My rule is once dinner is on the table my work day is done - both my paid work and my domestic work. My partner and the family clean up the kitchen and I don’t do anything else like more laundry or tidying. It works particularly well as we have solar panels so any loads of laundry or things like that I do during the day are free but at nighttime they aren’t. After dinner I head upstairs for a bath and to relax in bed whilst everyone else watches a tv show together. I value this peaceful time for myself and I hate tv so it is a win win for us all. I’m always the first one up in the morning so i straighten up the house, unpack the dishwasher and have a coffee in peace as everyone else sleeps. It makes such a huge difference to my energy levels and harmony in the home.

Yes, as a homeschooling mother, I learned that I had to set a time to be "done" for the day. At 5:00pm, the laptop is shut and I don't do anymore lesson prep or school stuff. I make dinner and clean the kitchen. I usually watch television in the evenings, but usually not past 9:00pm. I am in bed with a book by 10:00pm.

Ten years ago my husband was diagnosed with cancer, the journey is long and getting more difficult ...but here's the thing... about that time I discovered the ten item wardrobe and started following you Jennifer...can you believe it 10 years I've been following you...I used to sit with my husband and work out wardrobe plans...he had a good deal of input on that topic believe me...and would tease me endlessly about spending so much time cleaning my closet that it was the only place clean enough to drink my beloved tea time...he still has not lost that beautiful sense of humor...there is more to do now and more care to give so this is how i changed my routine...each time I'm needing water i don't drink it on the run i sit down and sip, this is a great time to read Victoria, such beautiful pages give me such a lift... something so seemingly small is so restorative, can't wait to read your ideas ladies 💖

I’ve just finished reading the Dorothy Wordsworth Grasmere and Alfoxden Journals, and I’m so happy to hear that you are resting more -it inspires all of us. I also appreciate your honesty of moments of some anxiousness/pressure here and there so that we do not feel completely alone and can see how you’ve overcome that. This is one of your very best videos.

I have absolutely started implementing rest into my schedule. It was desperately needed after two decades of Grindstone. (With 13 kids it’s expected right? Or so I thought.) But I’ve been making time for myself, weekly, monthly, and even yearly. In fact, I just got back from 10 days in Ixtapa, Mexico! It was amazing. I went by myself to a Woman’s Retreat! It was Pure Heaven. ☀️🏝️🌊

I think it's so important that ppl who are learning to rest recognize that it *does* take some time for some of us. Our brain is so loud & stimulated, it doesn't feel easy or natural always at first.

As a young mother, I had my 3 daughters by the time I was 26. I never stopped to rest. We did not have TV for quite sometime and definitely there were no computers to distract me. I almost felt guilty to sit down, knowing I could be doing something. It was never ending. Everything had to be done and straightened up long after the girls went to bed, just to have it to start all over again the next day. Everyday was like groundhog day. The girls got married in my 40's but it still did not slow me down too much. I love routine and even at 67 still do. I like order to my home. But, the difference now is I know how to relax. Just wish "sometimes" I liked to read. Love articles, but don't have the patience to read a book completely through. Though much quieter than my early days I love this time in my life. Nice video.

I'm in a different phase of life. I stay home with my baby and toddler. It sometimes feels like we're barely getting by. It's very hard to find any consistent time where house work and baby raising can end. But, I'm going to examine my life over the next few days and see where I can get a few uninterrupted hours.

Hi Jennifer - thank you for the inspiration... I don't even know how I could begin to rest by a certain time because dinner, cleaning up, driving kids to activities, putting my little kids down... I have 7 children ages 1-16. I will think and pray about it! ❤ Now that I'm my 40s I want to make time for rest too! This year I have made it a goal of mine to to implement a 3 o'clock tea time most days. I work outside the home at high volume veterinary hospital with many emergencies. Usually my work day starts at 8sm and ends at 6pm. But the tea time has been such a game changer, even if I have to come back and re heat my tea 3 times. Totally worth the serine sips of a small indulgent pleasure it brings.

Oh this is so hard. Many of us work outside the home so our days are divided with shift 1 (outside-home work) and shift 2 (inside-home work) which leaves very little me/rest time. Everyday you clean, declutter, put away, dinner, laundry, kids stuff, etc. Once 9pm hits, there is still more to do to just stay afloat.

