Something that happened to me years ago - my premium jumped up one year and I shopped around for a better deal. When I phoned up my original insurance company to stop the renewal they asked why and I told them I'd found a better deal. They instantly chopped a huge chunk off the renewal quote they'd given me. After that, every year I phoned them up when they sent their renewal notice and asked them to reduce the renewal quote and every year they gave me a better quote.

I had something similar with Halifax/bank of Scotland They used to offer something ridiculous like a 20-30% discount for new customers. but they don't tell you that until you call up and ask why your renewal is so high. Went elsewhere and went back the year after. Then the 2nd time they took the vastly inflated auto renewal even though I'd told them not to. plus had to make a claim in the 2nd year and the company they resold for at the time were an absolute ball ache to deal with.

We bought a 2nd car a EV for local journeys.. I went online and found I could get it for about £450 on a comparison site. Churchill my provider had a message that said to call us for a better car discount for multicar insurance. When I did that after chatting with a rep the EV insurance was about £1200 so I just laught and told them it was cheaper online. So they said they would see what they could do. Minutes later we are down to £450. the only difference was this car did not allow me to drive other cars (which was not a problem as the 1st car did) and there was no fuel protection in case I filled up my car incorrectly... Very difficult as it was a EV. Insurance companies are just legal scammers.

@@theclotshotdidit3115 Done a bit of research and it seems insurance companies don't care. Since a ICE car is 20 times more likely to catch fire, if they do change it because I have a EV it will most probably be to lower the cost....LOL. Last year (2020/21), my insurer tried to triple my insurance, from £300-odd to just over £1000; trying to phone them got "Computer says no", and "the best we can do is £940". Went to a comparison site, filled in all the details - and got the exact same cover for £340. Many insurers are RELYING on people being too lazy to shop around.

In January, a car driven by a person who "had drink taken" collided with my house causing much damage to the front. I'm still sorting it out, but last month, the house insurance renewal dropped on the mat. Last year £250. This year £518. I complained because I was not drunk and had not steered the house into the car - it wasn't my fault!. Shopped around, quotes came back up to £1000. None cheaper than the current provider.

Happened to me also, was close to renewal so i had to stay. Car insurance tripled, trying to explain i was not in the car it was on my drive as bricks went flying. nope. Home insurance tripled also then struggled to get any. All because a drunk driver 70 mph in a 30 mph zone hit my wall, managed to throw 2ft square pillars 100ft. guess what they just got a fine and were driving again within a week. so how could they afford insurance? As an innocent party my insurance company did not chase just chose to screw me. so now i go for the cheapest to tick a box and save the rest as they are no help.

I’ve been watching a lot of car salvage rebuild videos lately. It’s obviously true what you say about insurance companies writing off vehicles too easily judging by a lot of the newer vehicles I see on such videos. It’s also amazing how technical even relatively cheap vehicles are becoming now especially regarding multiple sensors and computer modules.Anyways it makes for interesting viewing, (even if it causes higher insurance premiums 😢). Salvage rebuilds uk is a great channel for such content.

Close, when petrol or diesel cars are damaged they are fine parked next to each other. When an EV gets damaged, it needs a 15 metres exclusion zone incase it catches fire and explodes. The amount of EV's exploding, sinking cargo ships, burning down airport carparks etc it's to be expected. I never saw them using insurance to do it, tbf, I have been hearing a lot about insurance companies asking if you own a lithium bomb, and if they charge it overnight. Biggest pain when comparing insurance of any kind is all the companies have different terms for virtually the same things. If they all got together and agreed on a list of names and terms for their products all we'd have to do is tick a few boxes instead of faffing about trying to read all the # * + ^ small print. Added extras are fine but just keep the basics the same.

Another tip. Get quotes on the day that you receive your renewal letter... you can come back to those quotes up to a week later on most occasions. The closer you get to your renewal date, the more urgent your need to get covered. Insurance companies know this and start to increase the premiums as you get closer to your renewal date. It pays to be organised.

another tip - if you have very long years no claims (i had 19 years) the renewal tends to only say "9 or over" or something like that. i put in the actual number of years i had not claimed for when using comparison sites. it got me better quotes. i rang up the company to double check what i did was ok. told them my renewal just says "9 or more" and they said that's ok our system can see that you've had 19 claim free years so you get this price. words to that effect anyway. really weird that the renewal quotes can only count up to 9. silly system.

