Also for anyone interested apparently the reason behind sudden displays of aggression during petting (especially the belly or back) can be due to the fact that touching can easily overstimulate cats, so shorter petting sessions or gentler ones that avoid those areas (learning how much is enough for your cat is good too) can help keep your cat from being overstimulated.
