ULTIMATE BMW M2 Guide 👌 (OG vs Comp vs CS) (The Holy Trinity) *Real world owners

In September 2020 I met up with Chris Kerr (AKA Whiskeytwentyone) and Matt Smart from ‪@SytnerTV‬ to look at the development of arguably one of the best BMW M cars to ever be made.
Launched in 2016 - the BMW M2 was a head liner grabber from day one. loved by journalists and enthusiasts alike, the car was an instant classic.
In 2018 - The critics of the OG M2 were answered with the launch of the BMW M2 Competition. Gone was the single turbo n55 engine, in came the s55 from the M3/M4 variants. But whilst it was the engine that grabbed the headlines, the reality was that the chases and handling was the big leap forward. Again, the car received huge praise from all corners... but it wasn't without its controversy...
With new EU regulations came more stringent exhaust emission standards and OPF filters!
Finally, the swan song! The M2 CS was launched only a few weeks ago, with orders of the limited run now completely sold out. is this the ultimate version of one of BMW's most recent success stories... Or a step too far????
We met up at Caffeine & Machine to discuss and debate the 4 years of evolution along with an "exhaust off" for you to enjoy...

Have you driven an M2C with DCT? Coming from an E46 M3 to a 2020 M2C with DCT, I enjoy the M2 much more the M3. Admittedly the transmission in the E46 M3 wasn’t one of BMW’s better moments, with a tail happy car like the M2C I’m quite happy to enjoy faster than humanly possible shifting with both hands on the wheel.

Thanks for a great vid. I’ve just fitted some carbon bits to my lci M2, every time i Drive it hard it is just such a great buzz (totally stock except for pipercross panel)..... As It’s now out of Warranty it’s time to start modding me thinks. I really like all variants..... But wouldn’t swap one for another and there’s nothing else I really want so mods route it is! I'm not looking for insane power, I'm looking to have good fun and a reliable car. The n55 of the M2 is a closed deck block with forged crank and rods , a bit different from other n55 engines

Got my OG LBB just under 34k. Have since spent £7k in mods which include the engine brace from the M3/4/M2C/M2CS and it makes the ride more compliant and sorts the chassis out. Got a milltek 300cel sports cat and the sound from stock exhaust is heavenly. Heard an M2C in a car park and anaemic is the term to use there! Also putting a larger bore turbo inlet has let it rev to red line better, that and chargepipe change (they can break) and upgraded FMIC.

Great video! I own a M2 Comp. And have a M2 CS in order. Here is how I see it: $9K for the carbon ceramics $8k for the for them extra CF parts (interior/exterior/body parts) $3K for the better leather and additional Alcantara $4K for the better suspension $2K for the wheels $1K for the GOLD wheels LOL $1.5K more power $5K for exclusivity Base M2 Comp: $65K We are are $98.5K I believe that the sticker on my CS is $94K. So, we are “within range”. No “deal” but about right.

Having driven the car now chap I can see how that might be the case but I’m not sure that a cheeky remap and suspension upgrades wouldn’t help get either model there also and keep some change in your pocket!

Don’t forget the CS comes with cup 2 which is good for headlines and of little use outside a track. Had 3 cars with them and they are amazing only if it’s dry and warm. Which the U.K. is not often.

Great video! I'm looking to buy either a F80 m3, OG m2 or F82 m4, all non comp as budget is £32k and buying out right. Selling my c63 and the cars have to tick all sound, performance and the way it looks. Looks and performance is there on all the M cars above but sound is my biggest gripe, which is why I do prefer the M2. This video puts a great case forward for the M2. Decisions decisions.

The suspension hasn’t changed it’s the rear subframe bushes to the chassis are solid mounted now in the comp instead of a rubber bushings in the OG m2.

Some good points brought up. The CS everyday driveability an interesting point. That the new suspension upgrade has made so much of a difference. I've yet to see/hear the American CS myself but the CO2 emissions certainly affect that exhaust note. What is it about the OG that makes it more track friendly than the Comp? I thought the Comp was upgraded for better track performance rather than streetride?

Cheers for your thoughts and comment bud. I can only speak for myself having owned both (now run and track my comp) but the OG comes “out of the box” track ready for me - where as the comp as stock is heavier and so needs turning “onto the tyre” in corners. Nothing that a few small modifications didn’t fix... mine ended up on Eibach springs and spacers along with a geometry set up and now it’s awesome on track. It’s all in the car - just needed to be bought out whereas the OG came good to go on track in my opinion out of the box!

@@qna95B hi chap 👋 For me I felt the OG was more suited as the lighter car - seemed happier with sharper turn in and the N55 unit just loved being used and abused. Still contemplating an OG as a track weapon - for me I would head there before the comp / CS which ironically are better road cars as they handle B roads and undulating roads much better. Only my thoughts though chappy 👍

Great video, thanks for taking the time. I would say however that you mention the N55 is 'straight out of the M135i and M140i'. The N55 in the M2 is quite far removed from the N55 in the M135i and of course the M140i has the B58. Having said this I'm sure you know this and it's easy to say the wrong thing when you are filming :-). Keep up the good work!

