Now picture this, being an 8yo non English speaking child trying to play this game, in a time where there was no internet available in your country and none of the few gaming publications would make a guide regarding this game. It was utter chaos to lear how to digivolve or to progress at all. After years I’ve been able to play it again and completed it. this game had so much potential but at the same time it was so underdeveloped and plagued with bad design choices that it’s just sad to watch. Good video, thanks!

True i know catch digimon from internet, this game has potential like system catch digimon(like a pokemon), its cool cause we can use any digimon and open more any digivolution tree, but the problem is 2. 1 you need tank for explore and that thing suck like seriously i only need 10 step for 1st boss but no no you to much explore and doesnt have gas for you tank so please restart. And 2 same dungeon crawl and not open world like last or next digimon game. And dungeon + tank = disaster I want play this again if they plan remake/remaster it but please atleast discard 1 from that 2 system. I can play with limited moving tank atleast it open world and not same dungeon. Or i can play it in dungeon but atleast its unlimited move i like explore dungeon without math my move. For some reason digimon has problem with number 2 not fan digimon 02 anime or this game

Your supposed to get a toy plane from the Tamers Club and catch that metalgreymon, as he caps at level 27 and makes your other digimon irrelevant, making it easy to DNA digivolve them many times over, by the time your metalgreymon is maxxed out the other will be boss. Also I can tell you didn't get very far with the footage shown here. I did enjoy the video though.
@Caspicum8 жыл бұрын
+Jake Herter Oh shit. I had a feeling you could capture him, but by that point, I had stopped caring. Also, I thought I was near the end of the game. I didn't finish it, but I think I came close. I intentionally avoid using late-game footage for most videos because I encourage people to play it for themselves, and I like to leave something for them to discover. That said, I may have still been early-game. I really had no way to tell. Felt like I was pretty close though. Had a few interactions with that one girl, and stopped playing shortly after the dungeons started introducing a bunch of obstacles. It's also been a little over a year, and my memory is garbage.
@jakeherter8 жыл бұрын
Casp Osaurus nowhere near it; there are two more maps and the tank upgrades twice. If you got to the part where kim makes the robot giaia then you are about halfway through. Giaia is the last boss and after that is a bonus end game dungeon called the tera domain with 99 floors. I really enjoyed the reviews; especially 4; as your ire reflected my own. I loved digimon as a child and played all three original games enough to compete for the time I've spent playing wow, but had no critical faculties for them; they were digimon, they were infallible. In fact in 2006 I saw a copy of dw4 in a Wal-Mart and my heart started racing as I was in my late teens and never even heard of it. I purchased it and was more disappointed then the first time I had sex with a condom. I shot the game out of a cannon and started playing wow.

This was a game that I took years of a break from, then went back to finally beat. I have such mixed feelings about it, because it could be fun and likable, but so frustrating of a grind. Easily the worst part was having to constantly DNA digivolve back to nothing in order to progress all over again. The system actually had depth when you figured out how to use it to get rare digimon, but having to do that multiple times for each party member just destroyed the pacing for me. If it was just once and then optional, I think it would have been better. You could argue that the first game also had the "reset to scratch" thing going on, but I still found that to be more of a tolerable routine.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
The guts of combat and progression aren't *too* bad, the speed of gameplay just destroyed any hope it had of being even remotely playable. As a kid with nothing better to do, I probably would've loved it. As a big boy who puts his own diaper on, I gotta spend that time putting diapers on.
@JetZV8 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I like this game infinitely more than World 1. I didn't like the randomness that the first game had to offer and I like the dungeon crawl style of gameplay. Something that irritated me throughout this review was your lack of research into the DNA Digivolution mechanic; yes, the DP is influenced by the amount of times the event happens. For every DNA Digivolution, the DP of the result goes up. Certain Digimon get better evolutions with higher DP. For instance, the only way to get Omnimon is to digivolve a MetalGreymon that has 20 or higher DP. Anything lower is WarGreymon, so you're not stuck with trash; I honestly think the mechanic is smart and I think your lack of knowledge about it was simply due to a small amount of play time.
@JetZV6 жыл бұрын
Christ, it's been a year and I have more issues, but it's mostly about your humor. Honestly, 8:14 "Have autism"? Screw off with that crap, the mechanic is done to prevent guaranteed captures and gives the game an edge. Also, I greatly overestimated how far you got into the game overall. FUN FACT: You get to visit File Island from the first game about two-thirds of the way in. As for how the maps look... what did you expect? The game is a Dungeon Crawler, it's supposed to be cramped and linear. With how much you hate it here, you probably loathe most tabletop games, too.

