I haven't been to Japan in several years, and now I have a reason to go next fall. October is usually a good time to visit -- temperatures are comfortable, and the typhoons are usually over by then. I might have to also visit my in-laws during any such visit, unless I can persuade my husband to allow me a stealth visit without in-laws. I'm glad to see the inclusion of vintage pens (and I'm envious of your Pilot Custom Urushi) too.

Thank you for your informative video as usual. Every time I watch your video, Tokyo seems to be an amazingly nice place to live.... Eh, to be fair, thus, I think I must be obligated to add my thoughts as a Japanese person who was born in Tokyo... :D. There are some disappointing things in Tokyo. A lot of people are planning on coming out this fall for it. You really should not be intimidated by coming out to Japan--a lot of people speak English and it is very travel friendly (when not in Covid). There will always be a person on staff that speaks English and this year we will have one of the show producers here (he wasn't the last two years because of Covid) and he is American. Let me know if you do come out as we try to do a get together with all the English speakers!

@@josephtedesco8429 Probably the best bet is to follow their twitter or IG account--it will announce how they will sell the tickets and when. The show is in October (it has already been decided) Provided there aren't any Covid problems, you should be able to get a ticket no matter what (they had to limit them the last 2 years for distancing).

You have it right. You could stop the video at reason No 1: Tokyo. I think robo security guard was onto you because you were filming it. Great vid as always, thank you and take care.

Thank you so much Cynthia! I think that robot was being courteous and letting me film it hahaha! Tokyo really is a great place to visit!

If I was in Japan and I went to this event, I might not have money to buy ticket home🤣

have you ever seen any bent nibs in japan? i've been told they're used in china to give a more brush-like look/feel to writing from a fountain pen, although i don't know if that's even true. so far i've seen no evidence of them being used in japan so i'm curious if you've seen them or if you've ever asked any japanese people what they think of them.

there are a lot ways to achieve brush like strokes, either through stack nib+ grinds like how Sailor does with naginata grinds or literal bent nibs AKA fude nibs. Especially the former can be really expensive which make them less accessible to most people. Plus most of them have a tendency to be pretty wide in terms of line width so less suitable for everyday writing. Both are indeed used by enthusiasts especially for calligraphy but I don't think you will see them in the wild a lot, much like you don't see vintage flex nibs in the wild that much (tho definitely in pen meets). Don't know about how Japanese think of them but I know Sailor's naginata has a huge cult following in China (strokes are fundamentally similar for both languages).

Yes, fude nibs are a thing here. I bought a Platinum 3776 from Bungukan Kobayashi at last year's TIPS and Nagahara-san bent the nib for me. It is in last year's Tokyo Pen show vid.

@@mikeshi2948 Thanks for a great reply! I have seen some fudes in the wild but like you said, it's not a common nib (probably EF or F here in Japan is the most common.) I got a Nagahara fude at last year's TIPS--still loving it!

I found the ink swamp ladies very cute. I come from Canada so the Ferris Wheel Press inks don’t feel very exotic to me.

I know! I found it so funny that most of my audience really want all the other things and not the FWP inks because they can get them pretty easily hahaha!

I think a website. I have their business card. I'll be posting the vender links in the pinned comment above in about a day or two. I'm trying to get caught up on comments now!