Just the M135i and the last "35i"s in general, as well as the og M2 came with the N55 engine. The M140i or all of the "40i"s come with the B58. Nice video tho, keep up the good work.

For the cars to sound better you need to let them run for a minute in idle then they are louder, after every start of warm Or not they go in a kind of cold start where they don’t pop an bang

Great video! I’m personally still so undecided between the OG M2 and M2 Comp for my next car. As mental as it sounds, the seats in the OG M2 are a bit turn off for me but I’m not sure if I’m just being stupid! Time will tell I guess..

There is a CS near me with 12,000 miles for $100,000. That's the real price of one, not the sticker. The OG is around $42,000 normally off lease with about 24,000 miles on them. So actually you could by 2 OG with some to spare in North Carolina, USA.

I’ve not heard of any gripes with earlier models chap. BMW are always making marginal improvements to cars so arguably the newer the better but a low mileage early example will no doubt be solid 👌

I think that OG M2 N55b engine sounds better! However M2c and CS are the better car in terms of power. But different engine and OG M2 is fairly reasonable price. I love my OG M2! That morning cold starts. And less wet-fart sounds awesome! 😍

Ive had the OG a now I have the CS, I have to be honest, but the OG has a terrible engine at that power output, the turbo is far to small and heat soaks before you are even out of 2nd. Also, the suspension is terrible. The seats are rubbish too, they look like the came out of the 1.8D.. The CS, in my opinion is one of the best driving, best looking and most balanced car I've ever owned and I think it's worthy of its price tag. Finaly, I think less than 100 cars made it to the UK due to the pandemic, making this a very rare car to own. BTW, I use it as a daily. Good video mind 👍

Just came from an RS3 to an OG 18 plate M2, my first BMW. I thought the sound would be a deal breaker...I was very wrong! The N55 sounds very good in the M2. The handling is just night and day as well. I have to say the M2 is a much better overall package.

I thought the same (I own an OG M2 DCT): Really enough power but a little bit more would be great. I upgraded to Stage 2: CSF intercooler, HJS 300cpi downpipe, alloy chargepipe and a pipercross air filter. It is dyno tuned with 430HP and 660Nm of torque with a great sound! Now I think that is the correct power and torque level for this car, the engine feels like it is supposed to be from factory. Absolutely recommended for every M2 OG owner! Greetings from Germany ✌️

I've driven an OG M2 for admittedly only 30 mins and at no time did i think it was underpowered for the road 🤣 it's the constant need for more power that's ruining drivers cars making them huge bloated pigs. Imo the M2 was quick but made me feel nothing as a drivers car. The steering has no feel and it felt bloated for its size but that's my opinion and loads of people rate them...

The best value would be the Comp as it has more power and better interior over the OG . The OG sounds better than the Comp which to be fair is a easy fix . The CS is a collectors car , if I was rich I would buy all three

@@CarMadDad the S58 is only just coming out, the S55 and it’s inherent crank pulley issue and DCT gearbox qwerks is what let’s the car down to some degree. The ZF8 is a superb box and is in all new M cars, mated to the B58 with a mild tune power figures of around 430bhp are easily achieved. What makes the OG M2 so great is it’s road manners and usability it gets from the N55 All the power up top and MAD high revs of the S55 makes it harder to exploit its potential as a road car, which is where they spend 99% of there time

@@avalaugh1980 Agree with all points made chap. I plan on addressing the crank hub at some stage in the future but am hopeful of making it beyond three years before I have to do so! I'm a huge fan of the OG and the N55. Love the ZF8 as I have and still do own cars with the box. I think that the S55 in the comp however adds to its character and that the DCT box (Although not as friendly day to day) again points back to how the car is developed - for track work. Agreed not many of them will go there - but to me im glad it was developed that way as its what i plan to use it for as much as possible.

@@CarMadDad I’m under no illusion, if I could have afforded one new I would have got one, but got a new 3 series touring in 2015 and a new M140i in 2019, both of which I love, still have, and work well with 2 kids 👍

OG m2 is the best option for most enthusiast. M2 CS is for people with deep pockets. Not worth to upgrade to m2 comp or caps until you lapping at the nur every weekend

My M2 CS has the 405 horsepower engine not the 444 HP engine as advertised. BMW's official documentation (MCO/MSO) for my car shows that it came with the 405 HP engine. I contacted BMW North America on April 19,2021 about the horsepower discrepancy. They refuse to address my concerns.

Hi Mary Thank you for the view and comments. I’m not sure if you are aware - but the engine (“unit”) in the comp and CS are the same (S55) the major difference in the coding and BHP output and so I would HOPE that there is a basic error somewhere… Have you tested the car at all???