Well I just realized that this game is a roguelike! Many elements similar to the Mystery Dungeon games, such as random procedural generated dungeons and a kind of permadeath with that DNA digivolve mechanic. The thing that turned me off was the DNA digivolve, because seeing a flashy scene with two badass digimon becoming a little shit was so... non rewarding. The opposite of that. And Ultimate digimons having a hard time with a gizamon. But I actually like the setting. Like you said, there was indeed a good foundation. Just poorly executed.

The battle graphics is great(the framerate isn't so bad when 1 digimon is shown attacking during attack scene), that what made me finish the game, the worst thing about this game is the time needed, it's so fucking slow for a grindy game. I have read an article where that DNA digivolution stat increase is not significant, it's better to go for higher EL(Level) limit for better stats.

I personally like this one over the other Digimon World games, for the target audience is waaaay more comprehensible, plus the DNA evolutions are quite comprehensible. You'll always see that Digimon of X family + Digimon of Y family = Digimon of Z family, with X Y and Z being always the same. There are a few exceptions where you can fuse X and Y to get X or Y, which makes it easier since you know what to capture to make your digimon stay the way it was (I had a Veemon using Agumon + Biyomon (both evolved), and kept fusing Veemon/Veedramon with the version of Biyomon that corresponded. Alternatively I Grabed the "free" Metalgreymon you're given and made him some random virus mon, and from there back to the agumon line over and over.)

I spent a lot of time in this game. I liked the combat and the leveling and DNA Digivolving, even if it did mean a ton of grinding. DNA Digivolving was tedious but it was rewarding with learning which moves work well together to make the best team possible. It does get really tough at the end. It would've been nice to see some more research put into this review, especially with DP. It is important for getting certain Digimon (Omnimon requires 20+ DP. That's a lot of DNA). All in all, an enjoyable video.

From what I understand, I don't think the abrupt change in game style was simply a random choice. In Japan, there have long been two main digimon series...Digimon World, and Digimon Story. The Digimon World games have been the ones that are like upgraded and expanded versions of the tomagachi toys. The Digimon Story games are the ones that have been more RPG like. I think what happened is that the games we know in the US as Digimon World 2, 3, 4, DS, and Dawn/Dusk are likely all called Digimon STORY in Japan and that the games that are called Digimon World in Japan, such as Re: Digitize and Next Order, are the more exploration and caring for your digimon ones.

Digimon World 2 was my first digimon game entry in my life (and my first RPG too, btw - i miss the day when i finnaly had my psone). I played this game when i was yonger, but i never got past the first mission (my reckon about how MP and EP works were but nothing, so i always got my ass kicked). One day, PSone broke and only a couple years latter i could bet this game through emulation. Played it to get almost every possible inch of experience that i could not have back in my "golden days". Enjoyed it at its very end, but what kills this game is how repetitive it gets, specialy if you want to go for the super digivolutions (omnimon, diaboromon and bahumon, if think those are the names). just so that u know - in order to get those, you would need to spam a 20+DP on a specific digimon and evolve it to mega evolution just to get like a super ultra rare model and its unic move/attack. (wich means u would need to perform 20 DNA-evolutions... if u played this game, u know how tedious and time consuming it was to perform a single DNA-evo, imagine 20....). So basicaly, unless if you you are like me, just play the game for the "roof levels", where u are obligated to DNA-evolve in order to get to higher levels, and ONLY then get DNA-evos, otherwise u would be stucked on a certain portion of the game forever.