Regarding buying insurance for a new driver or learner: I learnt to drive at 17 two years ago. Learner driver insurance isn't too bad, but young driver insurance is. Because my parents let me use their city runabout, I have Marmalade's pay as you go black box insurance. It's an additional policy to theirs, and they're not affected if I crash. I paid £200 up front for the first 500 miles, and about 20p per mile after that. Because I don't drive much, this has been much cheaper (the breakeven point was about 4000 miles, and I only drive socially). The black box score can reduce the per mile rate too if you're happy to go around corners slowly. Would highly recommend!!

My insurance was £440 last year and I'm now getting the cheapest of £1200. No claims or anything. As much as an insurance company is there to make money, anything that you legally have to have to use should be governed more strictly. MOT's for example have a maximum test price limit. Obviously everyone's circumstances are different and should reflect that, but an affordable premium still should be available. 3rd party only often is about the same price as fully comp, so offers no real incentive to go with it, yet that is the basic legal cover you need. However if 3rd party was cheaper, I believe more drivers would drive more sensibly knowing full well if they cause an accident they have no cover for their vehicle.

It's almost as if there's some cartel conspiracy going on 🤔 By the way, legal cover can be very useful. I had a raised manhole in roadworks wipe out my sump. The council blamed their subcontractor and they blamed their sub contractor. After months of my legal cover solicitors chasing it eventually went to court. My defence team were there along with one from the council and each of the two sub contractors. They all blamed each other and me. The judge found in my favour from the video evidence I supplied of other cars clouting the manhole and my repairs were paid in full. That would have been a nightmare to sort out on my own and I was so glad for the legal cover to do the donkey work and chasing.

Mine jumped from around £260/year on my previous car (a Suzuki Swift) to around £640/year on my new Nissan Leaf, which I bought in May this year, even though it was the cheapest I can find. Though the increase wasn't helped by the fact I had to claim for a rear-end I've had last year in my old car, which wasn't my fault; it was when I was pulling in to let an ambulance in the opposite direction take the corner at high speed, and despite signalling that I was pulling in, the driver slammed his brakes too late and hit me from behind. I've had 8 years NCBs, been driving since 2008 (I'm 32), and never had any run-ins with the law at all. The issue is that insurance in the UK has become grossly inflated compared to on the Continent, and even though there are challenges there as well, it's nothing compared to the situation we have. Ironically, I got my renewal quote from a subsidiary of AXA, a French insurance giant.

The damage wasn't all that bad either the other car only caught the front end as I was just about to pull out of a junction and still drove with no errors on the dsplay and no airbags went off. Just not looking forward to my insurance renewal now though it was previously about £800 and getting quotes now for roughly 20 days time is showing around £2500 but that could change as its not due for actual renewal until mid december.

They had a segment on car insurance increases on BBC Breakfast a couple of days ago. They said renewals for petrol/diesel cars had gone up by 15-20% on average, while electric cars had gone up by 70%. The reason they claimed was that repairs on electric cars are generally far more expensive. Whilst there are a few things that can be very expensive, there are many less things that can go wrong with electric cars and the few things that are expensive very rarely go wrong, so this seems like a somewhat illegitimate reason for such a price hike. My renewal was in July and it hadn't increased that much over the previous year, but another thing to consider is that the value of used electric cars has plummeted over the past 18 months, which should reduce premiums or counteract some of the increase at least.

Don't have an EV, but my renewal just came up and went from 180 quid fully comp, protected NCB etc to 280 quid. The wife went from 160 quid to almost 400 (albeit she got rid of her 2006 Focus 1.6 for a 2012 Focus 1.6). The usual shopping around got me down to about 200 quid (after 45 cashback using Quidco Compare - won't get that for about 6 months though) and the wife was also around 200 quid after cashback. It's the same almost every year. Apparently insurers claim increased costs of labour and parts. I'm sure there has been some increase, everything has after all, but it just feels like gouging at this point when you can shop around and get it for less.