I have to disagree with the OG M2. Had one and that engine is a bit flat. Might have sounded ok but had no top end. Change gear at 4-5-7k rpm same thing. No point revving it up. Ended up selling it. Eying the M2 Comp hoping the engine might feel a bit more special. CS makes no sense for me. You can get the M2C to the same level with a few choice mods. Love the looks but again, not sure worth the price at all.

I agree that a stock OG M2 does feel a bit flat. I modified mine over these last 3 years since buying and each subsequent mod made an incremental increase to how the engine felt, particularly at the mid to top end. 300 cell cat, larger intercooler, metal charge pipe were first and made a slight difference but was felt more on hot days with the IC helping with inlet temps. Next up was the Eventuri carbon intake, again another slight increase in top end feel. Then came the M Performance exhaust, bum dyno says it's faster but in reality it probably isn't, then a forge boost pipe (for reliability) and then a mild remap of which this seems to have tied all the mods together and now the car is noticeably stronger at the top end. Now you can rev it out to around 6.5k and the car feels more satisfying to drive with the added mid / top end urge. As for the M2C, YES the engine does make the car feel more special, it does feel more 'M' and due to the extra weight the car does ride better but IMO my OG has bags more character than the S55 engined car due to the sound. Of course that can be rectified with equal length pipes, OPF removal and a nicer udder free back box but that little lot is quite the sum of money.

@@CarMadDad it’s an excellent car, but I’ve had problems. Electrical Headlight Structural I’ve had Audi, Mercedes, now BMW & the latter is the worst customer service I’ve ever had. The whole concept of the M series is awesome, just sometimes the reality isn’t.

If you own an OG M2 keep it as the best bargain. If you own an M2C keep it as the M car it should have always been. If you have an M2CS keep it as the ultimate M2. They all have different characters: OG M2 is more nimble, the M2C rides best, the CS is an expensive, accessorised and retuned M2C with full M4C power but disappointingly heavier like the M2C. This noise difference for M2C and CS is irrelevant out of EU and UK - no particulate filters to choke it. The CS bonnet is *FAKE* since the track M2CS Racing has an M2C bonnet! THE SUSPENSION DIFFERENCE IN M2C IS UP FRONT - THE CARBON STRUT!

Cut the back box out of the Comp and half the dpf it's 300 quid and sounds way better than the OG, the comp looks so much better than the OG plus the interior is way better.

M2 comp all the way, the OG lacks something the competition has in terms of handling and power, of course you can mod the m2 but to me the s55 will always be above the n55 it came after the og m2 for a reason and in my country the difference between both is like 8-10k which tbh isn’t that much if ur a little patient

Completely disagree with this video. I owned a 2016 DCT OG M2 and daily drove it for 2 years, and when I got rid of it, I thought it was one of the most overrated cars i've ever owned. The DCT dump shifts and unsettles the rear axle in sport and sport+, the ride is appalling and its impossible to get any grip on the street because of those two things and the steering is totally lifeless. The N55 is a boring engine for a sports car, cause it ultimately doesn't really like to be pushed. It works in a 435i, not in the M2. I sold it and never missed it, found it to be totally boring. Because of this, I initially turned down an M2 CS allocation. After all the rave reviews, I was fortunate enough to grab a 6spd at MSRP before the sold out. Absolutely one of the best cars i've ever owned, amazingly compliant suspension, steering has great feel for an EPAS system, the CS tune of the S55 has tons of character and great linear power delivery and the gearbox is great for a BMW. I'm 1 year and 6 months into ownership, and i don't see myself ever selling it. The CS badge was never supposed to be a "track car", in fact M's internal brief on the car said "track focused with an eye on street use". They nailed that car, its worth what it costs.

The original car is the one to go for, I think the cs will lose more in depreciation in the next 3 years than it would cost to buy the original. Also if you have £90k to spend on a car I would rather get 2 and have a dedicated track/ weekend car and a daily driver.

I think the Comp car is the obvious sweet spot considering the S55, 6 piston brakes and other upgrades like suspension you mentioned. You guys are just being kind to your buddy there for some reason, modest Brits. The OG/N55 is certainly not the best track weapon with known oil starvation issues at track, plus oil leaks, water pump failures; not the best engine here to over stress. Twin turbo’s are better than 1 for less lag and more power as 6 piston front and 4 piston rear larger brakes are certainly better for track day. What are you guys smoking? Hilarious how the OG owners are like, “I totally agree, the OG is better..”. Lol I don’t have a horse in this race, I have a ‘21 Audi RS5 B9.5 Sportback with carbon ceramic brakes that would smoke that OG and Comp all day long, but still would love the Comp or CS to add to my collection.🍺

Nice Cars, im looking between M2 Comp vs new S650 mustang GT here in Australia and its a damn hard choice... M2comps selling at around $13k less than lowest spec mustang we can get so M2 is winning.
