I think they are comparing apples to oranges with regards to the CVT and clutch. They have worn out belts driving offroad. Mopeds and even big 400 and 600cc cruiser scooters run CVT's and the belts last a good long time...certainly longer than that clutch has lasted. With that gearing, the clutch is slipping for many seconds before it can lock up. I'd bet money that a 30 series would last longer on that bike on the street than it does on a mini bike on the dirt.
@hunterdan20023 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking the same thing, cvt that is properly lined up, will last a lot longer than that clutch did. What chews up the belts are dust, dirt and water. Look how many of the high hp atvs and sxs's are using them and they last forever.

Back in the day, motorcycles had separate engines and transmissions. Vintage HD's were kinda famous for this. There'd be a primary chain. or belt, from the engine to the transmission and clutch, then the chain or belt to the rear wheel. I've even seen them with one of the four gears replaced with reverse, for trikes and sidecar equipped bikes. Why hasn't someone made something like this for minibikes and go karts? Seems like that would be something would sell pretty good...
@stevenbonnesen59883 жыл бұрын
There's been individuals that have made their own transmissions...but to manufacture transmissions for mini bikes would be cost prohibitive... Mustang motorcycle company built transmission for their small bikes separate from the engine...you can purchase a 4 speed transmission for BSA Triumph or Norton with the clutch set up but there is the cost...and that's why you don't see transmissions manufactured for what's consider a child's toy...now what these guys could build and likely sell well would be the step thru Cushman scooter replica with modern technology and 250/400 cc engines/with trans and charging systems...
@Cee64E3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenbonnesen5988, I hear you. But when I actually looked to see if there were any transmissions like the old ones made, what I saw was a lot of foreward/reverse gearboxes for go karts and such. So, *somebody* is making at least one type of transmission for small engine powered off road toys. Even a two-speed with a manual clutch would be an improvement.

Top speed will probably be about the same, but they could gear it down a little more, make getting off the line a lot faster and as the engine drops load, it'll drop rpm and maintain speed. Cvt is the best way to go in this situation.

@Just-InTimeRepairs3 жыл бұрын
@@derekmaxwell8164 The clutch will top out at a lower speed compared to the torque converter. This is because the front pulley enlarges as rpms increase, and the rear pulley does the opposite, resulting in much higher gearing at high rpms. The clutch is fixed and can't do that which usually results in it being about half the top speed of a TC.

I would imagine that Charles felt the sensation to do the Flintstones thing more than several times. coming from an avid snowmobiler if a CVT system is set up properly, it would have no problem with well over one hundred and fifty journeys. I've done it quite a few times, however some snowmobiles have to carry additional fuel to run such distances. and a person should always carry a spare belt, most all snowmobiles have a provision for that under the hood a long with spare spark plugs. something else a CVT system requires is adequate ventilation. it would be even more necessary for a vehicle operated in summertime weather. they make kits for some snowmobiles to add extra ventilation to the hoods of some snowmobiles. because there is a lot friction involved with the operation of CVT systems, and they can get very hot.

I watched one where, leaving everything stock, except for the spring that is connected to the middle of 3 holes closest to the gov. arm pivot, and connects to the carb. throttle arm. Take a medium sizes tie-wrap and run it through the coils on the spring, cut the head off a 2nd. tie-wrap, slide it over the first one so that they prevent the spring from expanding. No more governor. Try it and let us know what you think. (don't forget to loosen throttle lever tension nut).
