Can My $10,000 Wrecker Save This $250,000 Camper Truck??

This Ford F-450 was using a boat ramp to back a pontoon boat into the lake when the ramp surface gave way and the truck broke through. That left the truck, camper, and boat all stuck in the water. Some other pickups attempted to pull him out, but were unsuccessful. So I brought the 4x4 wrecker up to see if I could get it rescued from the lake.

This IS the boat ramp! Clearly it’s a ramp that needs a little maintenance, but it is indeed the actual boat ramp where they were supposed to be launching that boat.
@bertschb

I've launched at that ramp dozens of times. It's a very shallow and gently sloping ramp. Gets quite a few people in trouble because of how far you have to back in to launch most boats. Great job on the recovery!

That man showed so much appreciation and gratitude! I know you don’t charge but when people insist on paying you something it makes me smile, as that’s how I was raised! I recently pulled a few trucks out of the ditch during our attic storm that hit Tennessee, one driver a young guy didn’t even get out of his car ( didn’t want to ruin his shoes ) let alone say thank you! The other was a 20 something lady with 3 kids and looked like she was going into labor any day, she insisted on giving me 20 dollars and a hug. I slipped the 20 in her coat pocket when she hugged me. Treat people how you want to be treated or how you want your wife and kids treated! Help out those in need and you might get the same kindness when you’re in need!

I charge the same amount as any other wrecker service does and around here anything off-road will cost 25-35% more than a regular tow because the extra wear and tear on the equipment should be paid for by the customers who cause it my offroad wreckers aren't cheap to running either but old military deuces and 5 tons depending on what's stuck aren't cheap to run and im pretty much the only service around that'll take jobs off main roads

I suggested to Matt at MORR to build a folding light stand into a roof rack for night recoveries. He has room on the roof of the banana or Morrvair. Four forward facing work lights and one pointing down for an area light around the truck. Casey does recoveries on roads and other stuff where the portable lights are probably better for him.

True, but there's also a lot of self protection in those electronics. They're constantly monitoring the circuit with low voltage. If it detects a fault, whether open or short circuit, it will disable power to prevent damage to the circuitry in the module. The downside is sometimes you need to clear a fault with a scan tool when a light bulb goes out before the light will work again.

As someone else commented about the rear axle and possible water intrusion, I certainly would suggest this truck owner check the diffs and even the transfer case for water. Leave the unit sit overnight and then carefully back the drain plugs out enough to get a sample with a clean catch container and then pour that into a narrow glass jar to let sit and examine for water in the oil. If there is water in the driveline that would be bad news down the road. The gen set, without a doubt change the oil on it and probably first off pull the spark plugs before cranking it over to shoot out any water that may have entered the intake system. I'm sure he was not a "happy camper" that night and such a relief to get pulled out.

Assuming the guy makes it home ok, after a good night's sleep, viewing it all in the daylight will hopefully reveal that any damage is minor. Once he gets a clear head, he should be able to figure out what needs attention. All of your suggestions are good ones.

$250,000!!! The camper doesn’t even have a front window! Makes me feel good that I bought a 1973 K20 deluxe camper pkg, 9.5 sunline camper and 19’ boat w/150hp for $7,500. All the money they spent, they should have a rubber truck tire chock, tethered to the truck behind the rear wheel. As soon as you have the trailer in the water where you want it, set the chock, put the boat on and drive up the ramp. The chock will drag behind until you get off the ramp. This is old school, but I have backed down steeper ramps at low tide(with the camper on) and never had any trouble.

Could you please suggest to those people that they should get their vehicle differential oil changed, and if they have drum brakes the auto adjuster dried out and anti-seize put on the star wheel barel. This may save them grieve in the future.