Hi Jennifer. I can really relate to your situation. When we are professionals and mothers, there is a never ending to-do list. Since my children have grown up and flown the nest, I rediscovered my freedom and started to make time for the things I love to do, putting my health and happiness as the top priority. I have never looked or felt better. I am able to manage my stress and anxiety. Even perimenopause is not controlling me like it did. Like your kids, I think my kids like seeing me more relaxed and more fun to be with!!!!😊

My routines have changed over many years. The only one I really remember while single was doing my laundry on Monday’s. With kids, routines were a must of various sorts, you know, and picked up the routine of dishes an absolute priority after dinner, counter and stove wiped, floor swept, kitchen trash out nightly and laundry on Mondays. Then routines included driving kids to activities while juggling whatever else needed to get done and I still had my basic ones to ground me. During kids to college the same with extra time to start my own business at home with Mom and we had a routine of working M-F together. The old routines made this easy. Covid came and routine meant everyone back home, to my delight. They knew the routines & jumped into them along with household for a few months so I could help Mom while she was sick. Mom only made it 5 months. My routines faltered for awhile after but I had a few new ones when our dog got sick with a degenerative illness. I’m pretty sure the old routines got me through some dark times and after the dog was gone the next year, I realized that I was sick. The past two years I have the routines in my mind, like it’s Monday, I need to do the laundry, or dinner is done, I need to do the dishes, but my body doesn’t work. So my routines now are no routine but to do what I can when I can and to not overdo when I feel slightly better otherwise I will pay for it and be down for three days after. So though your video was actually a little depressing for me I swept the kitchen floor and listened to your idea of being creative and making new routines. My routines of the basics are now when I’m able, but your tea time sounds lovely and I’m going to try to do this every afternoon, and re-think if I can come up with some others that will be more helpful to me. Thanks for reminding me that maybe I just need to get creative and Make some new routines that suit me in my current life. Btw I recently read that the pilgrims did their laundry on Mondays, and wonder if my routine has followed my family for 20 generations to me? ! 😊

As a homemaker , I found that I could constantly keep going for hours on end this inevitably led to harsh, harsh burnout. I now end heavy chores at 2pm and doing lighter chores later so that I could be more present for family. Also I found having non home related days (chores outside of the home, shopping, groceries etc) beneficial as it now isn't all about homemaking but also time for me.

Oh, I'm sitting here to distract myself from a strong inner restlessness - which can also turn into a panic attack. And this occurs when I'm resting - and I feel like it's not my place, I should be doing something productive (I have a landscape architecture practice). So you speak from my heart. I also love my job, but I had to learn to set boundaries because of my health.

This video is sooo perfectly timed. I am currently on sick leave because I had a bad flu and symptoms are not backing off, even after antibiotics. Doctor told me that I simply need a rest. Medicaments are ok, I am taking everything I currently need, but I need to rest. And I feel so guilty to lay down and do nothing. I am a mum, so “doing nothing” is a stretchy term. I need to relearn to rest and be okay with it.

Your new routine has made you happier and more serene, and it shows. The "productive" aspect of rest could be understood as nurturing, regenerative, restorative, replenishing, and re-creative - what we all need to grow. This is very pertinent to me right now. I have spent the last decade dealing with undiagnosed autoimmune symptoms, thinking the whole time I was just lazy. Then I get diagnosed, take steps towards healing (fasting being one of them), and I am in remission now and feeling so amazing that I have become the world's most productive human being ever. I am amazed at how NOT lazy I am now lol. But I worry if I am swinging too far in the other direction.

I think this is my favorite video you have ever done!! I have often been working (not paid work just my own long list of projects such as photos going back to 1980) until 10 or 11 pm. I was trying to quit at 8 pm but had trouble doing that. You challenged me that I can certainly do that if you can stop at 4:30 with a real paying job! I have been afraid of being labeled "lazy" for some reason - I want to be seen as a productive person. I often whine that I can't read or watch all the classic films I have recorded because no time - but if I quit earlier, I could. I don't have a boss breathing down my neck as a taskmaster - I'm doing this to myself! I'm going to be pondering this a lot. I've watched the video 3X because I couldn't get over it!! 4:30!!! I even thought, "Is that okay with God to quit so early?" and He assured me it is! LOL.. I might end up with a radical transformation here!

