This podcast will save lives. I believe that in my soul. It’s helping me. This is what our world needs right now. I wish everyone could hear this and get it. But I realize that you have to be open and willing to learn that there may be another way. We don’t need to stay in our suffering. Thank you Laura & Carl for sharing these videos and for being so open and vulnerable. 💗

As a fellow budding professional in the field, I find this therapist's approach to adolescent and family therapy both nuanced and pragmatic. Her emphasis on systemic interventions, rather than solely focusing on the identified patient, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of family dynamics. I particularly appreciate her stance on balancing appropriate boundaries with empathetic connection, which aligns well with current best practices in the field. Her insights on the importance of parental self-work and modeling healthy behaviors reflect a deep grasp of intergenerational patterns and their impact on family functioning. Additionally, her perspective on addressing sensitive topics like self-harm and suicidality shows a commendable balance between taking such issues seriously while avoiding unnecessary escalation. Overall, her methodology appears to be grounded in evidence-based practices while remaining flexible and client-centered, which is crucial when working with the complex needs of adolescents and their families.

I agree. I'm generally anti-therapy because most of the people I've seen go into psychology are extremely dysfunctional themselves. I don't know her personally, but she seems quite competent.

In the African Community these conversations are not happening. My father had 3 wives and the trauma, harm and betrayal we had to endure and witness has forever damaged my family. but that was normalized and considered ok. You are giving an insight on how you and your children have healed from something many will never be able to. Also have to echo some of the others this was my favorite episode and your best guest. Irina really gave insight while even opening up and sharing her own personal experience. You all went deep and we felt it. nice work B-side ! :)

Another q: I'm actually a teenager, and I love watching your guys' podcast. The honesty is so refreshing, praise the Lord. I want to ask : What can someone do if their sibling is struggling with mental health as far as creating an environment where hope is existent and healing is easier, but also not enabling whatever caused/causes the breach in their mental health? (Keeping in mind that Said sibling has already gone to all the resources that can be afforded by the parents)

2:40 HERE'S MY QUESTION CARL&LAURA: How do adult children get their parents to go to therapy? It's such a blessing that the two of you embraced it....I'm praying for the same for my parents. Had they don't this years ago we probably would've had more light and less hell in the home I grew up in. Would really love practical tips for how you approach the conversation as an adult to parents that may be skeptical AND sensitive to how their unheralded traumas impacted their kids!

10:51 such a good point. I grew up like this and the way I reacted wasn't leaned helplessness but perfectionism. My parents chastised me a lot when I got things wrong and it made me overcompensate. I ended up going to an Ivy League college, graduate school, and have a great job -- all things I couldn't have accomplished if I didn't have drive.... but it took me a long time to realize what the source of my drive was and why I had so much internal conflict even though outwardly it seemed like I was doing so well to everyone. ... I think the other thing people have to keep in mind about the advice from therapist or anyone who wants to help you with your kids, is that kids are all different. There is no kid who is the same as the other, reactions may be varied to these methods and tactics as well. W

Thank you for allowing your test to be your family's testimony to others, showcasing God's restorative work of healing and hope. Love the practicality of this Pod. Would love to hear more from a Biblical standpoint on parenting and raising teens as well as how you guys each went through your personal journey through the trials & your personal growth with the Lord. Now that you have experienced God's Character in new ways, how has that impacted your relationship with Him.

31:24 "once you switch your role of a parent from trying to look good, to trying to serve, solely, things change" I had to pause to process this. I am not even a parent, I am only a daughter (a grownup one) and this episode has tremendously helped me consider how to address issues in my upbringing and in my relationship with my parents nowadays. The quote I highlighted above... I had to pause to process it. Amazingly well said.

Thank you all, I’ve learned so much! Irene, could you please advise me how to loving be present for a child who is 14, and says he does not want to be gay, but now he has a very supportive friend group who encourages the choice to be openly gay? I am not foolish to think that my husband and myself carry the influence with a teen child with all of the outside influences that currently exist. I just want to love him well, and of course control the outcome, lol! Thank you again♥️

I have a question, how do therapists ensure that they don’t project their trauma onto their clients/patients or even give guidance that comes from a place of their own trauma; is it a skill they acquire in their training?
@Rae331993 ай бұрын
They absolutely need to do their own personal healing work. This should be a requirement for all therapists but sadly I think is rare.

Hi Carl & Laura Can you guys please address the question …. How do those of us that really need the resources that You & Carl had like Onsight, The Rehab he went to, Your Betrayal Trauma therapist, Dr. Daniel Amen etc., Carl’s therapist that he had on the Pod….My husband and I are in desperate need of this level of resources but don’t have the finances for this level of care. How were you guys able to make this possible? Did insurance cover any of it? How can you guys guide others like myself and my husband?

Do you guys have tips on finding therapists?? I have tried a few, some are better than others, but the hardest part is finding a good faith based therapist! Because it is such a big and valuable part of my life, it feels hard to find someone that understands wanting to live a faith based life.

What should replace the “why” when talking to teens about their behavior or decision making?
@RCGWho3 ай бұрын
I think assume the why is basic human sin nature and impulsivity. If they love God, and maybe even if they don't, talk about self-control, thinking through actions and consequences since their frontal lobe isn't fully developed, bring in a helpful scripture without using it as a weapon, listen to their thoughts or feelings that they had before, during, and/or after the event, then pray for them and hug them if they're open to both. And do all that calmly, in a brief amount of time, unless they want to talk more. Parenting is hard!! I hope others comment as well.

You’re teaching the church that you can be fixed by a human being, and can not be fixed without money. This is idolatry. So the people who can’t affrod therapy what do they do?
@stuartvincent79093 ай бұрын
The church needs professional help at times. Whether it is addictions, trauma, etc. If you are broke like I am, find a way to fit it in the budget.
@RCGWho3 ай бұрын
I'm becoming aware of a new idol in the church: therapy. God can't heal or restore? Prayer is superficial, trite, and powerless? Only the rich can heal? Prosperity gospel offshoot. Therapy used to be what the rich and famous did instead of seeking God. The therapist is a nice lady and says some helpful things, but you could also read some excellent parenting books and get mentored by a successful, older parent. But I believe fasting, prayer, and repentance are most important.
@oksanaharko25283 ай бұрын
Well, therapy helped me restore my relationship with God. And understand the unhealthy environment in the church I was in. If you can't build a good relationship with people, and you learn that in childhood, you'll have troubles building a relationship with God.
