I would first say thank you soooo much!!! I wish I had found your videos sooner. The only thing I would like to point out is in the ATI teas online book they state that both question marks and exclamation points go inside the quotation mark. I had got that one wrong on a practice test and I went back and double-checked it. Really Thank you for everything you have done!!

Not sure if this may help but looking at the question mark in or out of the sentence, I feel we can say that if it's a direct quote from the author it should be inside and if someone else is questioning the direct quote then it should be outside. What do you think?

Technically, quotation marks should not have been used. But you never know on the TEAS. Good luck to you!
@ChrissyL1111
@ChrissyL1111 3 жыл бұрын
For the quotation marks topic, why don’t you put a comma before the quote in quotation marks? For example, 11:08, Everyone should be finished reading “Sherlock Holmes”....Why isn’t there a comma after the word reading? There are a few other examples like this that are questionable as well that look like it should have a comma but doesn’t. At 11:56 Bob Woodward has written a new book, “Fear,”.... Here a comma was used after book.
@carolynmcallister1496
@carolynmcallister1496 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the example you mentioned at 11:08 is a compound sentence, so it must include a semi-colon to separate the independent clauses. However, if you were to use a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS), you WOULD use a comma BEFORE the quotation mark and use a FANBOYS after the end quotation mark. In the 11:56 reference, the comma was used BEFORE the title of the book, and a semi-colon was used to combine the independent clauses. Hope this helps!

@carolynmcallister1496
@carolynmcallister1496 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thank you for patiently waiting for me to respond. This is tricky for sure, and you have asked a great question. "Does" can either be a helping verb or a main verb. The subject of the sentence is "anyone," which is singular. And the rule of grammar is to always use "does" with singular subjects, and the corresponding verb would be "have." For example, you would not write: "Do he has..." Instead, you would write: "Does he have..." This is probably clear as mud for you, and it was difficult for me to explain. However, my advice to you: Please do not try to over-analyze questions on the actual TEAS. Students who make that mistake often do not pass the exam. Good luck to you!

Stephen, I've read your question about dependent clauses, but I wasn't able to comment directly on your post (for some reason). To answer your question, a dependent clause is considered a fragment (if it appears by itself). If it is part of a complete sentence, then it would be considered a dependent clause. (Are you having fun yet?) I wouldn't spend much time worrying about this type of information, though! :)

Hi, professor, I have a question for you. Which of the following uses correct punctuation for a quotation? A) "A good laugh and a long run," she said. "Are the two best cures for anything." B) "A good laugh and a long run," she said, "are the two best cures for anything." C) "A good laugh and a long run are the two best cures for anything." She said. D) "A good laugh and a long run are the two best cures for anything," She said. Why are not choice A and choice C correct?
@carolynmcallister1496
@carolynmcallister1496 3 жыл бұрын
Correct answer: B) "A good laugh and a long run," she said, "are the two best cures for anything." A) is not correct because there is a period after 'said.' Also, the A in 'are' should not be capitalized because it is a continuation of the first part of the sentence. C) is not correct because the S in 'she' should not be capitalized. Good luck!