I guess you're not supposed to know this as a kid but: - The new level of the DNA digimon is the current level of the first + the current level of the second divided by 3. So 15+15 = 18 max level. - There are forms to predict the digimon you'll DNA digivolve into, they depend on the type advantage. Vaccine + Virus = Vaccine. - DP doesn't account on max level. DP serves to determine your evolution. Did you not think it weird for Patamon to evolve to Ninjamon, and not Angemon? DP. - You can upgrade the parts of your tank. So the first part you get can actually have 500 EP, turning EP into a non-issue. - Guard heals exactly 10% of your MP, rounded down, so 159MP = 15MP healed. 160MP = 16MP healed. This is really important because the abilities can cost a lot after Perfect form. There's also heals and an ability called "Necro Magic" that sucks the MP of a dead digimon. - There's an arena where you battle other tamers and upgrade your patent, even if I don't really know exactly what benefits you get. There are some good items, and iirc the last tournament is against the three leaders, if you win, you are the new leader of your team. I think there are some missions later on that need you to be at a certain patent to accept. No EXP there, tho. - You got nowhere close to the end of the game. The story is pretty good with some twists and turns and even a visit to the digital world. A big number of dungeons that force you to grind some DNA evolutions to be able to pass them, some nice bosses too. I think the game can go on for more than 100 hours easily depending on how much you grind. Anyways, good review for someone spending little time in the game, I guess. But there is a reason for it to be the favorite dungeon crawler for some.

this was my first digimon game, and I love it. I don't mind the grind as a frequent JRPG player. there are a number of tricks you can use to speed up the DP process. a lot of in game "secrets" which are perfectly solvable without resorting to google. the combat mechanics are really good, attack, interrupts and counter attacks on top of virus/vaccine/data and elemental system. the degree of customization you can have over your digimon is also great. I did not mind the dungeons because this game is rogue like. this game is pure gameplay over everything else, my kind of game. you can find the skill that lets you steal MP (its necessary for the after game tower), you can catch the very first ultimate you encounter early on in the game... etc lots of things to discover. the tank is also fun. it seems weak at first but you can upgrade the storage, the EP so much and it feels really rewarding when your tank becomes OP. the trainer can also "participate" in battles using items - which actually help a lot if you are doing speed run (no grinding as much) through the game. that being said, the only way I play this now is via EMULATOR to speed up the battles. yeah the animations are slow, but hey this was way back in PS1, not an excuse but the gameplay kept me through it the first few times. now I play this once in a while via emulator, i suggest you guys try it on emulator as well.
@picohan30294 жыл бұрын
I've started to play it a bit and holy the psx emulator is a savior i wouldn't have lasted 10 min with how slow combats animations are x) and i've played several times through the 1st Digimon world x)
@Beray026 жыл бұрын
Comparing it to the first one of course there are no real comparisons as the first world game was a masterpiece, however I really enoyed this game it was one of my favorite games growing up. I felt it was a great early take on a different style RPG separate from the first one. You had to guess a lot less at who or when your digimon will be evolving, your digimon don't randomly die halting a lot of progress to the game. There are of course many flaws with this game but I thought it was really fun, gave a great look at what building a team of digimon would look like, yes at times was repetitive and slow moving forward but there was a feeling of always forward momentum which was a big issue with the original.
@Caspicum6 жыл бұрын
There's no denying the original was infuriating at times, especially when you were trying to make significant progress, but the idea was so fresh, so clean. It was truly a special experience that you couldn't have anywhere else, even with all of the grating issues, and I'd argue it's still not an experience any game has captured since. Digimon World 2 is very safe, and is a fairly decent mix of a mystery dungeon title, and a generic, turn-based JRPG. While mystery dungeon titles were still fresh in the late '90s/early 2000s, the JRPG had preceeded it by well over a decade, and it was nothing special by any stretch.

This is my favorite PS1 game of all time. Its biggest shortcoming is the painfully long battle sequences, but if it's run on an emulator, it's a lot more bearable. I've somewhat recently come across a hard mode hack and it completely changed the way I used to do each playthrough. All of the attacks that were pretty much useless or the exact same as other attacks are much more unique and useful. Bosses are actually challenging and force you to strategize instead of just spamming Duo Scissor Claw and any other 3-target attack. Some Digimon that are in the game's files, but not in the final release, were added back in including Kimeramon. You can tame the Chaos versions of Wargreymon, Metalseadramon, and Piedmon. Evolutions follow other media much more closely, i.e. Patamon evolving into Angemon at lower DP levels instead of Ninjamon. I could keep giving examples, but I'm not going to. It's just a much better version of the game and I don't think I'll ever go back to playing the original again.
@Caspicum2 жыл бұрын
That's crazy. I'm about to remake this video so it's not garbage, I should consider mentioning the hack. Did they speed up the battles at all? I'm about to play the original version on legitimate hardware and not looking forward to kissing 100 or so hours of my life away from slow animations.

