Knock-offs are made to be the budget version of brands. Really, most knock-off brands are EXACTLY the same as name brands. Why spend money on advertising and product placement on a new cereal that will easily get stomped out by the competition when you could coast on the success of said competition and appeal to a whole new market? You have to think business on things like this.

Dunno about you, but, knockoff can be consider as a marketing strategy. Imo, to make bigger brand to fall as many loyal consumer get confused with many similar name. To proof it, here in indonesia, indomie and mie sedap are 2 grand noodle that compete each other, one day, i saw a noodle named mie sedaap, made by indomie to trick the consumer with the original mie sedap But not only to ruin the enemy's sale, knockoff also useful to easily sell your product in a quick way or you could say that smaller company tend to 'entrail' bigger company. This was done by stepping the same footsteps by the bigger company, which often leads towards similar looking products, BUT easier to catch up with the market pace. The easy example of this is iron pants, essentially a flappy game knockofgs that also gone viral, following flappy bird's trail (although it isn't as viral as flappy bird).

In many cases, to me personally, I find that most off-brand cereal to be better than name brand. So much so, that say, fruity pebbles, the name brand just tastes wrong. While the off-brand is amazing. I found this to be the same with potato chips, the off-brand version seems to have a lot more flavor.

We are raised to buy brands, bombarded with adverts, labels and dubious word of mouth from others who have grown up with brands too. As one of them said they wouldn't buy the off-brand because it has sad dreary packaging, many never try anything but one brand, you stick with the stuff you loved as a child; McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Kellogs, etc. never doubting their superiority over all other brands, never daring to buy anything, "cheap". I know I drink my Coke and my ketchup has to be Heinz, can't stand any other ketchup:P The advertisers implant the ideas, generate interest, make sure the name and logo are are firmly remembered and make sure we associate them with good times. Often people can't tell the difference or seem to prefer the off-brand product when they are deprived of the visual cues like the logo but seem to genuinely enjoy their brand more when they have all their senses intact. It's all in the mind!

Growing up, Cinnamon Toast Crunch was my favorite cereal, but it tasted weirdly artificial to me the last two times I tried it, but Cinnamon Toasters (the off-brand version) taste just like I remember them tasting when I was growing up. I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but I ate it when I was a kid, took a break because they changed the ingredients to include dairy (I'm allergic to dairy), then started eating it again when they took the dairy ingredients back out. I've only been eating it within the past five years, so I can't tell if it tastes different from when I was a kid. There's another version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch made by Kashi, but it has a weird aftertaste that I don't like. I've seen a recipe online to make your own Cinnamon Toast Crunch at home. No joke. MANOWARKILL89' You know, it IS possible that I'm used to the sugar substitute and not real sugar in a healthier cereal (Kashi has healthier versions of a lot of cereals, so I'd imagine that it's General Mills using the substitute in cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch). I think they changed the sugar content in Bazooka Bubble Gum as well, in addition to several other bubble gums that tasted different to me.

I eat a lot of cereal and recently switched to the knockoff brands to save money. I think most of them are amazingly similar, the only one that I've noticed tastes bad compared to the original is the Cinnamon Toast Crunch knockoff. I worked at Kroger, or if you're on the west coast, Ralphs, when I was 16, I found out that the generic brand the Kroger stocks is the exact same serial, from the same name brand maker. The only difference is that in the factory they use Kroger labeled boxes. That's a common practice among large retailers like Kroger, Walmart, Publix etc.

the thing is knock offs are the same thing, they're just left over from the original brands they buy it from them and just put they're names and make it cheaper.. they're just selling you a name ( or that's what i learned in marketing class)

That's normally true, but I don't think for cereal. I know the whole "organic" and "regular" fruits and vegetables are from the same farms, it's just grocery stores making a bit more money, I believe Pepsi does the same with off-brand cola, but I've never heard of it for cereals.

that's not true with most cereals. Cocoa Dyno Bites are bigger (in my opinion taste better) and are cheaper. if what you said is true, they would LOSE money. Mainly because, lets say Brand cereal costs $5.00, Off-Brand cereal costs $3.00. the off brand would lose money. Hope that helps ;)

One of the off-brands for lucky charms are Marshmallow Mateys and they are SO FREAKING GOOOOOD. And you can get them in a HUUUGGE bag to last such a long time. They taste way different tho. The actual cereal is more airy and puffy than Lucky Charms so its almost like two different cereals. :T

Cherrios are my favorite cereal and the only cereal I can eat the generic of. I have tried a number of generic versions and they are so different.

the dollar store in my town (Dollar Tree) sells the most awesome fake Froot Loops. They also have fake Capt Crunch with crunch berries that is very tasty.

Justin Villa it depends what kind you buy. The 8 ounce kind is imitation cheese (usually) and you can tell by reading what it is called on the package. They do have real cheese that tastes really good, but it is in smaller packages, like 3 or 4 ounces. There is a ton of awesome food at dollar stores, I have tried a lot of stuff that they sell.

As someone who worked at a grocery store and would see the the larger boxes things come in I can tell you that a lot the "off brand" cereals are owned by the same companies as the name brand to sell under another name. That doesn't just go for cereal either, I noticed it with other foods too more commonly what would be considered snack foods.

It's not super common here in the US, but you can buy it in bags. Usually the bags are the knock-offs or sometimes the real cereals in huge quantities. :) I always stick with the boxes.
