@@Nebula_Ultra To overcome IS to fight, to survive and come out the other side IS NOT just lying there and 'taking it'. There are many ways to fight, it is physical and psychological. You do what you need to do in order to face another day. To suggest they just lay there suggests passive compliance when every ounce of their being would have been railing against the injustice that was being perpetrated against them. Many of these women were protecting their children and were terrified of what might happen if they didn't comply.

There are Male victims too and Brian and Katie were shot dead. They didn't survive yet they're still victims.

This entire process is outstanding. The researchers and writers did a fantastic job, the narrator did amazing and had depth and feeling. And the facts. The facts are most important and I love that this whole case file is structured the way it is. This is the best I've heard in a long time, the content is horrifying and terrible but you get the job done with class and facts and I applaud this channel. Woo.

I don't have a diagnosis but I believe I have some form of auditory processing disorder and the way people speak, their voice really makes a difference in order for me, my brain to be able to absorb and process what they are saying. I love the couple who were mentally preparing for this, and actually went through with their plan when the attack happened. Had the husband beaten the shit out of the guy, or had the police arrived earlier, they would be considered heroes now. They're still heroes in my book.

@@norbicsek I know that it's easy for me to sit here and talk. But in a country where there's the right to have guns, I'm very surprised that no one was able to hold him at gunpoint during this time.

​@@markkofi8522 You could've stopped at the first sentence. It is indeed easy to sit and talk. All of this happened in California, one of the least gun-savvy states to this day, and this was in the '70s, when people still thought it was a good idea to leave their doors unlocked for the night. But then again, it's not entirely unlikely that some of these people did actually have either a firearm, or something else to protect themselves with, they just didn't use them, because adrenaline is one hell of a drug. Remember that the one person who did in fact have a gun for sure, was the rapist, and he still didn't use it in this one instance, where it would've served him better than ever. Turns out we're not the most rational beings when we're in a state of shock.

Also if they did have a gun in their house, the rapist had already taken the ammunition out of the gun and moved the gun to another location, he did that multiple times. One time he put the gun under the couch and lined the bullets up in a row under the bed. He was always in their houses preparing for the eventual break in. So even if you had a gun, chances are, he already moved it before he woke them up.

Why are only female victims 'survivors'? Can't you imagine the trauma of the WHOLE family, the men women and children when this sadistic attacker came into their homes? Please either be clinical like Larry Crompton and call them 'victims' which is most correct, or call them ALL 'survivors'. This modern parlance to call only rape victims 'survivors' is really demeaning to the other traumatised family members as well as women who have, against the odds, fought off serial killers which has happened. Aside from that inappropriate use of the term 'survivor' which is really grating, this is an exceptionally good podcast

Calling the victims "survivors" is wildly inaccurate and misleading, in a forced attempt to make victims sound more "empowered" than what they actually are in these situations. As if it was a shame to be a victim in such cases. A survivor is someone who stays alive by being pro-active, something those victims cannot be, being tied up at gun point and at the mercy of their assailant, is the definition of powerless. Also the act of surviving doesn't necessarily involve danger from a third party. The reason the victims survived is because they were spared, unlike Brian and Katie who were shot dead because they saw the culprit's face. They can't be called "survivors" since they are dead. Yet they are victims. In addition, he would become a serial murderer, another reason not to refer to his victims as survivors.