I do believe this game can be fixed for the modern day. 1. Digibeetle working like a 2d zelda 2.digivolve and digivolve for more evolve options to CHOOSE from 3. All digimon having two signature moves as well as learning other moves 4. Recruiting new Digimon like in a Pokemon game. 5. Keep the visual style and music of the human stages the same but replace the character models with sprites

It wouldn't take a lot to fix it, tbh. There's a solid foundation, just needs a bit of fine-tuning.

Looks like your expectations are the only thing that powered this negative review. When I first played Digimon World 1, I wanted a game like Digimon World 2. Digimon World 2 was really fun for me and it really had a nice cyberpunk theme. The beginning of the game was slow, but things like DNA Digivolving and managing a tank got me interested. It was a tie to themes about being a parent, just like in World 1 where you take care of a growing Digimon. The game definitely feels like Digimon to a kid who watched a lot of the show and loved it but didn't really ever care about the baby forms and who wanted the rookie forms first. It seems like you based your view entirely on Digimon World 1 and wanted it to be very similar when that game was such a chore and didn't actually feel like Digimon too much. Not playing with a team was a huge problem and it was impossible with the setup they chose in the original game. It was interesting, but nonsense in the context of the series, to play as the only human in a world of Digimon. It also got rid of so much character by forcing us to only interact with Digimon when our own Digimon was acting less unintelligible as a dog.
@Caspicum8 жыл бұрын
I thought the sequel to the first game would be like the first game but better. I think that's a fair assumption to make. As for my opinion of the game, I'd feel the same if it had any other name. I find it tedious, slow and grindy. It's intrusive, and tries to cock-block progression at every turn to pad game time. I don't disagree that Digimon World 1 isn't reflective of the show in a great capacity, but I don't think many games have captured that correctly. Digimon World 1 was likely derived from the Tamagotchi line moreso than the show, which is why it's less like Adventure, and more like what it is. Not playing with a team was far from impossible though. It has major flaws, in that sometimes it barely works, but it's far from impossible. I think that's why I love RE:Digitize. It captured most of the good shit, and made it better.

You'd have a _heart attack_ from that much caffeine, lol. This game's combat was slow; that's my main problem with it, but I do plan to eventually beat it. Using an emulator is convenient for the battle animations, you can use the emulator's turbo option to speed through them. I never really got into the first Digimon World game. My favorite was probably the third, but I never beat that, either.

Found your video through some recommendations and I have to say that I personally half agree and disagree with your review. Let's start with agreeing; Definitely an obtuse leveling 'cap' system and somewhat tedious but yeah, keeping track of it is much easier. Battle animations I say about maybe 50/50. Probably more suited to casual gamers. Room variations, sure it's repeated but in game it's not like you'll go to many other places since there are so few. Only colourful exception was the adoption centre. Item management. Ooh boy, this really hurts since it's also a pain early on when you have to carefully manage your 'gift' items, recovery and etc all in one. Those vehicle upgrades at least help in that regard, making lower tier items/traps obsolete. Now let's see disagree; Dungeon design. It may be blandish and linear but once you get into the rhythm of it you'll know what you want to look for. 'Capturing' the digimon. They literally have an explanation in game, not a full fledged tutorial mind you but they at least tell you as in game dialogue early on. In that regard, the tank reason also fits, explained in game. Music is awesome for the boss battles though I also agree that some of the attack 'calls' are... over the top? Your explanation probably fits better here. This game along with Card Battle are actually my first Digimon games so I would say those hold a special place in my childhood memories but hey, this is just personal criticism and not meant to be rubbed the wrong way. You do produce interesting content though.
