this is how cars should be reviewed, driven on the edge to find their strengths and weaknesses. Very interesting to see that washy-ness in the front end of the Yaris. LSD will make a big difference hopefully and bring it back into line. My biggest gripe with the Sti is when you're leaning on the car in a corner grabbing third gear cleanly is a bit of a struggle. For track performance I'd go with the lighter car. Suspension and tires are relatively basic upgrades, weightloss upgrades tend to either be expensive or require ergonomic compromises like buying carbon/titanium parts or removing creature comforts like sound deadening.
@CarAudioObsessions3 жыл бұрын
The yaris has almost as much power and 300 lbs less. Also the engine will likely last longer than that archaic heap EJ25
Tires aren't even an upgrade, they're a consumable. Testing cars with different tires when the same tire is available is lazy bullshit.

What do you mean by Rally package on the Subaru? And why shouldn't the GR Yaris complete with the STI? It has a better power to weight ratio and it's 6 years newer and the Impreza was still quicker.
@sunrisesunset17343 жыл бұрын
@@wasdwasdwwasd Sorry, I didn't think I needed to bother to check to see if the WRX STI tag on the car actually meant something. Furthermore, the GR Yaris has a 3 cylinder engine and is not even in the same class as this Subaru. Do you think power to weight means something when the other car has more engine cylinders? Wake up.

you mean The GR Rallye? I think Subaru has a Track model up from the STI also.?. I think this was a great and fair apprasal and got down to a "single run", what would best out of three have looked like? and also looking at the wheel cam, there were a few millisecond hiccups with GR. Thats why you have a comparison, if STI handles better it will be reflected in the times.

@@chrisatkinson7431 Hi Chris. Good piloting here. I had a question on your preferred diff settings for play driving. I know you were trying to set a fast time here, but I’d love to hear what settings would you recommend for sliding around on tarmac. Such as linking slides, donuts, etc. For donuts, I have found that "Auto-" works well because the diff is more open initially to help the car kick out but then locks up to help pull the front end around after you break traction. For drifting, I've been using full open or 1click up. (Dry tarmac). Stock power and sticky tires. If it's wet or slick I tighten up the diff more. I'd love to hear what you use! Cheers

Chris, thanks for the demo of how to drive these cars how they've been built for. I'm a big Subaru fan since late 90's - early 2000, big Subaru WRT fan up until Subaru withdraw from WRC. I have had a few of them, Impreza WRX and WRX STi but now being a recent GR Yaris owner ("Track Pack" in France = "Rallye Edition" in Oz with the two LSD) I must say that I feel the Yaris to be equivalent to the Subaru (especially the 2007 STi), even maybe a little more nimble through the left-right or right-left tighter corners. The 2012 STi I had felt heavier and clumsier even though it had Suretrac diffs. Let's see the same comparison with the GR Yaris "Rallye Edition" ! Thanks again !

The car really comes alive with that work done with a few subtle pops and bang theatrics in the higher boost S# setting as well. Otherwise it’s great just to cruise in and sit back and enjoy the rumble, old school :-)

Thanks Philip, the track was a little greasy and had a bit of dirt down in places, so it just kept the car a bit more in balance. Normally you would run them open, but it actually was quicker in this case with it locked, and I tried both. But I wouldn't drive around normally with it locked!

I'm surprised most people even knows what the settings do. 😅 My sti friends that own them don't even have pro tunes but ots after they spent 10 k on parts.

Did not know, Atko had a YT acct. Just subbed, as I've been a fan since his days with Subaru WRC along side Petter.. Great work on these two different but yet so similar vehicles, Chris..

Most magazines and journalists have been killing STI for a long time, but fortunately a man with balls came to put things in order for the much-appreciated GR. Even the-TYPE-R is faster on the track. Only a driver like him Chris Atkinston can have true knowledge.

Thanks for the feedback mate, most people don't know how to get the most out of an STI and just overdrive them.

I raised an eyebrow when he said he was in full lock in the Diff setting. I spat my cereal when i saw the dash. Holy! Imagine if you had a different driver for both cars and the STI not forcing the wheels to move at the same speed, the lap times would be very different! Please do this comparison again!
@chrisatkinson74313 жыл бұрын
I have raced plenty of AWD cars on tarmac, with no centre diff, i.e. completely locked, unlike this, mostly in the World Rally Championship, and they worked just fine. Happy to hear you're explanation, but I tried all the settings in the conditions we had on the day, and that was the one we got the best time in.
@Mrluvshack3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisatkinson7431 For sure Chris! I meant no disrespect or questioning your incredible expertise, I just thought it might have been a limitation with the tires as full lock will force all 4 wheels to move at the same speed. Therefore you are forcing particularly the outer wheels during a corner to scrub in order to rotate to the same degree as the inner wheels. In smaller tracks like Canaan Motor Club in the NH where it is a more technical track, I personally noticed my STI's moving faster and cleaner at the Auto - or two/three notches away from lock in the DCCD system. I'm still a bit shell shocked that you personally responded, as I am a big fan of yours and all you have done, especially for the Subaru Rally Team. Keep wowing us, and keep making us more informed drivers, and I look forward to your next big ventures!
@chrisatkinson74313 жыл бұрын
@@Mrluvshack No problem mate! So locking the DCCD is only locking front to back and you can still have separation side to side, across the front and rear separately. I actually went fully open to start as that is what I would normally expect to be quickest on faster tarmac, I also tried the auto as that is normally pretty good as well. But due to the lower grip on the day and the amount of corners that needed good traction on exit, I was able to gain more speed on the exit with it locked, relative to the loss on entry and mid corner. Exit is always king. Don't be afraid to experiment, I had the space and lack of grip to be able to make it work. But it won't work in every situation. There is always an element of compromise as well. Thanks for replying ATKO

Great content Atko. Good on ya! I’m sure you’re on it, but a rematch with the Rallye would be great to see. It would also be great to see a flying lap with a standard WRX (FA20) compared to the STI (EJ25). A kind of “new vs old” tech comparo. Having FA20 would be great content and interesting lap times to have on the board for when the MY22 WRX with FA24 is announced and can be tested.

@@CarExpertAus would be epic to see an FA20 WRX on track to compare them all, the WRX is very capable on track and would think it might match the STI with Chris at the wheel.
@gavinwolfe32383 жыл бұрын
The FA20 is a good motor, especially if you get a JDM spec WRX or Levorg which use the 221kw version and match the WRX STI. I have the JDM Levorg myself, and really enjoy it. The 221kw engine matched to the CVT actually works well, and the 0-100 time is actually the same as the manual STI as well plus it gives surprisingly good economy the rest of the time when you are driving sensibly so it is very easy to live with as a daily driver.

I am so glad you are doing review Chris. Finally a real expert. I do have one question and anyone please enlighten me. I always thought that locking the diffs on smooth surfaces like tarmac was a no-no?? I was under the impression that was only advised to do on gravel or other loose surfaces?
@chrisatkinson74313 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it! As long as you have some slip across the axles then it should be fine. You just don't want to be driving round on normal roads like this, or at a slower speed. It had been a little damp that morning, and the grip was a bit lower as well, thats why it worked better in that setting. Normally I would run it more open on tarmac.