Same in Australia, house, contents & vehicle insurance have all massively jumped in Premium and have reduced coverage and slowed claims for payment. The companies have also refused to cover houses in potential bushfire areas, also potential flood areas can no longer obtain insurance unless assessed with many being rejected and the remaining facing monsterous premiums....in some flood areas the government is buying homes at rediculisly low prices.

We have a multicar policy for our family which seems to work out best value (4 cars, 4 drivers, 2 addresses) but they simply refused to add a temporary driver because the time ran across the renewal period (I had already agreed to renew). Instead we had to get a 3rd party cover for this friend who was house sitting and needed the use of the car and they charged £150 for 10 days, I was expecting £20 or similar but I have always done it through the main policy in the past. That's probably more than the value of the car in this case but I guess it's the 3rd party liabilities that cost £££.

I assume that your referring to an electric car? There have been a lot of news articles/videos recently indicating that the insurance industry seems to be pricing EVs out of the market. As an example, a guy with a Tesla reported that his insurer (John Lewis) refused to renew his cover, and he was forced to pay £5k instead of £2k to get cover elsewhere. If that trend is true and continued, it will kill the move to EVs off before its gets started. I believe that apart from the reasons you mentioned, the claimed trend to write off accident damaged cars because the battery safety can't be easily assured is one reason, not to mention the shortage of scrap/repair yards where a suspect car can be stored 15 metres away from other vehicles (as recommended by gov.uk). Another was that Tesla cars weren't build with ease of repair in mind, and that there is a shortage of engineers qualified to repair on high voltage systems, the need for bespoke test equipment unique to each manufacturer and so on. All in all looks pretty gloomy.

Exactly - Tesla started this with not allowing salvage cars to DC charge (they disabled it over the air) - the problem was it wasn't only to their supercharger network, it was to any DC rapid charger, which has resulted in zero resale values for salvage EV's (plus all the above), but importantly inflated values for cat B cars (which only licenced breakers could purchase) - it will resolve (maybe - banks overdraft still at 40% fee, Electric companies etc. (Octopus aside)) hopefully - its all down to poor / weak regulation.

No that is wrong. Tesla provide cut outs and parts for the giga casting and if you bend the frame in any car it is expensive. The main issue with tesla is the cars are aluminium which is difficult to weld, and aluminium cars are more expensive to insure. The worst is carbon fibre as it cannot be repaired.

My insurance is up 38% this year, for a regular diesel car. EVs present different hazards and risks which are starting to become apparent to insurance companies and they are increasing premiums to cover these risks. The main one, of course, is the battery fire risk and the liability for consequential damages which may far exceed loss of the vehicle itself. There is also the additional cost of storing EVs awaiting repair and appraisal (15m cordon) around them, and lack of parts to repair them meaning the costs of providing a courtesy car goes up. The biggest thing car makers can do is to make replacement batteries at a much lower cost, maybe 20% of current prices, and then insurance companies can insist on batteries being replaced rather than writing off the vehicle because the battery cost makes it unecononic to repair.

Another excellent video, full of good suggestions as to how a driver should go about getting the best deal they can on their car insurance. Your point about insurers costs having gone up is valid but I'm pretty sure some companies are using this as a convenient excuse to hike their prices and improve their profits. I renewed the insurance on my 2021 Hyundai Kona EV in May and the renewal quote had gone up, but only by about 5%. From an insurance point of view my age and accumulated no-claims discount helps keep the costs down. When I added my wife, who is the same age as me, to the policy it lowered the quote by just over 5%, so in fact it has reduced! 🙂 As you say, it's essential to shop around and always remember the Latin phrase; "caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware)

My old Landy cost me £280 fully comp this year. My total running costs, including MOT, insurance, tax, service and fuel, are about £1300 a year (and one big bill of £900 in 2014). I've had the car for 10 years so I reckon that the total purchase price plus running costs has exceeded the current value of the car by about £5,000. I think that's very cheap private motoring. Even if the car was now worth nothing, it's still cheap private motoring.

Include Road Traffic Act insurance in the MoT, so with owner's permission, anyone one can drive any car any time. This will make fully comp insurance far cheaper. However, the smart money will take the last owner route. Namely, when expensive repairs/servicing fall due, you scrap and replace. You're welcome. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
