Kill Switch Review. Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review Kill Switch for the PS2. Developed by Namco and published by Namco. A third person shooter that is the first to make cover based shooting the main focus of the game. Although original with its combat system, the game is did not see the success that most other games with the combat system saw. Although very repetitive, this is a solid action title for the PS2. Awesome game! One of my all time favs. Winback was the first game with the modern cover system we know today and was actually the first game focused on cover shooting, but it didn't have blind fire. The oldest game I know with a cover system was a weird 3DO game starring some famous rockstar dual weilding sawed-offs. Wimback(N64, PS2) and Kill.Switch(PS2, XBOX, PC, GBA) are both classics and should both be played by anyone into shooters.

What about Winback: Covert Operations for the N64? Koei was really the first. However, this game served as a keystone to bridge this formulaic approach to third person shooting from the progenitor (Winback) to the next generation with Gears of War. This is still a solid game.

Preferred Black and the SOCOM games on the PS2, but Kill Switch was fun. But a terrific cover shooter for the PS3 is Vanquish. They amped up the fun with that one and gave you rocket boots to race between cover.

@@Marcley18 I thought the E3 2001 build of this game was not a realistic cover-based shooter but a campy arcade-style, spiritual successor to classic Galaxian/Galaga trilogy, with giant aliens attacking the city and EDF called-in to stop them, but September 11 attacks cause Namco to re-tool Kill Switch into this one we got LOL.

My favourite TPS of all time. I found this game about 8 years ago in the bargin bin at an HMV for 4 dollars and damn was it worth it. The Xbox version plays great and looks pretty good. Hell, I would've paid 60 dollars if I knew how good it was.

Eh I think Winback was more like a MGS clone. This was more of a new technique at the time. I remember I thought the cut scene was some of the best GFX I had seen at the time.

this was one of 2 games that insperd epic in making of gears of war, also as mgs 1 was a big hit manny emulated the vissuals of that game, its nothing new in the industry as one emulates or gets inspeird of other things and the similaritys can be seen.

@redsoxfan1984 Actually mgs2 was the first offensive cover based shooter, so yes it didn't really have a proper cover system, you could only crouch or stand behind objects.

+Joshua Felty I tried my best to like The Omega Strain. but it's sooo horrible. The PS1 games had the annoying re-spawning enemies, but it was less often used. It wasn't anywhere as bad as Omega Strain and it's just annoying as hell.

+OwtDaftUK I love the 1st two Syphon Filter games the best. I thought the story line made up for some annoying events. To tell you the truth, this game was the first, second persons shooter I had ever played besides Silent Hill 1. Silent Hill and Resident Evil were the 1st I guess, I just don't put them in the same category as games like Sypohon Filter. One is action and the other is survivor horror. However my point was, I used to hate 2nd person shooter games only 1st. And that game kind of made it cool. This was back in 1999-2000 by the way. lol

I had this game, found it incredibally boring, and the grenade animation was horrible. Even old scholl NES Commando had a grenade that rotated when you threw it, this game it was just a icon that moved, so bad...

WOW!!! This video is old but is needed, good stuff...Winback or (Operation: Winback) came first in 1999 on the N64 then it went to the PS2 in 2001. That game was like godfather of cover based shooters. Kill Switch was next in 2003, it was Winback's successor and it was good because these two games helped kick start the "cover based shooters" game genre. If you want play good cover based shooters, you can start at the beginning with Winback or Kill Switch. Or you could play the later games in the genre like the Gears of War series, Binary Domain or Vanquish etc. But there is a down side, there are some gamers that say cover mechanics spoil games. Which started the cover based vs movement based shooters debate...A topic for another day.

I remember having the demo for PS2 and couldnt get use to the controls. It was pretty hard to get use to it since it was the first third person shooter. I stop playing it since I had no tutorial or any way of beating it. I think the demo came with Soul Calibur 3 for PS2

Berserkr01 Time Crisis is a rail shooter, MGS focuses more on the stealth but yes Winback was the real start.

Although Winback is similar, this was the first 3rd person shooter to feature the cover system as its core game mechanic, as well as using blindfire. Killswitch's lead designer was involved in the development of the Gears of War games.

it also seems far less telegraphed than something like uncharted or gears. when you see a semi-open area with barriers in those games you know a fight is coming up.
