I know this is from 10 years ago, but I just had to say - thank you so much! I've just started my CELTA and have been spiralling into a panic about my lack of grammar knowledge - I didn't realise how much there was. This is the first thing I have found that has explained it in a way I properly understand. Thank you!!

Great video. My CELTA course begins next week and I was beginning to panic because of my weak command over english grammar. I have to remind myself that I know the language. I just need to learn to put names to different aspects. Thank you.

Sebastian. In my ear, if I'm not mistaken, the lady's pronunciation sounds like standard souther variery of British English. And this is natural for her as a native speaker, so there's no point in making remarks about her acent which if lovely by the way, she will not change it for the purpose of the video. The Queen's English on the other hand is a complitely different story and is often reffered to as RP (received pronunciartion). Have a nice day.

I think she has a mild "Black country' (Dudley, Wolverhampton and surrounding area) accent or perhaps a Brummie (Birmingham) accent. I'm from the South, but I think it sounds clear and pretty good.

Can anyone tell me why 'wanted' is a past participle in the very last quiz? It's not part of a perfect or passive construction
@elttraining4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lambiguo - thanks for your question. If you look at this again, you can see that 'wanted' IS part of a perfect construction here because we have 'have' plus the past participle after a modal verb. It's known as the 'perfect infinitive' although I've never used that term with learners. Hope that helps. Best, Jo
@IambiguousSegment4 жыл бұрын
@@elttraining Hi Jo, thank you for your reply. I didn't know about the perfect infinitive before.. I will look for some practice exercises!

Would you say it's used more in writing than speaking?

When used with modals they also have the same grammatical construction as past modals

Hi. Wow-what a video. Teacher, have you ever considered opening an English school? For example to teach teachers at different levels? Because you explain so well and very clearly. You speak with pause which I like and the lesson it was so grateful. Thank you. I appreciate. I always wanted to be a Teacher. I have been studying at the University doing a foundation course in Business Management but I like teaching. I am thinking of doing TESOL or CELTA. I am not sure which one I would do but I love the way you explain grammar and other things. Thank you teacher again. One Question where are you living? Thank you again.

Hello, I found your video while looking for info on CELTA. I have to say your video is the best I've come across on KZbin. Your explanation on adverbs is so very helpful. As is the section on transitive and intransitive verbs. I've always told my students about some verbs (like, enjoy, especially) needing an object, but I didn't they were called transitive verbs! Thank you for the enlightenment.

@elttraining9 жыл бұрын
+Pholile Shongwe Hi there. I developed this grammar course mainly for pre-CELTA. As you'll know if you've applied for a CELTA course, you are expected to have a sound knowledge of grammatical terminology before you start and lots of people struggle with this. The course is to help you to get to grips with parts of speech and verb tenses and also with what's difficult for learners (and teachers) in teaching grammar. I also have a section called 'CELTA Toolkit' on my site elt-training.com (and the videos are here on KZbin, too) which have similar material to the input sessions on CELTA and might be a useful supplement- these are free :)

I don't understand why "on the bench" is an Adverb if the word "bench" is a noun...
@elttraining3 жыл бұрын
Hi there- its not uncommon that certain things together make something new. Think about compound nouns or compound adjectives, even verb tenses 😀. Here you have a preposition, an article and a noun but together it’s an adverbial phrase because it modifies the verb (by saying where it happened). Hope that helps. Jo
@elenasony3 жыл бұрын
@@elttraining Really kind of you to reply, Jo. My confusion probably comes from the Romanian grammar: we have Subjects, Predicates, Attributes and Objects. Objects can be direct, indirect, of place, of time, of mode. The function of objects can be fulfilled by nouns or pronouns or adverbs. So a noun doesn't cease to be a noun just because it has the role of Object of place. I am not sure I am using the correct translation, we call them Complement circumstantial de loc (de loc=of place). I saw somewhere they call them Adverbials.
Lol I have an interview today for Celta course. I'm not a native English speaker, but I'm looking forward to do my best :) I am a bit stressed. If only I knew the types of questions I should expect...
@Savantjazzcollective2 жыл бұрын
verb + adverb can never equal 'fast'. She spins quickly is the only "correct" response.

I don't understand your accent, sorry.
@Cinzazul10 жыл бұрын
Really? And are you teaching English?
@SebastienGonzalezChile10 жыл бұрын
Perhaps in the future. I think that the majority of students want to use English in an international setting as a 'Lingua Franca' so speaking the 'English of the Queen' is not necessary.