Unfortunately, I had long covid. Thankfully, I fully healed. A big part of that was addressing long ingrained unhealthy push patterns in my life. During my recovery I practiced 20 min on and 20 min off. I would work either physically, cognitively or socially for 20 min(bc it's all work and requires mitochondrial energy) and then I would rest for 20 min. Maybe I would sit on the back porch and listen to the birds or I would do a yoga nidra or stretch slowly or take a slow and attentive walk, shower or sit and read. I have kept this pattern since then bc it has worked so very well. I just extended it out to now do 30-45 min on and then 15'ish min off bc now I have a return of normal energy. The other thing I do is I am in my bed by 8pm with my 3 favorite books and I'll invite the kiddos to join me if they want and I snuggle under the covers, put my red light on and read for as long as I desire, which is usually about an hour and then I go to bed early. I know you have mentioned before that people notice the crooked picture. I didn't comment on that video so i'll put it here. As an Army wife who has had to move a lot I have learned a lot of little tricks with picture frames. My favorite is to take a small snippet of a command strip and place it along the back edge of the frame that keeps sliding to one side or the other and then the command strip holds just that corner still and you can't see it. Thanks for a lovely video!

My biggest change that has allowed for rest time is delegating chores to family members. For some reason, it was hard for me to actually bring myself to do that, so the dramatic change has only happened recently, in the last several months. Since we have six children, MANY hands make light work, and I can hardly believe that I tried to do everything myself for all the years of having babies. I’m so grateful we’re in this beautiful stage with several older, helpful children! 🤍

Hi, Jennifer! I enjoyed the video and am encouraged to continue to pursue resting over rushing. In the last month, I have had a sense that my body is telling me to quiet my mind and activity. It has felt healing to heed that voice in this season of winter rest. I am curious if that voice will shift with the changing of the season. Love and peace to you. ~Emilie

I get it. In the last ten years, I was a single mom. I spent so much of myself and resources on my daughter that I lost the art of being a lady. Yeah!

I have a question for you. (I’ve watched your videos for a few years!) When you’re doing tea time, where are your kids? I totally respect your decision not to prominently include your kids in your videos, but I know they’re schooled at home, so just wondering what you have them doing when you do tea time. Thanks Jennifer!

I loved this video Jennifer; I watched it twice to really soak it in. With your working hours significantly less, how has the quantity and quality of your work been affected? I'm curious to know if the quality of your work has been enhanced by feeling more rested? I'm also curious to know if you have you had to 'sacrifice' quantity by giving yourself more time to complete some of your work tasks, or if you are still able to accomplish the same amount as before (for example, maybe instead of allocating a month to finish a writing project, you now give it two months and you are ok with that longer time frame)?

Hi Jennifer I love your ideas of scheduling rest into your day. I’m not a parent so I have more available time in my day. But as a successful writer how do you time block your day? When and how much time do you write? Or film? What’s a typical day’s schedule from awaking up to falling asleep? You must be writing somewhere in there.

Jennifer can you share when you have your most important time blocks for work, now that you take the evening off?

This is interesting to cut off work at 4:30. How many hours would you say you work per day on average?

So glad you are being intentional about taking care of yourself and getting rest. It's hard for me to give myself permission to do that, and this video along with the time-blocking one was really helpful. I'm wondering, you still seem to accomplish as much as ever despite winding down at 4:30. How do you still fit everything in? Renovations, work, kids, daily work, etc. Do you have a different routine during the day or do you just plan to do less?

This is such a good idea in theory but I have no idea how to do it 😢. I am a working mother with two little ones ages 2 and 4 and the 2 year old requires constant supervision and I feel like I can never get a moment to rest. Do you have any advice to mothers with very young children?

Hello Jennifer. Curious, since you stop work at 430 now, do you frontload your day with work, and put household chores and tasks after 430? Or do both work and major household tasks stop at 430?

A combination of frontloading the work but also delegation too. I have offloaded some tasks as well.

Hi Jennifer! Can I ask you how you're able to spend so much time doing things you choose to do when you're homeschooling your kids? Are they old enough now to be pretty independent, or do you get help with that? Thanks (I have a 4, 1 year old and one on the way and am trying to visualize how my time blocking - including rest - will look as I'm moving forward!)
