, there is only one “dot” left on the bottom of 「食」。

Hi Sue, I love to hear you speaking Cantonese. In the recent interview, You mentioned the teaching class in Hong-Kong was using piano to teach Cantonese? it was actually a small game I play with myself to translate all the Cantonese phrase into "melody" and I thought it was a very good way to explain to foreigners the Cantonese tone if he doesn't know the formal Cantonese phonetics. do you think so as a foreigner?
@CantoneseCorner
@CantoneseCorner 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that's a great idea and would definitely make more sense to those more musically inclined. It was only a small part of our lesson way back when, but it really did stand out. I also think it's so interesting how Cantopop lyrics are often constrained because of the tones. I'd love to study that more, if I had time and not a bajillion other interests. :)

Do you think in Cantonese or English ? I'm curious.
@CantoneseCorner
@CantoneseCorner 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think, LOL :-) But seriously .... if you mean before I speak, then yes, I don't think about what I'm going to say before I say it, whether in English or in Cantonese. I'm too impatient haha But if I'm just sitting around thinking about things, then definitely in English. I'm going to start noticing though and see if there really is ever a time in Cantonese ... but I really don't think so. Interesting question -- thanks for asking!

@@CantoneseCorner I didn't mean think before speaking. I just mean think in general, like what am I going to have for dinner or how do I plan my future, etc. In Cantonese or English? Personally, I think in Cantonese when I'm in a Cantonese environment & English in an English environment. And you?

@CantoneseCorner
@CantoneseCorner 3 жыл бұрын
OMG Yes!! Thank you so much for adding this ... I think that's a much better description. But interestingly enough, when I put "glare" into Cantonese Sheik, it gives me 強光 or kèuhng gwōng, which literally translated would be like "strong light" if I'm not mistaken. Interesting!
@jarethozb07
@jarethozb07 3 жыл бұрын
@@CantoneseCorner I'm probably wrong here but I think 強光 is specifically light from a source, so when you're in a car and you can't see you pull down the (Can't remember what that things called) "mirror thing" or you can't see down the road and have to squint because it is the same direction as the sun, where as 反光 is reflected light from a lake or window etc, So for example I couldn't see into the store because of 反光 on the window. I'm sure there is another English word for the distortion of light on reflective surfaces but I can't think of it, or I could be wrong and there isn't one and that's why I can't think of it.
