A great talent and their song 'We Only Just Begun" was the wedding song at almost every wedding I went to in the 80"s. The music was always soothing and made you feel great. They had several TV specials and were very popular, many a male date was dragged to their concert or if you needed forgiveness for messing up, buy tickets to the Carpenters and you were instantly forgiven and got your second chance (LOL)!! Just watching both of you react during the song said it all, happy, surprised and very mellow!!

My dear friend Hal Blaine told me that when he played drums on this track, it was at a hard tempo for all the players to keep perfect time together, so he suggested using a click track to help keep everyone's tempo together.Hal played on so many different hit records from The Beach Boys, to Frank Sinatra, John Denver, and a lot of Carpenters records.

Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The Carpenters recorded this one, but many of their songs were recorded by Dionne Warwick or other artists. Please consider reacting to some other Bacharach and David songs: (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me (Warwick); Do You Know the Way to San Jose? (Warwick); I'll Never Fall in Love Again (Warwick); I Say a Little Prayer (Warwick); The Look of Love (Dusty Springfield); One Less Bell to Answer (The Fifth Dimension); Promises, Promises (Warwick); Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (B.J. Thomas); This Guy's in Love with You (Herb Alpert); Walk on By (Warwick); What the World Needs Now Is Love (Jackie DeShannon). Thanks!

Close to You is a lovely song, although it's probably more about infatuation. One of the saddest songs I've ever heard about love is Karen Carpenter's SAY GOODBYE TO LOVE. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJrblnhunNCHY9U Listen to the lyrics. See what you think, Karen wanted love, marriage, and children in her life, but it never worked out. She was married once, but she and her husband, who did not treat her well, broke up. Not long after that she went into the hospital for treatment for anorexia nervosa. GOODBYE TO LOVE seems to describe Karen's sadness in that she could not find the love she wanted.

The lyrics of the typical Carpenters songs are so dangerously naive that anyone else singing them would face the prospect of ridicule and humiliation. It needed to be sung perfectly, and they were, every time.
