Racing our Harbor Freight V Twin Dragster at the Track for the Final Time (without Boost)

We built this Harbor Freight 670cc dragster years ago in my parents garage. It always ran well at the track, but it was never very fast. Being that it was one of our first ground up builds, we built the frame heavier than what was necessary. In today's episode of CarsandCameras, we're reviving the mini drag rail, taking it to the track, and getting ready to install a turbocharger!

Also, real drag slicks "grow" on the big end, meaning as tire speed increases, centrifical force expands the effective diameter of the tire at the expense of width, effectively giving you a taller gear ratio as speed increases. Another thing, you might want to consider some form of actual driver actuated clutch, to allow for a higher rpm launch without sacrificing final drive gear ratio.

That 670 sounds so good just like an actual drag car. and so much better than any other 670. I'm not sure why it must be the header that you have on it. but I don't think it will sound as good with a turbocharger on it. and I'm not huge fan of turbocharging because of turbo lag. and because they are hard on motor oil. in fact it's recommended that a person use oil specially designed for turbochargers. and if a person does it right they should use an intercooler. and plumbing it in can be a pain in the ass. but a belt driven supercharger would be the way to go.

So hyped to see the drag rail back in action!!! As I'm sure you know, there's gonna be a LOT of changes you'll need to make if you're going for boost. Obviously, it won't make a ton of boost, but in order to effectively make use of that forced induction, there's a few factors to consider. To start, fuel injection and adjustable ignition timing might be the safest route; it certainly worked with the turbo drift trike. I think you'll have too hard of a time getting carburetors to correctly meter enough fuel under boost with a twin cylinder engine, and getting the ignition timing right will be tricky without an ECU and independent ignition coils to handle it. Depending on how much boost you end up with, thicker head gaskets might also be on the table. A bigger fuel tank is a MUST, as well. You'll definitely need a wideband air/fuel ratio sensor and gauge to monitor engine performance. Different rear tires will help a lot too, especially if you spin.

"I think it's geared too low" CarsAndCameras every time, hence all the clutches having nightmares. ET comes from average speed meaning the more time at lower speeds hurts you more than a little bit more top speed helps at the very end of the pass. So getting up and out of the hole ALLOT faster and getting upto 100mph at the trap faster helps allot more than getting say 105mph at the traps where that extra 5mph was for only the last 10 feet but accelerating slower off the line and all the way up to to that point.
